Cheapest one I would say is the tripod dolly for 30 bucks.
Useful not for all situation but for many. And it looks great. I just used it in my last one shot
You don't actually need that. Watch some older cinematographes shooting without stabilizers. If your camera is heavier it will have less shake and of practice walking softly and moving the camera steadily. A rail kit might be an option, some come with weights. See how smooth a 10 pound dumb bell moves. The downside is fatigue.

You also need a notebook to write down your film making ideas. This one is overlooked but it's a total game changer, and you can carry it anywhere, so it's a nice extra item to keep in mind

I would add that gaff tape is SUPER helpful so that people don't trip over cords (like I always did). Another great item which can be key especially if you're using a lot of lights is bringing one or two power strips on a shoot.

It's not impossible yes, but with a minimum wage in my country is eighter survive and eat or have nice things. Even if you're saving, it'd take a few years to buy it new and not stolen

Just starting to kick around doing a fun channel with my young son who loves TH-cam and this is very helpful. I've noticed, that even with our decent basic camera, and even cell phones, it's fairly easy to get good quality video, but it's the audio that is more difficult to capture with any up front clarity.

This is probably one of the best lists I’ve seen. It goes through what you’re actually going to need while being realistic. You will see tons of videos telling you all you need is a good story and equally as many suggesting u need a RED camera but this keeps it realistic. If you actually want to make money with film which is what filmmakers plan on doing then you’re gonna need these things eventually and I think this list is really good for that.

The editor in Davinci Resolve 14 is excellent, free, and you've got a ton of tools for colour grading. It's a bit of a resource hog, so you'll want a beefy computer.

D4 I didn’t know or think I could direct or shoot a movie. You help me so much with practical tips and knowledge that now I can see myself possibly doing it. And links in the description for the equipment, is a huge help. Look to seeing your movie on the big screen.
The other cool thing about hitfilm4 is it is a seamless transition into premiere pro when you are ready for that jump. At least I found it to be.

I am a new youtuber with a desire to make really good vlog style and movie-style videos and your comment about don't worry about the camera was exactly what I needed to hear. I have been spending almost a full week thinking about nothing but the camera that I am going to get. I have been a slave to this almost. Thank you. I think I will get a Panasonic g85 now with no regrets.
Sony Vegas is another great video editor to if you remember to disable the re sampling on videos. it will do just as good as Premiere unless you gonna need to other adobe products like after effects..

Hey, Darious! Great video as always, man. I wanted to point out that DaVinci Resolve is another great, free video editor with integrated color correction and (soon) sound editing. Alternatively, Avid recently released Media Composer First (free version), which I hear is very capable - it would be a great option for people hoping to learn industry standards in editing. Keep up the good work!
My friend and I are right at the beginning with short films. We have most of the stuff on this list (though many are low budget alternatives) except the sound recorder. There is a lot of pricey gear on this list of twelve things. We came to video through amateur photography and built up gear through used camera shops. I think going through photography first means you can save (very...slowly) and add gear that leads to filmmaking eventually. This means you can produce good work whilst learning light. We don't have a sound-recorder yet, nor lapel mics, because we have concentrated on everything that has dual use.
From my rate of savings I estimated it would take 5 years only to buy the camera.

Don't worry ;) just start with what you have right now (phone)! As soon as you can afford the most important items slowly start building your kit (used cam for ~300$, ect)

Buchanan Games sure the 16gb of ram is a bit of an exaggeration. You don’t neeeed 16gb of ram but unless you’re using something like Final Cut Pro it will make your editing experience a hell of a lot more bearable

I've made hundreds of self massage videos and helped MILLIONS of people using a $160 Canon Elph on a $20 mini tripod. If you look up "how to release gas" you'll find a VERY HELPFUL video I made a long time ago using a panasonic point and shoot. I still get thank you comments DAILY from that video. What's important in a video? Content = 75% Audio and video = $25% Therefore, spending shitloads of money on high end equipment and then having mediocre content will get you NOWHERE vs having GREAT content and mediocre equipment will take you MILES and MILES and MILES!
If you're filming with mirrorless or dslr I'd recommend getting a battery grip, it's shown but he didn't actually mention it

A great outro would be the one handed opening (in mid-air no less) and catching of that reflector, repeated three or four times in a loop at normal speed. That was a cool move. Subscribed to learn more film-making stuff. But would have done so anyway just because that move was pretty impressive. Lol.
Yo D4, is there any legitimacy to the claim that "it kind of doesn't matter what software you use, it just matters how you use it to tell the dang story?" I made a short film with iMovie and that software is garbage but the end product was alright. Great video btw! Dope as usual :D
Griff-griff! Some software work better than others but at the end of the day they're all tools. If you know how to use the tools, it doesn't matter.
I think of it this way.
You want to get from New York to Texas.
You can take a bike
Drive a car
Or go by plane
All options will accomplish the same thing. Get you from NY to Texas. Some options will leave you more exhausted and take longer though

As long as you're capable and creative with your tools, it doesn't matter what you use. Although most high-end software will make certain processes easier and simpler, and the tools are of much higher quality. Working with audio is practically the same; you can make a decent record in Garageband or Audacity, but you will be tearing your hair out along the way. Pro Tools is the industry standard digital audio workstation software and you can edit and mix without ever touching the mouse because the keyboard shortcuts are so in-depth and intuitive. I can get you similar results in both but it will take me 10 times longer to do it in low-end software, which is unacceptable in most creative industries.
+1 for the Tascam...I don't know what I'd do without it. People forget that camera VIDEO is HD but NOT THE AUDIO.

I've using sony vegas on 2GB with no issue or slowdown whatsoever. Furthermore, there were barely any computers with more than 4GB about 5 years back, that didn't prevent people from making shorts.

Photo editing takes up the CPU and ram, seems video editing is mainly GPU. I have an ASUS 970 turbo and it took me 40 minutes to put a noise reduction filter on 3 minutes of 720P video in sony vegas.

You actually do not need to know anything going into film school. Your first year is the basics, which is learning how to cut videos before film. Depending what you want to study and focus in. Film school depending on the school provides every resource such as from renting from them for free like arri and red cameras to small dslrs. These include audio gear and lighting which sometimes you would need insurance. For editing, my school has a whole floor for just video editing, color correcting, and film cutting at the bench. Another floor would include ADR and foley as well. So throughout film school, you would be all set. If it is s university with a mixture of other art students, use them as well like web designers for building and marketing as a producer and architecture people came in handy to build and give our production designers ideas or help for interior. Just branch out and make use of resources. Your first year is just the basics so learning some basic photography might be helpful. I graduated with my BFA in MPT focusing on editing and if you learn editing, you will see the world differently from a directors stand point understand shot compositions and the mood of the story and why. Remember that film school is for people who want to tell stories in any way possible. It is not really for commercials or vlogs and stuff. So go study the history of it like Lawrence of Arabia, Hitchcock films, Orson Welles Citizen Kane, Woody Allens films. This is just 1 of 5000 I can give information on because it is so much to explain that TH-cam cannot do it for you.
(Take a anthropology class to study human and cultures because it makes you see brighter things from how human behavior is if you plan to direct.) let me know if there is anything else that would help to understand.
Buying additional memory cards is a good idea, it's not fun to realize you've run out of available memory mid-shoot. But it's important to buy good quality cards that have a fast enough write speed. If the 'write' or 'buffer' speed is too slow for the size of the files you're shooting (I think 3 or 4 mins of 1980 x 1020 HD works out at about 1 GB) you may find your camera 'freezes' mid shoot, or drop frames, or suddenly cut out in the middle of a scene. It's also a good idea to occasionally 'wipe' the cards completely when you're done with the footage. Merely 'deleting' the files leaves them in situ to be written over, but sometimes for some reason best known to itself, the camera ignores some blocks where deleted files reside and doesn't ever write over them, treating them like 'occupied' space. This reduces the effective memory capacity of your card by however many GB of footage sits there invisibly on the card. So, for example, while you might think you have 32 GB on a 32 GB card, you actually only are able to access 25 GB of it. A complete shred of the files / overwrite with zeros and a format usually helps solve this problem.

I have 16GB Ram, i think i can playback 1080p with a lot effects, just not render heavy ones like motion blur or dof.
martinremixful YES. The speed also effects it as well.
If you are a heavy user of After Effects, then yes, absolutely worth it.
I have 64GB RAM. When I throw enough effects and layers at something it still lags a bit. It's not all about RAM. Working with limited RAM, you'll want an efficient work flow so that effects, transitions, anything that requires processing power and rendering are added as late as possible in the process. There are also ways of adding these in that allow for them to be turned on and off for smoother editing playback. Prudent use of Adjustment Layers is one example.

Nikon D3300 ideal for beginners , costs around 450 USD.
No! Never buy a Nikon for Video! Nikon creates great photos but not so good videos. Instead get yourself a Canon 550d, 600d or anything like that, or even your phone would work.
no no and no. for video get sony a6000 for start it's better than anything for money. since it's mirrorless old lenses are super easy to find and manuap focus with focus peaking is easy and there are zebras etc. iso performace is better than any dslr in that price range. only downside i can get off my mind now is poor battery life but there are 3rd party good battery's for cheap so that's it.
I used Nikon but switched to Canon 4ti as it has remote with focus and record buttons, and 24mm 2.8 lens for cheap. Powered Rode mic gives acceptable audio with Canon.
itslegendarytiger no way I use Nikon, started with a d3200 and now d7100, the sensor on Nikon dslrs are amazing, shooting on flat picture control, you'll get higher dynamic range and more details. Canon's colour science are good for photos, but ain't good for videos, you're gonna have to spend lots of time colour correcting your footage, while on Nikon, you could simply put luts on it. Really, if you're more into image quality (colour, details, dynamic range), go with Nikon. But canon's AF system, literally unbeatable.
I have the Nikon D3200. It is amazing for stills and video. But DSLRs are not made for shooting films. They are engineered to not work as movie cameras by the specs they must follow to call the product a DSLR. They all have max shooting times where they will turn off automatically. If you want to go shoot film, then start with a BlackMagic cinema camera.

I've used a Audio-Technica ATR3350 Omnidirectional Condenser Lavalier Microphone for interviews and had some success. If you can deal with wired and omnidirectional, It's a good starter mic for about $30.

Hey D4darious. I'm just starting out and my audio set up is an h2n connected to a rode video mic pro along a boom pole. Do you think I could get decent audio quality with this? And also for anyone looking for a camera, don't buy a Nikon d5200 because you can't shoot using a flat profile without an ugly horizontal grain pattern that is nearly impossible to get rid of in post.
Of course! You will get very good audio quality with zoom recorders and rode microphones. Don't forget about audio postproduction - very important but often forgotten. Inform me when you will upload your first film. ✌

Chances are if you have a more modern iphone, like the 8 and above (which can shoot up to 4k) you are in luck. As for audio, there are clip on mics (or lavalier mics) that you can use that have great sound. Some awesome ones are 20 dollars. You can buy lower end filters on Amazon and you can either pirate or get free trials, or imovie (if you have a mac/iphone) to edit. There are also very good apps for people who edit on the phone that retail for 20 and less. It's not about buying professional equipment, its about working equipment professionally. However, most professionals use equipment similar to the stuff mentioned in the video, so getting your feet wet is always nice so you can familiarize yourself.

MSG I’ve gone through all the Sony alpha models (a6000,a6300,a6500) and currently I own the a6500. My advice to you would be to start with the a6000 and upgrade it as soon as you start to get more serious about it. There are many things to learn, if you buy the most expensive model without knowledge, it’s like spending money for something you won’t take advantage from.

Can a 11.9 GB of RAM work?
I am currently using only 8gig of ram. It can be a bit slow in the work flow, pauses, rendering etc, but, it does work. More ram is better, but you are using the basement to get the work done.

It will depend on your software. Check the minimum specs for whatever editing software you will be using. Andrew and BakrJr are likely right though. I should work fine but may lag a bit depending on the resolution of you project, size of your files, length of the project, etc. It's not all about RAM though. GPU and CPU are very important also for smooth playback. The software editor manufacturer's recommended minimum specs are a good place to start.
