Yes, especially if you are using a steam locomotive. Most excursion trains are running at slow speeds and on isolated tracks, so they have a lot of leeway compared to a normal railroad.
Your right! I asked the same question and the engineer said they only need coal a few times a day. They shovel it into the firebox when it is sitting at the station. They can go a round trip with no new coal. The engineer is also the fireman.
