Sanji spend the rest of that day, all nigth calling for that ship and they just leave the zone for i think was 5 more days until they come back and both Sanji and Zeff where totally bones and bearly alive... always seems odd to me they dint show that.
Usually in shonen most fans prefer secondary characters to the MC. It's normal for people to root for the "cool" characters, rather than the MC, which is usually more nice and goofy. In fact, Luffy is one of the most beloved MCs in all shonens, because he breaks a bit the mold of the usual super nice, good guy MC as he is very quirky, selfish and silly.
In the manga he cut that foot off on the atoll to eat it, but was censored in the anime cause Oda's editors thought it was "too dark for a kids show"
