      Looking at my planting schedule Steve, I planted them in a polystyrene box in April, but because of the summer heat we've had here I really didn't want to plant out into the beds, so managed to keep them somewhat alive until cooler weather arrived and managed to save about 20, touch wood they seem to be coming back to life now they're in the bed..

    I’ve had a polytunel for 10 years and this is my first time planting it for the winter... I’ve usually run out of steam by September! Covid and staying home has it’s benefits.
    Last year a carrot went to seed so I left it and collected the seeds this year, so you think they will grow? I haven’t heard of many people saving carrot seeds! 🧐
    Great detail and such well laid out polytunels. Mine has sunk a bit, we are going to try and raise the frame using heavy duty jacks. I thought I was still growing. 🤣 But the cover isn’t taught anymore so holding too much condensation. Fingers crossed it works. 😃

    • @GreenSideUp
      @GreenSideUp  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      One of my mantras is to "Just try it", and if I did not already have carrots in the ground I would sow them today. It is quite late in the year but everything is worth a go to further your own experience. Good luck with the Polytunnel adjustments, do let me know how that goes...Steve...👍

    I love the get them in and try it attitude. I started growing vegetables during the spring during lockdown, so I am now looking at what I can grow over winter to keep me entertained. I will try the carrots and garlic, and visit the local garden centre to see if there are any other small plants I can add, such as onions. I have ordered some polycarbonate so I can make a roof to create a small cold frame with some raised bed sides I have.

    • @GreenSideUp
      @GreenSideUp  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have not heard of that one before and I am not too sure about it either. MY understanding is that you plant a garlic clove, as it it grows it grows into a "round", then it needs a frost to help split that into cloves...Steve...👍

    • @paulartsuk
      @paulartsuk 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Green Side Up , I’ve just looked it up, I think it was the fridge rather than freezer, a process called vernalisation where the cold temperature simulates winter

    • @GreenSideUp
      @GreenSideUp  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@paulartsuk yeah I use that process for some of my seeds, such as verbena b and lark spur. I must look it up myself for garlic because I would think garlic sellers would supply it pre penalised...Steve...😎

    Great video Steve..an inspiration to me to try and grow something through the colder months. Have been out and sown some Beetroot this morning...any helpful tips? Tried last 3 years and get plenty of leaves but nothing underneath. But determined to keep trying but can’t understand what am doing wrong. Your Pak Choi cabbage..have heard of it but never tried it and mustards again never tried. Will they grow big and would couple go in a small container as not too much room left. I haven’t an allotment just a back yard with some container beds my hubby made for me and a few smaller bucket size pots. Thanks for the enthusiasm you’ve given me to grow more. I dread autumn/winter and feel lost but now I can have something to look forward to for longer 🤗

    Question mate, I planted my garlic in my greenhouse, if I keep my greenhouse above freezing so around 40 fahrenheit or 4-5 celsius all winter long, will they bulb up? They've already been in my fridge for 1 month before I planted them, they are about 6 inches high now

    • @GreenSideUp
      @GreenSideUp  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is something I have heard a lot over the years, but I have never tried for myself, so I do not know if it is true or an urban myth. My thought process works like this on the subject, if vernalisation worked for Garlic, then they would do this to all garlic pre sale, to guarantee cloves splitting for their customers. I have grown garlic in a polytunnel the year before last but temps did get to below freezing so they split. I now only plant garlic in the spring, the only allium I overwinter is elephant garlic and that is outside...Steve...👍
