What no mention of spears? You can often outright kill weak monsters by playing a card with piercing (works even with off hand cards) and if you dont kill it then you get placed in front of said card allowing you the first strike. Not to mention you can make a lot of good spears from only a few high grade materials
Requires lots of manpower to do correctly but yes, killing something outright is nice, such as a boss enemy. There really is great spears out there to, I just prefer spamming high shields and saving hammer/first action combo for last play. Works with spears to, just make sure you play spears first, then high shield.

These tips aren't that good. They might take you to 250% difficulty for consistent wins but gathering is the least efficient method of progress at True God level. You should really qualify that these tips are for beginners.

Equip elves with poison two handed axes. It turns axes effectively into spears by changing the damage type to piercing.
I noticed that one of the best ways to crank out research points is to destroy a building and rebuild it now and then.

I find Spears so good that I sometimes nerf myself by not allowing myself to craft spears.
