  • Coming up, we’re showcasing a song that boasts the most recognizable date ever used in a lyric. September 21st! For decades people have wondered why the band who wrote this 70s classic chose this particular day. Earth Wind and Fire and their classic hit September made that date famous but the truth may not be what you think it is. Earth Wind and Fire or EWF, is known for the pure positivity that they infuse into all of their music. Any time you drop the needle on one of their records it's a guaranteed good time. And September is the epitome of all of that...Written by the band’s leader Maurice White and a songwriter he called up out of the blue who was on food stamps at the time and struggling mightily. Maurice Alle Willis her shot at the title and together they authored the 1978 smash September.. one of the most joyful jams of the era. So get ready, we’ve got the story… NEXT on the Professor of Rock.

Hey music junkies, Professor of Rock, always here to celebrate the greatest artists and the greatest songs of all time. If you have ever thrown down on a game of Hungry Hippos or Chutes and Ladders or bombed on Battleship, this channel of pure nostalgia is for you. Make sure to subscribe below right now by clicking on the big red button and then clicking on the bell so that you know when the latest is coming down the pipeline. We also have a patreon you'll want to check out. There you’ll find an additional catalog of exclusive content and you can even become an honorary producer to help us curate this music history.
So, it’s time for another edition of #1 in Our Hearts. This show honors songs that were so unbelievably great, they absolutely should've been #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. But for whatever reason, be it radio play, lack of marketing, label support, or just sheer stupidity, the song came up short. On previous episodes, we have covered You Make My Dreams by Daryl Hall and John Oates and I Can Dream About You by Dan Hartman.
This one should’ve been #1 for 10 weeks. It’s one of the most joyful get-up-and-dance ditties ever recorded. Today we are taking a deep dive into Earth, Wind, and Fire’s 1978 hit September. Seriously How this wasn’t a #1 song right out of the gate is beyond me. It is just so good. I really can’t say enough about Earth Wind, and Fire. They are one of my favorite groups… they’re just so electric. So today I want to celebrate this incredible group, their incomparable leader Maurice White, and their signature song September… which is a guaranteed hair-standing-on-end, smile-enhancing extravaganza!
Maurice White was born in Memphis, Tennessee, and began his musical career as part of a jazz trio called the Mad Lads that he co-formed with his childhood buddy, the illustrious Booker T. Jones. Reflecting back on those early days, Booker remembered Maurice as a shy kid who spoke in a whisper. But that shyness would be short-lived, as Maurice would later break out of his shell to showcase an energetic personality that would captivate the world. After the White family moved from Memphis to Chicago, Maurice played drums for a few local bands, including the Pharaohs and the Jazz Band, before getting hired as a session drummer for Chess Records.

You will never attend a wedding, and not hear that song!!! I think the fact that the lyrics are very simple is directly connected to why the song is so infectious. The words don't even remotely get in the way, and the melody just takes over.

My father took me to hear Chicago and Earth Wind and Fire when their summer 2015 tour took them to Bethel Woods. The date was September 1, and it was the last concert he and I attended before Steve Gordon passed away 4 years and 2 months later. The date of the concert made their performance of "September" that much more enjoyable, coupled with how Philip Bailey sounded even better than he had 40 years earlier when he joined EWF. Philip is easily one of my singing influences.

I had a panic attack while eating in a restaurant years ago. I couldn’t breathe, my chest felt like it was going to cave-in. I was about to ask for emergency services when an EWF song start playing on the restaurant’s satellite radio. It was Fantasy, I think. I just laidback and let White and Bailey’s lyrics and vocals wash over me. My panic symptoms disappeared and I never felt so in touch with music… it’s positive healing power. Thanks soooo much EWF :)

I love Earth Wind, & Fire. I don't like the song September, despite being born in September. It's overplayed. I like After the Love Has Gone, Let's Groove, Fantasy, Sing a Song, Shining Star, Boogie Wonderland, and That's the Way of the World, but September drives me insane. Just like Kool and the Gang's Celebration. A band that has a bunch of really good songs that are overshadowed by that one song that is played to death at every party, and on every station that doesn't know they have other equally good songs.

I answer a lot of your videos with professional responses, but this one's more personal. I had a keyboard in my apartment in Las Vegas in the late 2000s, and my daughter was in second grade. She was noodling around with the actual notes but not coming up with anything, but it had a program where you could follow along and try to play the songs that were pre-programmed in it. There were about two hundred, and number two was Earth Wind & Fire's September. Once my daughter heard that song she never failed to play it when she was over at my house, usually six or seven times each time she sat down. I equate this song to her, and she equates it to me. She's now 21 and has already released one full album and another single.

I don't know why, it's just where I always heard it and my friends and I would just start singing.... at the top of our lungs , of course, especially the Bad e Ya...... September was one of the songs that they played, of course, and everyone in our section was on their feet, dancing and singing along, even if it was just the ba dee ya’s. My dad had bought the tickets and they were fantastic seats. He was so happy during the entire concert -I still remember seeing his smile as he danced with my mom.
Philip Bailey’s voice made my heart soar. Star was another joyful song of theirs that I loved. Incredible song on all fronts. A lifelong musician, I write, produce and record my own music and a few years ago I tried my best to recreate the groove to "September" on one of my tunes. I made sure the tempo was exactly the same as well as the drum track, etc. The song turned out okay but I also realized that the irresistible feel of "September" just can't be duplicated. It'll never be matched for the uplifting, impossible-to-not-dance-to JOY it conveys. EW&F were and still are untouchable. Thanks for highlighting this number's greatness.

Great sounds and people from various demographics were in the audience. EWF touches a lot of people. Earth Wind and Fire. Absolute great group. Provided great listening experience in the 70s. Blended many types of music together for a sound that was both different and Joyous.
The White brothers were also genius for inviting Phillip Bailey to join the group.
Between this song and Boogie Wonderland, they make you jump up and want to scream shout and dance! Love love love their catalog of music.

I can't believe this song wasn't number 1. You could cover almost anything by EWF. September, Fantasy, Getaway, Boogie Wonderland, Let's Groove tonight, After the love has gone, Serpentine Fire. All are filled with great songs and even better musicianship. I can't read, write, or play a note. But boy, can I hear it when they are top-notch musicians. I always loved EWF, even when I wasn't a big fan of disco. I went to them because that's where the girls were! Great video, Adam

RE "I can't read, write, or play a note. But boy, can I hear it when they are top-notch musicians." If you can hear the music, that's the thing. Many people can't. If you ever do want to play, reading and writing notes is the least of it. It will come in time almost as a byproduct of the process. Music theory isn't really theory, it's an academic analysis of music after the fact. The music came first.

I think that's a beautiful way to remember your dad! My parents have both been gone for over 20 years, but I love remembering good times with them.
Did anyone else get a lump in their throat and watery eyes when the Professor told his memory of his dad and this music? That was so sweet.
I recently discovered that my funny dad pulled the greatest "dad" joke on me, and it took me more than 50 years to realize it!
When I was a kid in the 1960s, I got my first cat. She was kind of homely, but she acted snooty and regal. She was an alley cat with the soul of a princess. My dad suggested calling her "Princess Pupule", after a song that was popular in Hawaii when he served in the Army there during WWII. I thought it was great, so that was her name.
Last year, I ran across that song on TH-cam, and was so happy that I'd finally get to hear it.
Oh Dad! I was laughing so hard!
"Princess Pupule" was a lady of ill-repute, and this song was too suggestive for mainland radio:
      "Princess Pupule has plenty papayas
She loves to give them away
And all of the neighbors they say
Oh me-ya oh my-ya you really should try-ya
A little piece of the Princess Pupule's papayas
      Zazza zazza zazza zazza zay
      Princess Pupule's not truly unruly
To pass out papayas each day
But all of the neighbors they say
She may give you the fruit but she hang on to the root
And so she has the fruit and the root to boot..."

The story of the bad day you were having only to be turned around into one of your greatest memories is inspiring. There are so many people that become victims of their own "bad days" and let that event control how they feel for the rest of that day and possibly several days. Sure there are tragedies and horrific events, but those are different than a simple "bad day". Those simple bad days are just a small insignificant moment in time and we should remember that we can start our day over at any time. There are no rules. Don't let a simple negative event, or person impact your entire day. Brush it off and start over.
    Peace ✌️🕊️
