Refreshing to find a TH-cam guitarist who knows their stuff and seems like a really nice person. Such a rare combination these days! You've done me a massive favour - I'm learning this song for a wedding band that we're putting together and you just taught me it in 12 minutes flat! Many thanks.
Jesus Christ it took me two hours to learn that second part. But that's one of the best parts about learning a new song. Once it clicks, a huge grin pops on your face.
ugh, please help me out with that part. I've tried for hours and I just can't figure out the picking pattern. I need to see it written down so I know when to pick what strings :(
jaede rockwood the best advice I can give you is to figure out the bass part of the Travis picking first, and get that down pat. From there, slowly start to integrate the chords. It will take awhile to figure it out, but don't give up. Listen to that beginning of the song on repeat, and eventually it will click. Good luck!
I focus on getting the actual chording down and than just do the picking how I feel comfortable playing it ( never do I try to play it exactly how he does ) This ( 2 things )1 allows me to learn it quick , 2 Gives it a little originality .
Hi there! Thanks for the kind words. Yes, this version is a bit different than the Rumours version because it was performed live in this fashion 20 years after that record was released. You know... aging voices = dropping it down a bit! ;)
I started tonight thinking the main riff was basically impossible for me and about an hour in it clicked and I played it. Thanks man! (Now for the second bit with different timing for thumb and fingers, mmm-looks impossible.)
great video! loved how you not only broke things down into sections, but you also didn't cut corners - sounds exactly how it does on the recording. Keep up the great work!
Thanks for posting this pony boy! Sometimes I figure stuff out by ear, or come up with other arrangements of songs in alternate tunings. But for a song like this, I’d like to honor Buckingham’s great playing style. It’s so much a part of what makes the song so special! Your video saves me some time and is inspiring. Thanks for sharing!!! 😇
Hey, thanks for this. The beginning of this song reminds me of sitting on a rocking chair on the front porch in Mississippi or somewhere picking a guitar. Weird, but that's what I get.
ok, im getting back to playing guitar after taking a very long break so this is way out of my level. after i practice, and i mean practice a lot, ill come back here and watch your great tutorial again. great job, guy.
First off, wonderful work! I learned a version where both the E strings were tuned down to D. That's the version I (mostly) committed to memory. Oddly, I still know all the intricate intro picking...but I've forgotten the chorus. Your video is a great refresher...and I have to say you sound spot on. Look into the double drop D tuning (i don't know what it's called...lindsey d?) When I pick it you can pluck 3 D's at once and it really adds depth.....now i just need to practice the chorus. Great video, and thanks!
i was reading so many tabs on UltimateGuitar and they were all wrong and didn't sound right, so glad u made this vid and in my perfered version 'The Dance' :D thanks alot mate
This is makes me want to grab a guitar and learn to play. I've obviously yet to try it, but I had to comment. Thank you for posting such a detailed breakdown so patiently. I'll get my hands on a guitar as soon as I can. :)
Looks like you're going to teach me another Fleetwood song ponyboy. Thanks for posting these. Mind throwing that tab my way as well? Think I got the intro sounding right, but you never know. Sound great btw
Lindsay used a capo on the original (to put it in E) but you've got it...same idea on the chords. thanks...I have to play it tomorrow. He's not the easiest guy to pull off at gigs.
I agree my friend, it can be a right pain in the arse! I remember first learning the song in 1998-ish and it just took a bit of practice. Keep doing it and your fingers will eventually get it out of habit. Another good song to practice is "Landslide" from The Dance album which also has a similar finger picking roll happening.
@cjkeegan100 That is drop D, he's tuning his B note down two steps to make an A, then when he releases it its a D note open...MAGIC! thanks for the vid man!
Good going dude. Thanks. Very accurate and clearly explained. Not such a tough pattern to get if you have some experience w/ the John Hurt/Jorma alt bass thing. Hardest part for me was hearing it clearly from the album w/ all the other voices/instruments going on. Good job in extracting the right notes. Have you learned/taught "Never GOing Back Again?" Another Buck ragtimey classic. I have seen it played in different tunings/capo position. Wonder which one LB recorded it with.
Yo matey, nicely done, though you didnt do the initial intro bit quite right:) Its played differently on different albums and live gigs. You might try doing it in double drop D:) Some parts are easier, some are a bit more difficult, though its a pretty simple riff to learn. The sounds you can get in DDD are very nice too. I prefer to use that tuning. Ive had 40 plus years of mucking around with it which helps,lol..Shane in Tassie, just across the pond:)
Heyo! Just keep at it, and you will get it. :) I have the Big Baby Taylor, a Cordoba Classical, two Rick Turner Model 1 electric guitars, and an Epiphone Les Paul with the walnut body, and an Epi Les Paul custom (the white tuxedo style body).
Hi Ponyboy, thanks for this tutorial. Great fingerpicking style. Excellent version in D minor with dropped D tuning. Note that with lowest E string dropped to D the fretted note at the 5th fret will be a G note and NOT an A note. Hence at 8m36-40s the power chord played is actually GDG and not an A5 power chord as you have notated. It is a G5 power chord. It is not an A5!🤔 but a G5. Hope you agree? Took me a huge amount of time thinking about this but am I correct?
This is tough to get right. Consistently plucking the drop d and d strings as well as the other parts is like patting your head and rubbing your tummy at the same time. Any advice on how to make this easier would be greatly received.
Nicely done! I'm always looking for tabs on this but can never find any that are correct. I was trying to play along with the studio version after this lesson and things sounded off until I threw a capo on the 2nd fret. Odd that Fleetwood Mac would do a drop for the live version. Either way, an amazing song, and a well done tutorial!
Thank you Ponyboy...I'm struggling with the fingering on right hand..i mean the alternating thumb is easy but then you add in the other strings...is that something that just takes practice or talent? (I can't play both hands piano either..) are you always just plucking one string besides the alternating 6 & 4? What is the finger pattern without the alternating thumb pattern?
Thanks mate love both versions just really enjoy the tinny almost banjo sound on the album been reading many tabs but they all vary greatly, the album version is two guitars is it not?
Oh, sorry i stand corrected - now i feel like old Mr Potatoe Head who i see on the shelf behind u, just find your lesson hard to follow. is it not in double d drop tuning? you actually play it very well i was just confused over the differences in the two versions. travis picking sounds great. Thanks for taking the time to upload / respond.
Actually the video you're referring to by "gtrjoeles" is of the Rumours album version... a different version than what I'm covering here. I should add that gtrjoeles is playing that version INcorrectly, considering the Rumours version has multi-tracked guitar parts. Thanks for playing though.
PonyboyInNewZealand Thanks for this video! Man, I tell ya, I learned Big Love acoustic version in 10 minutes with just the CD way before youtube ever came along, so I thought this one would be a piece of cake, but this is way harder to play than Big love!! Big love has one bass note to keep going, but this one there's two, so it makes transitioning harder! Practice makes perfect though, but I wont get any sleep until I perfect it! LOL! btw, I'm a girl, if I can do it, anyone can :)
I would actually like to retract my original abusive comment as I've began learning from your video & now think its the better of the two versions. Finally getting to grips with the picking technique & retuned to standard drop D. Cheers!
The only difference that I know of with the tuning between the two versions is that the Rumours one has a capo on the 2nd fret. I believe they are both in "drop D"... although I'm a bit of a mess with tunings and their names... I just tune the strings until they sound right. :)
Very nice job. I'm still missing something in the intro on the right hand. But i will get there, just need to practice a little more. Will definitely worth. Such a brilliant song
First off, great job. Loved learning your version Does the many riff of the Dsus2 continue during the part "Damn your love, damn you lies" I believe the chord changes...any thoughts?
Very helpful video, thanks a lot, mate! Just a note: I'm quite sure you're fingering G5 right there, not A5 :P Easy to confuse having the drop D tuning.
Hi Ponyboy, thanks for this tutorial. Great fingerpicking style. Excellent version in D minor with dropped D tuning. LOL... Sorry, I know that part can be tough to get. All that's happening is the thumb part (6th & 4th string) and also I'm picking the 2nd string w/ my middle finger. (Don't forget your left hand on the neck is alternating between the 1st and 3rd fret of the 2nd string...)
Cool video. I would like to note that the studio version seems to be in E and sounds like a couple guitar tracks. Also a live version from 1979 is apparently in E. Maybe they lowered it a whole step more recently to accommodate aging voices.
The Rumours version seems easier to learn for me being a beginner although your's sounds best. Double D tuning referred to is low E and high e both tuned down to D...but you are right DD is more commonly known as an ample bra size.

Really good vid, but theres something driving me up the wall! With the first part of the intro you play (3.43), the second run through the D chord you seem to add in an extra hit of a string, and I'm trying to work out what it is.. is it a pull off the A string?
I just played it a few times through. Immediately after that pull off on the 5th string, I hit the open 4th, and then the fretted 3rd string at the 3rd fret. Hmm...
Heh, that's alright. I got a wee bit short with you there. Both this version and the Rumours version are in Drop D tuning (not sure what double D is other than maybe a bra size) LOL
Hi Ponyboy, thanks for this tutorial. Great fingerpicking style. Excellent version in D minor with dropped D tuning. Ponyboy this is a great lesson you have here, after 10yrs I think you should give us a wee updated version, cheers fella 👍🏼🥃🏴
...BTW everything else sounds amazing! And you're right...99% of people play this song wrong, but your version is spot on!! Love the dance version!!
I started tonight thinking the main riff was basically impossible for me and about an hour in it clicked and I played it. Thanks man! (Now for the second bit with different timing for thumb and fingers, mmm-looks impossible.)
Thanks pal turn 55 this year . My kids would love your collection of toys .great song thanks again .
Definitely the best I've seen playing Lindsey's music & style...it's really great that you share this with everyone. Hope good things come your way:)
great video! loved how you not only broke things down into sections, but you also didn't cut corners - sounds exactly how it does on the recording. Keep up the great work!
it's perfect... do you have tabs...

Another Buck ragtimey classic.
I have seen it played in different tunings/capo position.
Wonder which one LB recorded it with.
Nice to see someone playing this song correctly for change.
Maybe I missed something, but does Lindsay go to G and F during the verse?
Hey! thanks for doing this. I used it to learn the song and it is one of the funnest songs that I play. Great job!!! thanks again...

@acchokiefan Hey -- Certainly glad to help, and thanks for the kind words :)

Love this song and really enjoyed your explanation on how to play it right. Great job!!!!
Awesome! thanks. I only wish you would slow down the finger picking at 11:10
Jaysus mate, any slower and he"d stop, lol. I think he slowed it down heaps enough for learners:)
Hi there! While the picking pattern on this version isn't *quite* the same you can put a capo on the 2nd fret and get where you wanna go. :)
Thank you Ponyboy...I'm struggling with the fingering on right hand..i mean the alternating thumb is easy but then you add in the other strings...is that something that just takes practice or talent? @bo440guitar You're welcome... there's a 2nd video for the other parts in the song in my channel. :)
I wish i could play like you, im learning the song, but from the first version when it was released, any advose on the finger picking?
It's hard and frustrating for me. But I need to practice. By the way, what guitar(s) do you have?
Real skills. Thanks from England

Hi Mr. Creek! Thanks for the lovely words. Glad I could help you! :)
Great job,,Very talented!!!
Better than anyone else!
Thank you.
It seriously sounds so great--I'm curious if you've posted a tab anywhere? It's hard for me to tell which fingers are picking!
Sienna Dailey Try using your ears more than your eyes. Experiment if you have to until you find the right note. You'll know it when you get it right.
Easily said. But when a beginner wants to learn a song, he has to look for a tab.
thanks im really enjoyingbthis tutorial you did a great job thanks for sharing
would you mind sending me the album tab as well? I've been looking all over as well, would greatly appreciate it!
First off, great job. Loved learning your version
Does the many riff of the Dsus2 continue during the part "Damn your love, damn you lies" I believe the chord changes...any thoughts?
@kdonovan512 You're welcome, glad I could help =)

How can you alter this version so that it sounds like the version on the 'Rumours' Album?
welcome brother ;) keep up the good work!
@ipwnguitar97 I don't have tabs for the whole song - sorry!
I am having the exact same prob. Could I possibly get those tabs in a email too? Thanks
hella awesome! LoL it's six months on a leaky boat! over & over again!
Nice one dude. It's in the set list.
@craiguitarz HA! That's nice of you to say. Never heard that before. I've been told I look like Tom Hanks more often than I can count. ;)
LOL... Sorry, I know that part can be tough to get. All that's happening is the thumb part (6th & 4th string) and also I'm picking the 2nd string w/ my middle finger. (Don't forget your left hand on the neck is alternating between the 1st and 3rd fret of the 2nd string...)

Great Instruction Ponyboy!
Have you ever thought about doing Robert Downey Jr. Impressions?
You Bear a remarkable resemblance....Lol
awesome lesson sir. thank you very much
great song and great tution, thanks
The Rumours version seems easier to learn for me being a beginner although your's sounds best. Double D tuning referred to is low E and high e both tuned down to D...but you are right DD is more commonly known as an ample bra size.
Hey VanillaFace... I would imagine this version is different because they wanted to shake things up a bit... also their voice registers had lowered over the years so this probably fit better. Really good vid, but theres something driving me up the wall! With the first part of the intro you play (3.43), the second run through the D chord you seem to add in an extra hit of a string, and I'm trying to work out what it is.. is it a pull off the A string?
Hey Nick, are you talking about the part where my middle finger comes off the 5th string (of the 3rd fret)?
Yes, there something you do in between the 5th string 3rd fret and the open d string/second string third fret
I just played it a few times through. Immediately after that pull off on the 5th string, I hit the open 4th, and then the fretted 3rd string at the 3rd fret. Hmm...
Hey Ponyboy ... thanks heaps for the tute. I was wondering what the underlying chords are in the verses?
Hey Shannie - check my vids you'll find a 2nd video "How to Play The Chain part 2"
Try doing the thumb parts alone by themselves, and then integrating it later
very good video can play it now thanks
Thank you Ponyboy. Helped a lot, great song.
Good teaching! Thanks 😊
Hey Ponyboy,
thanks a lot for your explanations, great job!!
Heh, that's alright. I got a wee bit short with you there. Both this version and the Rumours version are in Drop D tuning (not sure what double D is other than maybe a bra size) LOL
Thanks for revealing these secrets! I haven't mastered it. But that chord that you call A5 is a G5 - notes are G D G.
Hi Ponyboy, thanks for this tutorial. Great fingerpicking style.
Excellent version in D minor with dropped D tuning. Note that with lowest E string dropped to D the fretted note at the 5th fret will be a G note and NOT an A note.

You are really good! I just wanted to get your attention. :)
well done mate.well done.and thanks
Thanks for sharing that, I don't know chords 100% by name I just play by ear. Cheers :)
I need the tabs too. I listened to the song and made my own way to play it, but this one I would like to try. You went a little fast and I would like the tabs please. :)
can you help me out somehow with the finger picking in the beginning. I really want to learn this song but the only thing is the beginning finger picking .. thanks
Great video.
I am not a fan of altered tuning.
So just followed your lesson with normal tuning. It works.
Many thanks
Hey Lucky - well the song is in "normal" tuning... except for the 6th string.
Actually it's correct, I'm playing it based on "The Dance" live-version from 1997.... No capo. The version *with* the capo is on the Rumours album, good sir.
man that was cool I feel like a mac
@DavidRobertJon3s Sorry I don't have tab for the whole song.
DANCE is in D , original (better) was in E
requiring different positions
that's major point
excellent tutorial. thanks for sharing!
@howzitbrada1time I will email you a line of guitar tab for the first little run and see if that helps!
it would be supper helpful if you talked as you played especially considering the speed and video quality but other than that top notch stuff
If the plucking is complex because Lyndsey is a god damn genius, It would be super fuckin beneficial to actually tell us what the strumming.
Good vid dude love this song cheers dude! And rock on yourself :)
