Such a joy to see this (even though the result was a huge disappointment!) as this was the first ever 1st team game I attended at The Boleyn Ground... went with my Grandad (a long time season ticket holder) and sat up in the Old West Stand, B Block row E..... I sat in my Dad's seat that day. He couldn't make the game as he was opening the bowling for either The Old Blues or East Saxons.... I remember it was a really hot summer afternoon and I will never forget the glorious sight of those tall floodlight pylons coming into view for the first time as we made our way along Green Street.

First game of the season proper & they get slow handclaped! I enjoyed it nonetheless, seeing tackles & grass & earth.

Baggies chairman major reynolds keys, got fed up with cup finals and a mid table team, he wanted us ( WBA) To win the league, So we brought in Howe, who had won the league at Arsenal.

West Brom Tony Brown scored 28 previous season as top scorer in Div 1, yet they nearly got relegated! West Brom were always a great watch. I was stationed in Worcester & went to a few WBA home matches. The ground was close to the M5 so easy access.

Listening to Don Howe I can detect a Brummie accent?

You won’t ever see the likes of them anymore fella. The day they sold Upton Park was the end of a fabulous club. I’m a baggies fan and have been to Upton Park quite a few times back in the day and it was a very timid ground to go to. It was a proper football ground. Good luck for the season fella and thanks for the memories.

My brothers, who are all much younger than me, said it would be a good deal, because we could buy better players, if we sold the ground. To me it was akin to selling your soul. West Ham has never been the same to me after that. Lost all interest with them. The ground was the club, all that history thrown away, gone forever.

Was that the season W.B.A. started like a steam train but were, uncharacteristically, kicking s**t out of everyone and ended up with most of their first team suspended? I think they may even have been relegated. Albion were always a favourite of mine (I'm a Monkey-Hanger, so I have to have some other team that gives me some pleasure), the Baggies of the mid to late 70's were great entertainers.

Every day I switch my phone on there's another early 70s footy goodie. Keep 'em comin'. I'm 70 this year, the allotted 3 score & 10, so I need to watch them all before it's too late!

Jim Cumbes was one of those cricketer/footballers types - played for Worcsstershire I think.

Yes he did, played for WCCC as..yup, wicketkeeper! He was quite good with the bat also. They had another player who played for Lincoln City, plus Ian Botham who played for Scunthorpe Utd for a few matches. Cumbes was the standout & come Aug Sept he would have been really busy trying to do both roles.

Love it. Not like now, when every other player is foreign or dark skinned.

such an odd thing, the sense of fairness that must've been cultural in its origins, that constantly calls a foul for little nudges of positioning when a ball is being contested in the air (that example with Clyde Best at 15:55 or so) versus no to hardly any fouls called for people sliding in from all angles under the guise of "tackling". The latter can really hurt a person, remember. It took decades for the fallacy of this concept to finally be, um, tackled.

Brian Moore mentioned the wind, but I wonder what he would have thought if he'd watched the game at Roker Park that day, when the combination of a bitterly cold easterly wind and driving rain resulted in Sunderland's lowest ever attendance for an opening home fixture - less than 9000. One thing is for sure, he would have been soaked to the skin no matter where in the ground he was.

I went to Roker Park in the 70s it was bloody freezing up there though we did get a draw⚒

lol. Only full on GBH was enough for a yellow card in the 70s. Red cards were so rare you'd have to basically shoot someone for the referee to take notice. How the pendulum has swung.

I’ve watched about 12 of these of these now with West Ham and we we’ve won one but I remember the camera’s in 70’s were like the kiss of death at Upton Park!
