- A quick tour of the charm and history of the iconic Bond Minicar.
From its unique design to its incredible story. Watch now to learn more about this compact marvel from the past and why it continues to fascinate car lovers today!
You said the engine was mounted on the rear wheel. However, it has two back wheels and the engine was in front, so it was on the front wheel.
I had a neighbour who had one. IIRC, to start the engine you had to open the bonnet (hood) to climb inside to kick start it like a motor bike. It was taxed as a motor bike because it had no reverse gear. It was somewhat popular because it was the cheapest way to buy a 'car' but the cost in inconvenience was pretty heavy. Not for the faint of heart!
You are right about the motorcycle licence, they would reverse if the right parts were fitted . Stop the engine, push the key in and the starter would turn backwards and turn the engine the other way giving you 3 or 4 reverse gears. All a bit pointless as steering had 180 degree lock and it was easier to pick up the back end if you were stuck. I had one when I was 15!
It was driven by the front wheel and the engine revolved with the steering hence the large bonnet (hood)
OK! Thank you! I wondered what the narrator said about the drive......
To understand this car you need to have lived in Great Britain at the time - just after the war. It was more or less a motorcycle, where you didn’t get wet when it rained, instead of the usual motorcycle combination ( bike and sidecar)….when you did. The Reliant regal and Robin went a bit further with better engineering and was more car like with a 4cyl inline engine, and wasn’t dangerous if you drove it properly. 😁 I’ve experienced both, and they were fun, if not fast.
You say the Bond 3-wheeler was discontinued in 1966. Which is only PARTLY true.
The Bond 875 (with an 875cc 4-cylender 4 stroke engine driving he REAR wheels) was in production from 1965 to 1970. And it was still a 3-wheeler that was still taxed as a motorcycle and could be still driven on a motorcycle licence.
Reminds me of a Reliant Robin
A great deal slower than a Reliant Robin
@@robredz -Actually, in 1966 the Bond 875 was quite powerful. It had a four-cylinder 875 cc 34 b.h.p. four-stroke engine driving the REAR wheels. And it actually outperformed many smaller 4-wheel cars like the Hillman Imp.
@@rumi9005 It would be quicker than an imp as it weighed less and actually had the same engine as an imp.
No! The engine did NOT drive the rear wheels.
It was mounted on the FRONT wheel and turned with the wheel as you steered. The used Bond I had in 1966 didn't even have a self-starter. You opened up the hood and kick-started the motercycle engine mounted to the front wheel. In fact you can SEE the kick-starter in the video (at 2:33 mins in).
It wasn't until Bond 875 (still a three-wheeler) that the engine engine drove he REAR wheels. The 875 had a proper (lower-compression (8:1) four-cylinder 875 cc 34 b.h.p.) four-stroke engine. Amazingly, though, it was still only 882 lb. It was still taxed as a motorcycle and could still be driven on a motorcycle licence - even though it had better performance than small four-wheel cars like the Hillman Imp.
Thanks..
Why didn’t you say how many were produced or still exist?
Sorry for that mate ✌️😅
You could drive it on a motorcycle licence and not a car licence.
Had a teacher in the 60,s who had one.. Then upgraded to a popular Morris Minor.
A Tom Brady AI narrator?! Why don't you just HIRE AN ACTUAL HUMAN BEING TO NARRATE?!! Smmfh
Maybe in the future mate 😅 but thanks anyway 👍❤️😁
