I recently went through a Sega Ninja binge, fully completing all three official Sega versions (Ninja Princess on Saturn, The Ninja on SMS and finally the SG-1000 port of Ninja Princess). The best version for me has to be the western version of The Ninja on SMS. In case any fellow Sega nerds were curious about a random other Sega nerd's thoughts about a super obscure game from 1985-86.
Sega really was king of the arcades. I think that’s why I like this so much as well. Being a ninja and being able to sic your wolf on someone is an amazing concept. Give me the reboot of that.
I’m super curious! I haven’t played the Saturn or the SG1000 ones. True story, I rage quit so much on the SMS one when I was little, my mom returned it to the store! Of course I bought another copy years later. But I had a very love-hate-then love again relationship with the game.

Great video! I'm so glad I pre-ordered it, it ended up effectively being a Christmas present to myself. The cost and shipping for the giant arcade stick to Australia was not justifiable in my current financial situation but at least the controller is really good!

So close to pulling the trigger on this because that game list is pretty much tailored for me, haha. Really glad to hear that the gamepads are legit, too. That did cross my mind actually but I then forgot to try it. To be frank, I haven’t opened my Genesis Mini yet. I would say the controllers are the hidden gem here. The stick is legit.
That’s definitely part of the enthusiasm; it’s new Sega hardware. Thankfully they didn’t cut too many corners. The controllers, especially the stick, are pretty quality.
But the question i really walked away with was how much was the stick (if it is not much more then my pandoras box 6) I might be interested in buying one myself:)

It’s a pretty sweet little device. I dig the 80s to early 90s game theme they gave it. The gamepad and stick are f*cking awesome. 100% no regrets on the stick.
Not something that I’ve purchased myself but still interesting to see your perspective as an owner of an original cabinet. Glad it’s lived up to being worthwhile for you. I was pretty hyped for it when it was announced with some of the games that were revealed to be on it at first, but lost interest when the full game list was available. Still seems like a really nice collectors piece/display piece for the enthusiast.
The latter part of what you said is where I think a lot of people (self included) get caught up. It’s a cool collectible. The controllers are really almost the hidden gem here honestly. I’m also not a big puzzle guy and could have done with just one and been done with it. As someone else mentioned, even without a wheel, Outrun would have been a nice addition. Rad Mobile is fine but would have gladly approved swapping it for Outrun.
@@ScarletSprites Nope. They honestly look great, especially on the handheld itself. It also makes sense considering the fact that it’s based on the real life Astro City cabinets.
A few people have said it’s supposed to be a play on both a 6 and a G, and another said the G in Sega is a spacing issue with the A. Just found it interesting.
sir you are a true sega arcade fan so many details that other reviewers never mentione, too bad sega use 16:9 lcd in it but with 720p finally i see a clear face of Akira in vf1 intro lol, sorry for my bad english wish you a happy new year
Looks really awesome I just wish there had been a couple of extra more commonly known titles. Was hoping for Die Hard Arcade. Also no outrun/outrunners!? I know they never would have been in an Astro City but I don’t think Rad Mobile was either.
I would agree with you that I wished they would have snuck Outrun onto this despite the nuances you mentioned. I’m not really a Rad Mobile fan and I think Outrun would have been fun even with the control pad.
Aw yeah, time to enjoy the Astro video. Appreciate it. Might want to get this down the road or just get the Arcade Stick at least (looks badass). Please let me know if the stick works on PC, Switch and PS3 like the Retrobit Genesis/Saturn controllers if you bought it. I use a Brook PS3toPS4 converter for the Retrobit controllers on my PS4 and Streets of Rage 4 is bliss with the genesis gamepad. Take it easy and happy New Year. 😊✌️
I really want one so bad.... And you know it's gonna be hacked eventually. Here's hoping someone throws Final Burn Alpha on that thing, would be nice to play other arcade games from Capcom, Taito, etc.
We’ll see. I was disappointed with the Neo Mini not having convenient hacking options and I think a lot of people are still waiting on the TG16/Mini hacks we saw ages ago but never really came to fruition. I supply it depends on how many peoples hands this gets into and how easy it is to do. I’m kind of gunshy banking on hacks at this point.
Great review! You actually talked me out of buying it /0: ... I don't know any of these games and they don't look very fun to me. And if I can't stretch it to 16:9, I'm OUT. I can usually scale games well on my Pi where I can get these. BUT.... that sweet joy stick is a different story! Hope you do a video on it. I really think I'll get it. Please test it on Switch.
I’d agree the true gem in all of this is the Arcade Stick. It’s especially cool that it can be used elsewhere on other hardware. I unfortunately can’t test it on my Switch since I sold it last year. I can imagine that it likely works fine with an adapter similar to other sticks but I’d obviously wait for confirmation on that.
@Scarlet Sprites GO SEGA ANS 60 SEGA are both relevant. Japanese love to play with letters logos Kanjis Katakanas Hiraganas and even Romanjis. The curve of the G was made on purpose. 🙂
Great Review! I’ve really been wanting to import one of these and it looks like it might actually be worth it! Seems like it’s actually a quality little unit with a great list of games - Mostly want it for my collection more than anything else but it actually looks playable especially with the game pad.
The unit itself is probably a collector piece for most, although there are definitely some decent games on it. The gamepad and stick are the true heroes of this set imo.
Thanks man. Aside from things I’m on the fence about, I probably watch videos on products/games I know I won’t buy just because I’m curious. It’s like a way to experience it without having to buy it.
@@ScarletSpritesThx for the reply. It appears that only the Mega Drive Mini controllers do work on the Astro City Mini, but not the Genesis Mini controllers nor Retro-bit controllers. That's why I am curious how much the Genesis Mini is compatible with these controllers.
I’m super bummed I didn’t know about the version that came with the tokens till after I got mine. I really love the display for them and think it would go great with my new Astro city cab (OG)
I saw that as well, looks cool. I’m not too hung up about it and honestly I have been trying to clear “extras” like that lately. That’s partly why I didn’t buy the stool and stand for this too. Maybe you can chase the coin set down separately? Not sure if people are unloading that separately or not.
Good video I remember getting die hard arcade in a game center I serviced did like the controls on the cab but not a fan of them overall. I am massive Capcom champion edition cabinets fan and for shooters old williams cabs are very nice and crisp . Wells garner always nice.
You know, that has almost become somewhat of a pet peeve of mine. For one I don’t have a great way of measuring it objectively so any remarks I make regarding it are just based on feel. I don’t know any of these games extremely well enough to feel comfortable commenting based on feel. That’s almost always immediately met with someone then saying they didn’t notice any lag. I suppose secondly, these things are all emulation based so we can assume there is going to be some level of it happening somewhere. It just becomes a real rabbit hole and without any way to actually test inputs/response I just opted not to discuss it. There was nothing here that felt unplayable the way Super Star Soldier did on TG16 or that stood out to me glaringly like Ninja Gaiden.
@@ScarletSprites. That's a bummer but I understand. Testing input lag objectively is a lot of work. The only way I know of to check input lag objectively on these emulation machines is the, "pad hack" technique. That's where you hook up a light buld to your controller-its a lot of work. Personally I would prefer if reviewers gave their subjective opinion. I made a video on this topic recently. I think you might be interested th-cam.com/video/wX34BbMWT8Q/w-d-xo.html
@@riggel8804 There are a handful of console games that I definitely feel like I can weigh in on subjectively (like I mentioned for the TG16) but for this I just opted to skip it. Virtua Fighter is probably the one I know best out of the lot here. You're correct about the lighted button technique and while that interests me and definitely adds value, I often just don't have the time to do things like that unfortunately. Thanks for sharing your video, I'll check it out.
@@ScarletSprites . Please do. My video was specifically made for people in your situation-reviewers that want to test input ag but don't have the time to setup a pad hack.
First of all, that US Virtua Fighter cabinet is beautiful. Next, what made you go with the 2P Seimitsu controls? I know basically all arcade cabinets had a broken button or two and lots of owners just find a button the right size and call it a day with no regard given to whether or not they match or are the same part number, but you're def not one of those people lol. It's a shame this is Japanese exclusive for the moment. I really want one even more now lol
Great video btw. Nice and in-depth without saying a single word too much. I was going to buy the arcade stick until I saw that price tag... so I just customized a new Mayflash. Hope to complete it soon!
The short answer is that they originally came with Sanwa buttons and I just didn’t like them. It’s a personal preference of course, but I find the Sanwas too mushy when pressing. The Seimitsus are a little more stiff and kind of give more of a confirmation to you that you’ve actually pressed them, if that makes sense. Yes, I’ll never understand owning a gorgeous original arcade machine, something that cost you money, time, labor, and real estate in your house...only to junk it up with mismatched buttons that make it look trash. Buttons are usually like $2.50-ish, hardly something breaking the bank. Why you would go cheap and make your prized possession look like ass is beyond me.
Overall awesome review but I gotta comment on your claim "Most 3D games do in fact look better on a modern display"... have you played PSX, Saturn or N64 lately on them? 😂 Sorry but I have them connected in RGB via Framemeister on a HDTV but the image quality pales in comparison to a CRT monitor.
The N64 looks like garbage regardless of what it’s hooked up to imo. When I had the UltraHDMI mod running, it was the only console I’d ever use fake scanlines on. The more that’s hidden coming out of that thing the better. Early 3D in general is pretty rough. Moving past that and into GC, DC, XB territory I like what I’ve seen on modern displays.
@@ScarletSprites The poor N64 gets no love from many gamers, lol. It really depends on the games and developers. Early Nintendo games like Super Mario 64, Wave Race 64 and 1080 Snowboarding didn't abuse so much of the anti-aliasing technology that was brand new for consoles during that generation, and imo those games still look good due to the simpler textures and more colorful palette. Over time some N64 game devs just seemed to turn the blurriness dial up to 11, as frame rates plummeted to 15 fps or less. I agree, DC, GC and Xbox games look great on HDTVs however the PS2 is the exception, I think still prefer this console via component on a CRT even though the Framemeister does a great job with it.
As cool as this thing looks I'm really glad I didn't jump on the preorders. Outside of Revenge of Death Adder there is nothing on here that really grabs me. I do really dig the look of the arcade stick though...
@@ScarletSprites yeah I think these little mini consoles are cool but nothing I would want to collect... I am however dying to know more information on the NEO•GEO 3 and the new Metal Slug that SNK are working on.
I had one of those sticks for the Saturn and they’re honestly an 8/10 like a decent hori. Certainly not worth the price they retailed at let alone the scalper prices
I would definitely give the games list a B+ so many good titles on this with many that have never seen the light of day outside of an arcade, I could have done without 3 columns games though haha

This is the selling point for me🤑, Hopefully that these games are all broadcasted in ((stereo sound 🎧)) .... Or otherwise that could be a DEALBREAKER 📵 for me. 🤧
Those really are the big ones imo. Death Adder was a nice addition and I really hadn’t played that all that much tbh so it’s cool to have that on this unit. I don’t care much for the puzzle games that were included but I may be in the minority on that.
@@ScarletSprites Wow thanks for the comment... I just ordered Fatal Fury 3 for Neo-Geo AES Japanese Cartridge $119.00. I also modded my AES console with Unibos 4.0 back in August its perfect... Yeah that caught me a little off guard but I suppose isn’t terribly surprising. Konami did a similar thing with the TG16/PCE Mini recently.
@@ScarletSprites - my Japanese Mega Drive Mini 6-button controller works on this just to let you know :)
Can you play 2-player with one player on the gamepad and the other on the built-in controls?
Making it really hard for me not to pick one of these up Sprites!
It’s a pretty sweet little device. I dig the 80s to early 90s game theme they gave it. The gamepad and stick are f*cking awesome. 100% no regrets on the stick.
@@ScarletSprites definitely grabbing one soon! Can’t wait for the video on the arcade stick!
There is a pink buttoned device, controller and fight stick FYI.
Yeah I saw that they did those limited editions. I think the unit itself is even in a “New Astro city” model.
Mayflash f300 works great with this. Also the 8bitdo m30 sega genesis mini controller works with this
I wondered about the M30. That’s the one controller I’ve heard so many great things about that I don’t own.
@@ScarletSprites it's a really Nice controller. Good build. Very sturdy and moet very expensive. 8bitdo makes geest products and this is one of Them.
I for one like screen filters such as scanlines and smoothing.
Well the scanlines on this one might have you rethinking that.
@@ScarletSprites Nope. They honestly look great, especially on the handheld itself. It also makes sense considering the fact that it’s based on the real life Astro City cabinets.
Lol I think the designer messed up with the go sega I think even they were confused great catch
A few people have said it’s supposed to be a play on both a 6 and a G, and another said the G in Sega is a spacing issue with the A. Just found it interesting.
I'd buy a Capcom Cute Mini or a Taito Egret Mini in a heartbeat...
I agree, I was thinking the same. A Konami Windy maybe? They got adventurous with the PCE/TG16 mini already.
sir you are a true sega arcade fan so many details that other reviewers never mentione, too bad sega use 16:9 lcd in it but with 720p finally i see a clear face of Akira in vf1 intro lol, sorry for my bad english wish you a happy new year
Happy New Year to you too! Akira never looked better! Virtua Fighter is gorgeous on the Astro Mini. Thanks for commenting!
Thanks man. I don’t have a Switch or Playstation to test the stick on but can confirm it works great with MiSTer or a Raspberry Pi.
Great review man! Can't wait for mine to arrive.
Hope you enjoy it!
Get one this Christmas from my dad has got sonic hedgehog game on it
Great review!
@@ScarletSprites Thanks for the response!
I think it's a cool little unit, doubt I'll be getting one though the price seems kind of high
I’d agree. I like it a lot more at $99. Importing doesn’t help either.
@Scarlet Sprites GO SEGA ANS 60 SEGA are both relevant. Japanese love to play with letters logos Kanjis Katakanas Hiraganas and even Romanjis. The curve of the G was made on purpose. 🙂
That definitely seems to make the most sense.
Finally the Astro city mini review that matters
Thanks man!
been enjoying it a lot! playing Golden Axe the Revenge of Death Adder has been a treat
I’d totally agree. That’s what I’ve played the most of as well.
@@ScarletSprites yeah I mostly want it for my collection. Do you think the stick is worth the import?
As always, best review! Wish I had preordered this back when it was available..maybe in the future the US will get some nice stuff like this.
I had heard that it’s gone in and out of stock. A few people mentioned the Arcade Stick is now gone from all retailers unfortunately.
I am not that interested in the base unit but the controllers do catch my attention.
Yeah, the controllers are pretty legit by themselves. The stick is a beast.
Great review, even if I know that I don't want one of these! I can't wait for the stick review! 👍
Thanks man. Aside from things I’m on the fence about, I probably watch videos on products/games I know I won’t buy just because I’m curious. It’s like a way to experience it without having to buy it.
Happy New Year Scarlett!
Same to you man!
Can you make a video testing whether Astro City Mini controllers work on the Genesis Mini?
I’m guessing they do. Someone confirmed the Genesis Mini controllers work on the Astro City.
The WG monitors are awesome. As much as I like the Nanao’s in the Candy Cabs the K7000s of the day look great on a decent tube. Truly spectacular.
Another great video, thanks for covering this!
Thanks man!
Great review! Thank you ^_^
Thanks man!
That all sounds good but what about that lag???
I think you might be interested
th-cam.com/video/wX34BbMWT8Q/w-d-xo.html
Good to see a review from someone who owns the original hardware. For me the main downside is the costs. Otherwise it looks awesome!
I’d agree. If it could be had for $100 or less it’s instantly more palatable. Tough being Japan only too, that’s not helping.
why do you gotta keep doing this to me man..first that damn SNK Neo Mini and now I gotta buy this damn thing..you bastard..I'll get you..
Happy New Year! I’m sorry about the Neo Mini, this is actually better imo. The Arcade Stick is pretty decent but apparently sold out everywhere now.
Yes to all 3 questions. Great video just subscribed. 👍🏻🕹
Perfect, on both accounts!
16:9 display, what kind of choice
Strange considering how small the LCD is. My guess is it would have been more costly for them to source since 4:3 isn’t used as much any more.
its a nice toy, the big arcade stick is really awesome and also the pad, i love the colors. thanks for sharing.
I’d agree the Stick/Gamepad are the real gems in the collection.
The arcade stick is badass. The things weighs over six pounds and is fitted with Sanwa parts. It’s pretty legit for something retail.
@Markus Müller The original Astro City has Sanwa Parts to. Sega and Konami always Sanwa Parts. Neo Geo has Seimitsu.
Yeah this isn't for me... great video as always.
Thanks for stopping by again Chuck! Definitely not for everyone, especially at the price point. Thanks for the kind words about the video though.
The game list: it almost has EVERY sega classic game of the 80 and early 90 that doesn't need wheel or gun (yeah, I know... Moonwalker, but rights...)
It’s those puzzle games I could have done without, but that’s a personal opinion more than anything. The inclusion of Death Adder was really sweet.
Great Review mate seen a few others this has been the best one
Happy New Year Cheers From Australia
Happy New Year to you as well! Thanks man!
The 6 button genesis pad form genesis mini doesn't even work on the astro mini which is kind of annoying
I think someone mentioned the 3 button ones work with this but I haven’t been able to try that to confirm.
@@ScarletSprites I didn't try that yet
I would definitely give the games list a B+ so many good titles on this with many that have never seen the light of day outside of an arcade, I could have done without 3 columns games though haha
I’m not a big puzzle guy tbh. I agree, one of those would have been fine. Probably won’t ever load it again after this week.
Hah, that's great! Sega forcing people to play their games with the correct video setting. So no one can be an idiot by accident.
There’s a new Sega slogan in there somewhere.
Hey Scarlet,
Wishing you and your love ones a Happy New Year. Thank you as always for contributing so much to the Neo-Geo thread on Atariage.com, and for the community to enjoy and benefit on what you offer. 8^)
Anthony..
Same to you man, Happy 2021!
Modern Gamer: I want a 16:9 stretched option.
SEGA: Frig you, weirdo. You'll play games the right way.
They’re not even acknowledging that nonsense.
LFG 💪💪💪
You know it. 👊
Library is underwhelming and arcade games can be ruined by input lag. Would have loved more model 1, 2, and stv games
Yaaaasssss
Thanks Linda 👊🏻
SEGA!
Hard not to hear that in the 90s screaming voice.
I'm just gona have to wait to get a English Region Market machine if it comes out!
🕹🤩🕹 Yes I'd spend the money, Golden Axe, Shinobi, Altered Beast👀 I first seen these games in the Arcades in 1987 I was 9 years old... This is the selling point for me🤑, Hopefully that these games are all broadcasted in ((stereo sound 🎧))
As far as puzzles go I will spend over $300.00 for a Neo-Geo AES Cartridge Conversation for Bubble Bobble someday, but that's the extent of it man! I'm with you on that on puzzle games🤘🏻😜 however this Atrocity Mini has got me excited, is it in Stereo🎧 do you know by the way?

The second I seen 16:9 screen, I switched off. Wtf?
It’s odd looking powered off and I’m not sure why they couldn’t have sourced a 4:3 for it. Overall though the rest of the unit is pretty decent and thankfully the games display in 4:3.
@@ScarletSprites.... I can't stand to look at unnecessary black bars each side of the screen. 4:3 ratio or nothing. It's such a shame as it looks cool other than that.
You’re playing fast and loose with the word interesting. 😅
