First off, thanks for watching my video. This is an excellent question. Let me start by saying this is 100% a matter of personal preference. Now I will tell you my personal preference :-). I have been gaming Newports since 2003 when I started in the Cameron hobby. For the past 9 years I've been gaming the deep milled Tour Rat that I show briefly in this video. About a month ago I threw a Special Select Newport in the bag to try it out. I have to say that for some reason I have been putting better with the Special Select Newport. The only thing that makes sense is the change in weighting. The new Specials weigh 283g empty versus 320g empty for my rat. Scotty did this to move more weight (37grams to be exact) to the heel and toe for more stability. This is why a 2018 Select Newport at 350g has two 15g weights in it and a Special at 350g has two 35g weights. I can also say that the Special Select Newport is as close as Scotty has come to the 009 head shape in an OTR (straight shoulders, wide cavity, flat-ish top, tri-sole. I touch on this near the end of the video. All this being said, I cannot fault you for choosing any of these three putters - they are all works of art. Good luck with your purchase!
@@wheard71 Firstly, this is probably the 3rd time I’ve watched your video, so thank you for making it! Which ever one I get, I am going to get it customised. If I get the tei3 or studio style, I may get weights added to the bottom the same as the 2020 Newport has. My local putter specialist can do this at the same time as changing my line up lines, he says he has done this before to other customers with no adverse effects. I do want the slightly heavier feel for sure, not too floaty and light. I know the modern Newport is the simple choice, but I love the idea of creating my own unique, slightly modernised version, of one of the insert classics. What do you think of that? And if you had to choose between tei3 and studio style, which would you go and why? To me the tei3 has a certain wow factor, but the GSS face in the studio style is special too. Thank you for your time sir!
@@wheard71 and with keeping overall weight close to Identical and being able to move an extra 20 grams to both the Heel and Toe, Scotty has increased the MOI, essentially making the *Special Select* more like a Mallet. I have had a 2018 *Select* Newport 2.5, since the Summer of 2018, and it is the first SC Putter that I liked, and I have checked out SCs since they first appeared. All, up to my 2018, felt like I was *Hitting a Rock with a Hammer,* using Balata or Urethane, compared to my 1991 or '92 Bullseye Wide Blade.
Very informative much appreciated. Can you explain the difference between the Newport and Newport 2 in the special select line as i am looking to make a purchase. Thank you
The Newport 2 has a more Squared Off look than the Newport. The Newport 2 has a bit more Toe Flow than the Newport due to having a little more weight towards the Toe. The N and N2 setup identically. For most, it is "the look" that determines choice as they putt virtually Identical.
I would agree, but that being said I don't knock anyone's preference for head shape - except for Adam Scott's - his putters look terrible. Anyway, I'm not trying to sway anyone from a Newport 2 to a Newport, I just happen to have a bunch of Newports and thought it would be fun to show the changes over the years. Newport 2's have had similar model year tweaks over the years, I just am not as familiar with them.
Great question! The black and lime tour rat that you see at 9:50 in the video has been my gamer for the past 7 years. It's not the technology so much as it is look/sound/feel that I'm comfortable giving me confidence standing over a putt. This can be just as true for an OTR as it is for a tour putter. Find what you like and stick with it!
Good question. It looks like Scotty first made the Santa Fe in 1996 in the second year of the "Classics" line, again in 1997 when a Santa Fe joined the Teryllium line, in 1998 there was another Teryllium Santa Fe and an Oil Can version was added. The Oil Can version lasted for two years, but the Teryllium stuck around through 2001. That was the end of the Santa Fe name. Beginning in 2004, this head style was dubbed the Newport 1.5. Check out the putter archive at scottcameron.com for great pics of each of these models (www.scottycameron.com/putter-archive/). The santa fe is a cool old-school putter. Dude I really want to buy a Scotty NP but the weights are throwing me off. Wouldn’t it be better just to have one solid piece of stainless? I want a heavier head at 35” can I just add heavier weights?
The weights were increased because the 2020 *Specia Select* has a smaller lighter head allowing more Toe and Heel weight, with Keeping the *total Head Weight* the same for Swing Weight uniformity. Try lightening your Grip Pressure rather than increasing the Overall Weight AND Swing Weight.

@@aspears5908 I’m a big Santa Fe fan. Scotty’s first Santa Fe style putter was in his original line of putters. It was called the Classic 1.5 Prototype. I’d liked to see pictures if you still have it.
@@wheard71 I bought my first Scotty in 1999 or maybe 2000. It was a SantaFe Tel3 that my friend that owned a golf shop recommended. Now I'm a putter hoarder, if you ask my wife!
And, I still rotate the SantaFe in and out of my bag today, almost 25yrs later. I still LOVE that putter!!
I'm about to send her to chisdaddy golf to have her restored to her original beauty.
No California editions?
Hello and thanks for your comment. Unfortunately, Scotty has not made a Newport in the California line. If he did I would probably have it 🙂
what about the tei3 where is that.
Hello and thanks for your question. I don't have an old school Tei3 in my collection, but the headshape is exactly the same as the Oilcan Classics and Gun Blue Classics Newports. As for the newer T22's, I had one for a short while but I don't remember the specifics of how it compared to the Selects.
What is the tei3 long neck worth now?
I have the same problem as you, way too many putters 😀
Dude I really want to buy a Scotty NP but the weights are throwing me off. Wouldn’t it be better just to have one solid piece of stainless? I want a heavier head at 35” can I just add heavier weights?
The weights were increased because the 2020 *Specia Select* has a smaller lighter head allowing more Toe and Heel weight, with Keeping the *total Head Weight* the same for Swing Weight uniformity.
Try lightening your Grip Pressure rather than increasing the Overall Weight AND Swing Weight.
