  • This is the Kingsnorth power station in Hoo, Kent, UK from building it to its demolition.
Built on the site of the former World War I airship base RNAS Kingsnorth, Kingsnorth power station was constructed between 1963 and 1973 by the Central Electricity Generating Board (CEGB). From 1975 to the early 1980s, Kingsnorth was linked to the London power grid by HVDC Kingsnorth, one of the few examples of high-voltage direct current transmission then in use.
Kingsnorth was a dual-fired coal and oil power station. The four-unit station was operated by energy firm E.ON UK, and had a generating capacity of 2000 megawatts.
The station closed as a result of the EU's Large Combustion Plant Directive (LCPD), which requires stations that are not equipped with flue-gas desulfurization (FGD) technology to close after 20,000 hours of operation from 1 January 2008 or the end of 2015, whichever comes first. Kingsnorth ceased generation on 17 December 2012, having consumed all its LCPD hours.
Demolition of the coal handling plant commenced on Thursday 23 October 2014 with a series of controlled explosions. The station's turbine hall was demolished on 9 July 2015. The final part of the boiler house was demolished by explosion on 27 July 2017.
The 650 ft (198m) concrete chimney was demolished by explosives at 10:00 am on 22 March 2018.

I worked on the Kingsnorth power station for Eubank & Partners - the construction consultants for about 4 years, I was 23. At the time Kingsnorth was at the forefront of technology and I felt Privileged and proud to be part of the project.
The site was reclaimed from the mash (mentioned in Charles Dickens Great Expectations). Convict boats were anchored in the Estuary. Convicts trying to escape usually perished in the marshes. One of the blokes I worked with, worked on the pilling crews. Once the piles were in the dredgers pumped slurry into the site. The skeletons of the prisoners who had perished in the marshes absorbed phosphorus and glowed in the dark. Most of the pilling crew were Superstitious Irish - the glowing skulls scared the poo out of them.
I also worked on the Isle of Grain power station - both built and destroyed in less than one lifetime. All the man hours that went into those 2 buildings, gone.

Wow that's a pretty cool story, must be sad to see all that hard work being demolished!
Have a look through my other videos there's one of dead man's island that talks about those prison hulks and the bodies from them, deadman's island is just across the river from kingsnorth power station.

I grew up on the Hoo Peninsula and as a child I considered both the Kingsnorth and Isle Of Grain power stations to be such fantastical edifices of permanence. I completely understand why they had to go, and yet, that echo of my childhood self didst feel a fleeting pang of sadness at their passing...
Fun fact: Construction began at Kingsnorth the year I was born.

@@Medwaydroneexploration lol. One fabulous memory I recall is of the light from the twin flares of the now defunct BP refinery playing on the structure of the IoG chimney, which had the remarkable effect of making it look as if it was dancing. Kinda cool but weird at the same time. 😉

I used to live in Vicarage Lane Hoo, moved away in the early 90s. I've not been back since the station went. It would feel strange as it dominated the skyline as you went down vicarage Lane.

it is strange it's not there anymore but like all things, we get used to it, eventually it will be forgotten that it was ever there unfortunately
