Now THIS is where the fun begins! I remember reading this and really liking it until the last issue where the art really nosedives for some reason. I find Ulic a very layered character, but I wont go into detail to avoid spoiling the story for you. I would recommend reading the interview to Tom Veitch from Star Wars Galaxy Magazine #13 in which he really delves into the themes of the story, the dark side, and the original trilogy. For him, Ulic is a tragic though somewhat heroic character. Perhaps this doesn't fully align with your understanding of the light and the dark side, but Veitch makes it coherent with George Lucas' ideas. Let's just say the big idea is that the characters HAVE to delve into the dark side in some form or another.
