Mr V has a more fitting face in his old design but his new design simply blows the old one out of the water. Not only with the design being a disproportionate hell spawn. But his mannerisms. His mannerisms sell his personality a lot more in the new one. His new movements just shows that this is a common occurance for him and hes so confident and cocky at the same time about breaking boyfriend.
I love both designs, but personally I think I have to give this one to the newer version. Sure he's a bit derivative of Lord X, but so long as he still has a visual identity of his own, that's not the worst thing to be. In a way, being less mario-like kinda makes him more unsettling, plus the lanky limbs allow him to be extra expressive. I think the real seller for the new design though is the use of white for his eyes and teeth. The red and black look is iconic of the Virtual Boy and is definitely well utilized, but I think it needed that accentuation to really tie it all up nicely. Honestly, I think if we had a combination of the two designs, we'd probably have the best Mr Virtual design of all.

I agree that the newer version is the better of the two, but I actually see this leaning more towards Fatal Error's counterpart rather than Lord X. The way he seems to manipulate the entire window as well as pull the changes to the background and multiply the view just tells me that he's another, well, virtual mastermind, especially with how easily he was able to crush Bf's confidence the second he morphs into Gf. The new appearance, the new Gf part, the animation with his morphing, it all connects so well together on top of the lingering floating window effects and the new split screen effects.
I think he means like they have kind of the same poses. As in that hyper-realistic version that you see in things like that one song where he sings about his pain. I forgot the name of it.
I am a bit late, but I had a cool idea. What if the first phase was Mr. Virtual in the old sprites, but as the song progresses, he sometimes glitches into the new one? Then, when he takes the the form of Girlfriend, he would sometimes transform into the beta sprites of him with the Girlfriend head? Then he transforms into his new sprites in the final phase to show him growing in power. Just a thought, I really like both of these sprites, and that's how I would inclide both of them.

My idea kind of had him start with a normal Mario form until the title drops and becomes an almost combination of his old and new look. Plus, after the fake GF bit, he gains a ring master attire with a top hat and suit (to represent the fact he was a circus performer before he became a killer), and after the crazy bit he reverts back to what he was before the final part of the song.

I think one thing that works in Mr. Virtual's favor in terms of his new sprites is how expressive he is, like his lore of formerly being part of a circus genuinely shines as he takes on all these dramatic and flashy poses while adding various uncanny elements to what he's doing. Don't get me wrong, I think his old design is really cool, but his poses don't really say much about him as a character beyond "Am spooky"
