Thats a cool experiment, I would like to suggest placing some thick towels over the the top of the bottles to help hold the cool air in. The weak point on coolers is the seam around the lid. the towels will help keep the cool air from escaping.

This makes a lot of sense. It also doesn't help that sometimes (when I'm in a hurry, especially), I forget to close the lid tightly. I don't think it's make-or-break, since seeds go through temperature fluctuations in nature also, but it would help me sleep better at night!

@@BriansPermacultureProject I agree 100% with that stateme t about weather fluctuations. My fridge is outside in an unheated garage, my chestnuts tend to freeze a couple times over the winter. Someone told me I should not let them freeze because it will kill them and they won't germinate. My reply was that in nature do you not think they go through freezing temperatures?
I stratified 400 nuts last year only 3 dis not germinate. And they went through a couple days of freezing.
I will say that I believe the closer to freezing the longer it will take the radical to emerge. But I am ok with that as I dont pot mine up till April

If you move the cooler and put it in a shadow the temperature will drop, a tree shade is ideal, btw where do you buy the american chestnuts.

I think you're right - that dark plastic definitely soaks up a lot of sunlight. I get all my chestnut seeds from Burnt Ridge Nursery in Washington. They can also be found at Scheffield's seeds, and also Schumacher Seeds. Most sources have a limited supply, so they may be sold out by now.
