Brings back a lot of great memories of my Dad, brother and myself playing this game...used to get so full of angst. And if we would hit a mine driving into a cove it would really hurt! lol!
My friends and I LOVED to go after each other with this game. Still one of the best laughs I can remember: I was advancing toward my buddy's base with my fleet. He asked, "Is that your minesweeper?" One second later... BOOM! I lose a ship to a mine. I looked at David, and said, completely deadpan, "Nnnnnnope!" Good times.
Great game. I would typically play with just one ship and keep the other two in reserve away from the action and only pull them out if my main ship was sunk.
You could get multiple boats going in different directions. I’d control the PT boat to make it go slower than it otherwise could. People would think it was the troop transport but nope, surprise, you are about to lose your sub.
Happy memories indeed. There was quite a lot of subtle strategy in this game, what with the different ship types and their armaments. The minelaying and sweeping was an act of minor (pun intended) genius. And IIRC with a bit of practice even the steady away mine sweeper could be a proper fighting ship! The troop transport WAS a bit of a dog though. And again, with practice you could get all your ships moving, albeit only under occasional control! Lol Great game, beautifully balanced, hours of fun had with my brother and friends. Wonder what the designers went on to and if there was ever a sequel? That said... It was near perfect 😀
Thanks for the in-depth comment! It was programmed by Ken Smith of APh Consulting who also worked on a handful of Intellivision sports games. I'm not aware of a sequel, just the completed and canceled Atari 2600 version. If there was ever a sequel considered it would have disappeared in 1984 as many game ideas/prototypes did when Mattel Electronics closed. Some of the old Intellivision properties could re-appear on the Amico next year.
Hearing that music takes me back to one of my childhood best friend’s living room playing this game. He killed himself at age 40 after finding his wife cheating on him. RIP
Nobody made agreements You just put no more than 2 ships in a fleet at most Pt and subs used torpedoes and would usually support minelayers minesweepers and aircraft carriers Battleships and destroyers you would send out separately to attack formations
I have NO IDEA why today's game designers haven't upgraded this via grafics and a more user friendly controller/keyboard setup. It would be a HUGE hit! I think it would change today's gaming scene if done properly, because this game was as addictive and fun as any first person shooter out there, and the element of strategy and tactics would make it that much more engaging.
The rights to this specific title are likely in the hands of Intellivision Entertainment now but someone could certainly make a copycat game. I'd guess the developers (I'm thinking the small, indie studios) most likely to be inspired by retro games are less familiar with games published by Mattel than those of Atari or the major arcade game makers back then.
@@Vault1541 Would be a simply FANTASTIC multiplayer network game. The amount of participants would only be limited by the number of ships in play. This could be an epic rewrite, an industry changer. The original concept was just that perfect. Apply today's grafics, and the internet? Could be the final nail in the coffin of the Western male. Seriously, it could rival the bandwidth porn pulls... Or maybe not. Maybe I am a hopeless Sea Battle geek. Hard for me to be objective I suppose...
Loved the PT boat! It could run circles around everything... it didn't hit hard, and could be knocked over with a feather, but, oh, the stick and move! I used to do the same thing to a couple of my uncles and my friends when I was a kid as well.
That why you don't group ships together. That PT boat in the hands of a skilled player is devastating. You don't want to have multiple ships sitting idle with a PT boat dropping torpedos.
The Amico does look like it could be fun but I feel like the price is going to be an obstacle, especially if the Nintendo Switch price decreases by then. I guess it is off to a good start though as the Founder's Edition sold out on the first day of pre-orders I believe. If you're following Intellivision Entertainment you've probably seen the new versions of Night Stalker (1-4 players) and Astrosmash (1-2 players). It's definitely targeting local multiplayer experiences so I'm not sure if they'll make a Sea Battle with a computer opponent but you never know.
I loved this game. So unique. Only problem was I had a hard time finding friends who were competitive. I would routinely wipe out their entire fleets just with my PT Boat 😊
Yeah, I had that problem with a lot two-player only games since most people I knew didn't own video games and my sister didn't care for these types of games. .
bACK IN THE EIGHTies i was a kid a loved this game then went on to the c-64 and then Amiga 1000, and so on and so fourth now got the latest cosoles but you cant beat the old stuff they where iconic and i still have heaps of old c-64 games on cassette and i have all the intellavision games on my xbox as an emulator its great
omg this game was so col back in the day, my friend had this game and also fotball, i thought he was so cool, just rich parents who spoiled him. Then a year or so later my big brother bought me colecovision and i was the man. bwahahaha
Thanks for the nostalgic video. I however must say that this game sucked monkey balls back in 1980, and it sucks worse monkey balls now. I'd rather scrape paint off my garage than play this.
This was a great game! Although my friend routinely kicked my butt at it, Sea Battle was one of the cherished titles on Intellivision.
the controls being awkward aside, two skilled players that know how to play it well make for a really entertaining game!
Brings back a lot of great memories of my Dad, brother and myself playing this game...used to get so full of angst. And if we would hit a mine driving into a cove it would really hurt! lol!
I'd always try to lay mines right outside my dad's respawn cove.
@@beehivewithaview9760 that was the strategy.
Me.
Myself is reflexive.

Good times.
My favorite game from my childhood. I could never get enough. The games between my friends and I were epic!
i agree, its the first for sure. I remember this game from when it came out, was sooooo fun. great vid!
My mom always beat me playing this game. She claimed that she didn't know what she was doing, and proceeded to win. Good times, great memories.
I loved this game. My dad got this console for me my Jr. year in high school.
He should have gotten you a voucher to a brothel.
Great game for the time. Some people say Utopia was the first RTS but they seem to forget about Sea Battle.
No doubt, a head to head classic!
Loved this game! It was great to see my mines take out my brother's ships!
I loved, loved, loved this game, so many years ago.
This was by far the best game on intellivision 2. PT boat for life
This was such an awsome game, we played it all the time.
Great game for 1980! I loved seeing my opponent hit mines, and hated losing my ships to them. :)
Spent many hours plying this with my brother! Laying mines always made us crack up
Great game. I would typically play with just one ship and keep the other two in reserve away from the action and only pull them out if my main ship was sunk.
You never go out at two or three ships. Only one.
when i played this, we Never made an agreement to not sink the ships you weren't controlling
I don't remember making any agreement with my cousin who I used to play the game with. It was a great game on my all time favourite console.
This was a fun game. With the original release you could increase the range of the torpedo by holding down the crosshairs and moving the sub.
My favorite Intellivision game
A LOT of great memories. Thought I finally beat my father! Didn't know about the mine layer 🤣
Great game, should cover the mine layer ship. Was awesome.
Yep would lay mines in choke points
@@matarikitamaiti3493 Ya you could send in a minesweeper too to remove them. :) Great game
This and sub hunt were cool games, watching these videos i really miss my intellivision

I would use the heck out of the P2 boats because its quickness and ability to get through a microchoke point. Nice review and explanation. Thanks.
PT boats were OP...
Yes!

Remember those plastic overlays for putting over the controller?
I was 8 my cousin was 12 and he always kicked my butt. Still my gave game. Lock 'n' Chase and Nightstalker also epic.

Had this when I was a boy. My father never liked video games but he would play this with me. I could use the fast PT boat to sink all his ships!

An Amico remake that added a computer AI to play against would make that upcoming hardware hard to pass up.
