To those saying this car is a POS, piss off!!! These are great cars. A stock V8 Tbird with the automatic can pull off 15 second quarter mile times which equals a mustang gt of the same year. Yes the heads didn't flow well and the plastic intake manifolds were known to crack at higher mileage but those engines will run FOREVER.
that chassis had a 5* safety rating WITH NO AIRBAGS (bags were added in 94). Only engine issue i had in 300K was valve stem seals because it smoked a bit. Took a few hours.
I own a '95 LX V8 myself (mine being near mint condition though), and this just goes to prove this really is the "every mans" luxury coupe. Reliable as clockwork, durable as hell, flexible as needed. I bought my own just last year, barely 90K miles on it, showroom shine and everything for only $4K after tax! In that year, I may have been rough on it, but it has never broken down on me yet, and it still looks like it rolled out of the factory yesterday. Beautiful and flexible, dependably durable.
my 1996 Ford Thunderbird is a 4.6 V8 and has 296,868 miles on it and it still runs only problems it has on it right now is the fact it burns oil like it burns gas! but other than that I have never lost a race against a truck or mustang.
My1997 Ford thunderbird is a 6.2 v8 and has 113,452 miles and it's in better condition i had this car since it came out for sale in december 22, 1997 it use to be pearl white but knaw its blue candy i wouldnt change my car for nothing in the world because it's the only car that has a 6.2 v8 fuel injection automatic transmition
I truly like that Kyle ventures into reviewing such an enormously wide range of vehicles, both in shape, price range etc. For one thing, (on emotional ground) these older vehicles have so much character. It's like they have a story to tell us, only if we just listen to them. Secondly, (for practical reason): In a country where 46 million people living on food stamps, that's probably the only sort of vehicle many can afford.
I own a 97 3.8 Thunderbird and have kept it as clean as I can the interior is great and has not given me problems after 2 years of owning it. I plan on putting a supercharged 4.6 when the motor gives out in the future and arrive in something different to the meets (:
This was my first ever car (mine was tan). Great car. Had some pretty big issues at first (transmission and suspension problems) but after those were fixed it ran solid. I sold it to my aunt a few years ago and I think it has something like 300K miles on it now. Always thought about buying another as a project car.
Just bought the same exact model, only difference is that mine has a sunroof. All the electronics in it work perfectly, the interior, even though the color, hunter green, is a bit on the "annoying" side is in great condition. Very roomy, placement of the components are very nice. Has a few squeaks and here and there and is probably due for a good tune-up but all in all a very smooth running car. Got mine for a steal at 800$ and would have gladly payed 4x that amount.
Still have mine , rusty, green paint disease but I installed a new front end, shocks, etc and the handling and ergonomics are better than a 50K new car. Suspension is a bit soft and it don't jar you like a tight sports car, but the design allows for awesome handling. Cost me about 200 in parts. The suspension is very similar to a BMW. Extremely reliable and fast too, at 250K miles. I have options like abs and trac assist. If it wasn't rusty I would repaint it, probably drive it till the wheels fall off. Last summer I was driving it like 500 miles a week...ran like a top, going up steep hills. Decent gas mileage too for that driving(around 19-20MPG) I installed 03 mustang calipers for stopping on hills. It is a slight mod but they can put you thru the windshield.
Holy shit I just bought the same color same year thunderbird with the same faded green paint but the odometer stopped at 140,000 miles! I was looking for a mustang but I found a 95 t-bird for only $1500 since it was overheating. I changed the water pump and fan and the 4.6 runs just fine!
That car is worth $2,500-$3,500 today. I just bought a clean, low mile one for $7,000 and that was a good deal. Nice ones are getting to be $10,000. The Fox body Mustangs are pulling the prices up.
I just picked up a 96 V8 a few days ago for 8 grand. 50K miles, only one owner and insanely clean under the hood and exterior for it's age. Benefit of a car spending 3 decades in California as opposed to Colorado where I live now. Definitely intend on throwing some cash into this one, make her look extra pretty.
I like watching theses videos. I especially enjoy watching the older vehicles. It really helps me appreciate how far we have gone with cars today, but also how little has changed. And look at the way, the speedometer is on the left and tachometer on the right. This was before a time when interior ergonomics was conceived. Keep up !
1996 thunderbird. It's an awesome car! If you get one I'd say swap the manual for a 5spd and call it a day. Mine was decently "quick" getting to 60 in 8 seconds. Not much today but 10yrs ago it was ballsy. Swap it out for a 5spd and you'll be in the 6's with no mods to the engine. Swap out the 4.6 for a newer 4.6 and you'll find yourself in the 5's to 60. Swap in a GM LS or equivalent engine and I'm sure she'll dip into the 4's with wheels and tires. Also these cars came factory with an IRS.
