    This might be the best Neutron tutorial on youtube. Nice job, clear presentation, interesting features I haven't seen elsewhere. Thanks
    Another tip I found is creating a Sub-oscillator by sending Osc 1 or 2 to Env Gate 1 or 2 which triggers the Envelope at the osc rate. Then by changing the env length it changes the octave of the sub oscillator.
    Routing example is: Osc 2 -> E.Gate 2; Env 2 -> VCF.
    You can also combine this with Osc 2 original source buy summing Osc Mix with Env 2 before routing to VCF.

      Yes I found that tip elsewhere too but I find it a bit inconsistent across the frequency spectrum so I decided not to include. Plus it wasn't something I'd found either so I thought I'd let the original video keep the praise for it

    Extra: the distortion based LFO can be slowed a bit further by connecting overdrive to mult in, mult 1 to slew in, slew out to overdrive in and turning up the slew control. The LFO will lose depth the higher the slew is turned up though

    Waveshaping?
    Run an oscillator thrugh one of the sums.
    ....but send an envelope, or other cv to the second sum input.
    As the audio signal is offset by dc one half of it will clip.
    Voltage controlled distortion.

    A useful build for 6:45 - the LFO actually has its own built in attenuator. Hold Key Sync to enter the LFO menu and then press and hold Osc 1 range. You’ll see the LFO shape lights ‘decrease’ (hold osc 2 to increase the LFO strength)

      @@ChrisLodyMusic I notice! I'm a music production instructor at the Academy of Art in SF, but I have the hardest time talking to/looking at a camera. So many of my students want videos though so I have to learn! Any tips?

    • @ChrisLodyMusic
      @ChrisLodyMusic 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I still struggle to be honest. It's one of the most challenging things I've had to learn in recent times because just sat in a room talking to a camera feels super unnatural to me. You might have inspired me to make a video how to about this but for now here's a few random thoughts. For one thing it gets easier the more you do it so don't be afraid of failure to begin with. Also it's difficult to not strive for perfection for me and compare myself to others on TH-cam, but successful TH-camrs who look really slick have had a lot of practice and have probably invested lots in good recording equipment so when you start that's not what to aim for. Finding a private place to record is a must I'd say and don't be afraid to edit the hell out of things. I tend to record in short bursts, then add my footage to computer, edit out all the times I've messed up what I was trying to demonstrate and continue as it gives me a bit of headspace between filming. Also I don't write a script as I don't find it easy to follow that while trying to describe technical information. Do write out a rough guide to follow for sections if it's a complicated video though. Generally speaking too sound quality is more important than video quality, but for my tutorials I like good sound overall and a decent clear shot of my gear. One of the best ways to get good video is by using lots of light, generally normal household lighting looks much darker then you'd think when you're filming your face. There's a fair bit to unpack there but I hope it helps 😄

    • @jeffreyjbyron
      @jeffreyjbyron 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ChrisLodyMusic This is amazing thank you! In the past I've had to avoid editing too much because I can become obsessive and don't know when to stop. Perfectionism is just insecurity, I know this, and I don't even really care what people thin of me. Just have high expectations. Same reason I have tons of music no one has every heard. Ha ha *nervous laugh*

    • @ChrisLodyMusic
      @ChrisLodyMusic 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tell me - did you come up with these through random experimentation? Do you have other semimodulars?
      One last thing - when feeding the unit back into itself, ie the overdrive out into the overdrive in, or the filter out into the filter in, is there any chance of damaging it? Or only damaging my ears with the bonkers sounds? 😄

    • @ChrisLodyMusic
      @ChrisLodyMusic 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Like a lot of the sound design I do it's 50\50 knowledge and experimentation. I know enough about electronics to be able to build oscillators etc so that gives me ideas, then it's just a case of trying certain things to see how the specific hardware reacts. You don't need to worry about damaging any of the internal components as they all use the same voltage ranges so no harm can be done, even when plugging into other eurorack spec gear like modular and semi modular. Oscillators, filters and a lot of other synth components are built using feedback paths actually

    Thanks for some very useful tips. I had been looking for a way to fix the pitch of one of the oscillators but couldn't find a way to do it until now. BTW I think the Amplitude modulation patch could actually be considered ring modulation as it goes through zero. Through zero amplitude modulation is effectively the same thing as ring modulation. An extension of this feature is to have both oscillators ring modulated against the LFO by patching the output of osc 1&2 into attn1 and LFO into attn 1 cv input or vice versa and blend between them. Sure you know this already but maybe someone will find it useful.

    • @ChrisLodyMusic

    Try putting the Osc Mix through the Overdrive and then into the VCF. You'll then have to patch the VCF output into the VCA. This distorts the oscillators before the filter - a different and useful sound

    By happenstance I've been shopping around for a used Neutron, so this is a very timely demo. Seems like a reasonable dip into the modular environment, I assume it will play well with my SQ-01, and other semi-modular gizmos. When it comes to generating random pitch and modulation I find sample and hold to be particularly useful, but the method you used here was interesting. Thanks for the always informative vids!

    • @ChrisLodyMusic
      @ChrisLodyMusic 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you. Yes it will work with the Korg SQ1, you can use the gate and CV outputs on it to trigger the envelopes and send CV to the oscillators. Personally I'm on the verge of building a eurorack modular after using a friends but the Neutron is a great in-between step and can be removed from it's case and added to a eurorack system too.

      @@ChrisLodyMusic Just to clarify, can you get true polyphony via the two oscillators for separately sequenced tracks when using the two sets of pitch and gate inputs on the Neutron? I have a Keystep Pro, which has four sets of pitch/gate/mod outputs, and can sequence four tracks. I am considering getting a Neutron. It seems as if it should work, and I think you confirmed that above, but before I read your comment I was put off by this from page 5 of the Neutron's manual: "While it is largely a monophonic instrument (one note at a time) the Poly Chain
      function lets you combine multiple Neutron synthesizers for polyphonic sounds."

    • @ChrisLodyMusic

    Have you tried using the slew limiter as an envelope follower? I was wondering if that circuit works similar to Maths’ slew limiter circuit.

    • @ChrisLodyMusic
      @ChrisLodyMusic ปีที่แล้ว

      It wouldn't work as an envelope follower in the sense of being able to send audio into it and get a volume profile out because audio swings above and below 0v. The output of the slew would just hang around the centre unless it was rectified somehow so the audio would only produce positive voltages before it hit the slew circuit

    I'm trying to sync the lfo inside the DAW, but it can't find a way to start the lfo phase from the exact movement I need, I know that keysync kinda does that, but it also retriggers every time you press a new note.

    I’ve just picked up a Neutron second hand. I’m using an Arturia Keystep to control it over MIDI, and first thing I was struck by was how quiet it is. When I tried to follow along with this vid, I checked I had exactly the same patch (OSC2 as 2nd LFO) and the sound is so low!?
    I’ve also used Gate & Pitch out on the Keystep, to E.Gate 1 & Osc 1+2 respectively, and this is the same, although the pitch is higher, not sure if this bypasses the octave setting for the Oscillators?
    …anyways, if I run out from the phones Jack instead it’s as you’d expect, sounds really nice, but I now have to use the phones volume knob on the back of the unit as the volume out for phones isn’t controlled by the usual knob.
    Am I doing something daft?
    (I reset the Neutron as mentioned in the start of this vid, just in case but it made no difference). Maybe the guy I bought it off has had it out of the case, and he’s knocked a variable resistor or something? 😕

      One thing to check which has confused me in the past (I actually thought it was broken once!) is that with the default routing there are two volume controls, the one by the midi connection at the top right then also a level control on the overdrive section. Is it that?

    I was close to getting this but have yet to see it do anything very interesting other that what synths have done for 40 years. There was a recent article in Attack Magazine asking if Synths have peaked, is there anything new. Their conclusion was no, not really, and that's what I'm seeing too. At this point it's really up to the user to have good skills and especially imagination.

    • @ChrisLodyMusic
      @ChrisLodyMusic ปีที่แล้ว

      I've been pondering this since your message. I agree that despite how good I think the Neutron is (and it is very good) it's certainly not breaking any new ground in terms of innovation. I think that's true of almost all of Behringer's products actually. But I do not believe that synths have peaked. You only have to look at something like the Arturia MicroFreak or MiniFreak with their multi algorithmic setup and how much untapped power they have to realise there is an awful lot that has yet to explored. Even if you were to speculate that there are no new original synthesis methods yet to be discovered, if you were to put this in the perspective of something like visual art it's like colours and techniques have been created in recent years that very few people have fully taken advantage of. Imagine if the colour purple was new and not many paintings actually used it! Even types of synthesis like FM that have been around for a long time are now being given better and better user interfaces and routing possibilities that open up more and more ways for users to play expressively. Personally I think the world of music in general is such a vast thing I will expire long before I'm happy I've learned enough 😄
