    Convicts, my first cichlids bred!
    Had Honduran red points and somewhere in my channel I have pictures of how they bred and coexisted.
    Had Dalmatians for a while.
    A few years back I noticed amongst the pink convicts that there are some with orange patterning that comes and goes, I still have one mature male who only shows his orange when another with the orange is in the tank with him, over the years I've only seen five of them, there's an old Axelrod book or someone like that who mentions the k o n g o variety which was an orange bodied pink convict, love your stuff, thank you

    Wow, a dwarf convict cichlid! That's mind blowing. It would be worth a study to determine why they choose to mature at such a small size, perhaps the need to hide in the tight spaces between rocks? I wonder what they found to eat in such a rocky habitat.

    • @belowwater
      @belowwater  ปีที่แล้ว +8

      they just breed early because there is not that much food, i am sure in normal conditions they will grow to the normal size.

    Thank you for this video that I find myself come back to watch from time to time. I bought my pair as "nigro" last year but recently I realized that they should be kanna (smaller size, no obvious head lump). Now I have more than 50 of them in one single tank as they are indeed successful parents. As you mentioned in the video, they look quite grey most of the time, that's why I am planning to add some livebearers to make the tank a bit less boring but still loosely correct in region. I don't think i can find the "wide forms" of molly or platy or guppy in my local fish stores and I indeed need some colors ! :)

    • @belowwater
      @belowwater  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Actually, you should be able to find _Alfaro cultratus_ from some breeders, that is the fish in the video and i think the ideal choice

    • @formercityboy9772
      @formercityboy9772 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@belowwater Yes I did notice that and checked. Never saw them before in my local store which is a big one. Neither are they available on several online shops/hobby platforms here. I guess they are less common here in Europe. I plan to buy several types of blue platy to breed out a decent group to put in with the kanna, to bring out the blue tone of the latter.

    Great share but as always with this type of video there is a concern that too many people might think it's a good idea to explore their favourite fish's natural habitat and ruin the last remaining wild breeding grounds.

    • @belowwater

      It's a popular weekend bathing spot for hundreds of locals, and none of these species are endangered. They are literally breeding to the entrance of the swimming area and boat rental.

      @@nrfishinman009 Hello Norm! My current colony is of 7 adults (one big female) and about 10 adolescence. I have them in a 75 gallon display tank with H. Multipsinosa and one female H. Nicaraguensis. As you can imagine, I haven't seen any fry since moving them into the display tank. When I was breeding them I had them in a 20 high with Val and Java Fern. I would pull about 6-10 fry every 30 days or so. I've only had them for under a year. I'm hoping some of the young ones turn into females. I gave a bunch of fry to Josh Cook, a fellow club member to also raise up.
