- Encores! kicks off its 19th season with Stephen Sondheim and George Furth's Merrily We Roll Along, which examines the lives of three artists whose friendship is tested by time, events, ambition and fate. Directed by Sondheim's "old friend" James Lapine, the production at New York City Center stars Colin Donnell as Franklin Shepard, Lin-Manuel Miranda as Charley Kringas and Celia Keenan-Bolger as Mary Flynn, plus Elizabeth Stanley as Gussie Carnegie, Betsy Wolfe as Beth Shepard and Adam Grupper as Joe Josephson. Broadway.com jumped at the chance to chat with this talented company, who dished about taking on this cult musical, working with each other and, of course, collaborating with Sondheim. Click below for an inside look at the show as we travel through the years with the cast of Merrily, then head to New York City Center to see the show, running through February 19 only!
Lin pretending that he doesn’t know EXACTLY how many performances the original production had is relatable.
Right!
I love how they almost sang the wrong words in Opening Doors. When I was in the show we messed up the words a lot and we had 3 months of rehearsals not 12 days!
same! that song is no joke to learn!!
Anyone here after seeing the actual revival 2024?
Amazing to see lin in this role, make so much sense!
And could Colin Donnell be any more handsome? I could just stare into those eyes.
I love Colin's messy hair and messy look

*breathes heavily*
lin. it's lin. he-
*he has no beard, i-*
Oedipus Complex? Oh Prunella -- Sondheim's beyond all that. I've seen three different productions of this show, including the revised version that premiered in La Jolla. It's brilliant and deeply moving. Someone ought to urn it into a movie. Easily done as one of tis inspirations is "It's Always Fair Weather."
David Ehrenstein it’s being turned into a movie but the movie won’t finish till 2039
Lin, Betsy, and Celia!
I wish I could have seen this
@gicristofaro1
I saw it last night, it was fantastic. Hope you were able to get tickets too ;)
Im college I read the original play script by Kaufman and Hart. I would ldvoe to see it one day.
❤❤
Omg what did Lin didn´t do?
It's so sad this fantastic musical with the music of a genius didn't last long on Broadway. Well, I guess it's only for people who understand music. Most people want to see "Spider-Men" (because what you see on Broadway is lots of them floating above!) flying about their heads, when they can fly!, and people even care to understand the story -- in the case of "Spider-Men" on Broadway there's no story at all, sadly. But I was able to see "Merrily We Roll Along", and I loved it ;)
You mean they couldn't re record that trumpet mistake at the beginning?
If Ham and Phillip got to grow older with Eliza and start a family business.
Why are their eyes all so red?
I just saw the very first preview of Merrily We Roll Along in Cincinnati directed by two-time Tony winner John Doyle (2006 Company revival). It was MUCH better than this. Oh, and I almost forgot F*CKING STEPHEN SONDHEIM WAS THERE. I hope it gets moved to Broadway like Company did.
I don't really like Lin Manuel Miranda in this role...
Could not agree more!! I thought I was the only one to think this!!!! Thanks!!!!
I LOVE Lin but his voice doesn't fit maybe it's because i'm in love with Raul Esparza role more
I STILL Love Lin tho he's amazing and so talented
I love Lin but his voice doesn’t work with this role
