    My understanding is that Blaidd was given to the Ranni by the Two Fingers as her Shadow for a reason- he was a ticking time bomb if she went against the Greater Will (notice one of the assassins from the Two Fingers you fight looked just like Blaidd), iji knew this and thats why he imprisoned him and why if you find Blaidd's prison before he escapes he is so confused about why he was imprisoned and if you ask Iji why he is imprisoned he says that he will become dangerous. Blaidd didn't know himself what was happening to him.

    • @eurogamer
      @eurogamer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      That's so interesting, I didn't consider that. The shade (baleful shadow) you fight does take on the appearance of Blaidd, and I assumed that was because the two fingers wanted to make that fight a taunt/as painful as they could for Ranni to witness through the doll, as she does appear to have affection for Blaidd. The shadows in general are given to empyreans to protect them but too also kill them if they go against the greater will.Its the same for Maliketh.

      @@eurogamer I think the Bladid assassin look a like was probably foreshadowing. it would also help explain why Iji felt so horrible for imprisoning him if you go to talk with him after his Bladid's death. Because Bladid wasn't really to blame for his actions.

    • @beckstheimpatient4135
      @beckstheimpatient4135 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      And considering Marika herself had a shadow in Maliketh... The Will seems to bind watchers to all their tools to make sure they keep in step.

      @@beckstheimpatient4135 The Greater Will prefers all individuals stay in line, like runes on a page or links in a chain. Everything has to be ordered, proper and predestined.
      One could argue that Ranni's hand's off approach is no better. Look at the mess that Raya Lucaria and the Knights of the Cuckoo have turned into, while Ranni is busy with her ages long plot to murder the gods and topple their thrones.
      There are at least three rebel factions running rampant through the halls of their school. The citizens that haven't been mind wiped, worked to death, abducted by her brother Rykard's crazy snake powered robots, turned into diggers or eaten by zombies, have been killed by rebel soldiers or invaders.

    I feel like you missed Iji's dialogue which explains exactly why Blaidd went mad
    Since Blaidd was given to Ranni by the Two Fingers he was basically programmed to always serve them, helping Ranni betray them goes against his very being, but he loved Ranni way too much to ever betray her for the Two Fingers the conflict in him drives him mad, as the Two Fingers are trying to force him to stop Ranni, Iji imprisons Blaidd in the evergaol fearing he'd kill Ranni if she killed the Two Fingers
    When he learns Blaidd dies refusing to kill Ranni he expresses regret, saying he should have never doubted Blaidd's loyalty to Ranni and that he'll join him soon then you find Iji dead soon after

    Interesting video! Ranni is such a fascinating character
    There are some things that are incorrect here though:
    - Godwyn is the son of marika and Godfrey and not Radagon's son.
    - Blaidd isn't spiteful or envious - he is just programmed to snap and kill ranni if she is ever to betray the two fingers (you can even hear him talking to himself and fighting "the voices" when you approach him from behind when he's waiting in front of ranni's tower).
    - The greater will/2 fingers literally "gave" blaidd to her - He is like double-edged sword- there to protect ranni at all costs but should she ultimately turn against TGW/The two fingers he is forced to kill her/turn against her instead.
    - And why should she order to have Iji killed when Iji even has a special item that helps him not being affected by TGW/the two fingers, she even tells us to tell Iji and Blaidd that she loves them and he is literally the one to lock up Blaidd as he knows exactly what will happen to him

    • @yrazu05
      @yrazu05 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Another correction to her video can include how Queen Marika herself was also responsible for Godwyn's death, as she also plotted with the Black Knives.
      I'm sure she worked with Ranni or maybe Ranni used this information to work in the shadows, but she wasn't the only one plotting against the Greater Will.

    • @Terminalsanity
      @Terminalsanity 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@yrazu05 I don't think Marika was in on the Black knives plot I think the unnamed conspirator the whole time was the Greater Will punishing Marika for taking out their chosen agent of Destined death the Gloam eye-ed queen and sealing destined death. Marika was not the first vessel of the elden ring I don't think the Greater will ever planned on her being the last.
      I also think the Greater will looped Ranni in on the plot by telling her their intended target was Radhan not Godwyn as if Radhan had already frozen the stars at that point Ranni would have needed to take him out and doing so while casting aside her empyrean flesh would been taking out 2 birds with one stone but she was tricked and her ambitions and fate were suspended indefinitely so in truth the plot was 2 birds and one stone for the greater will: Humble/punish Marika while neutralizing Ranni(also explains why Ranni was a bit cagey when asked about the matter she wasn't ashamed of what she had tried to do but was still pissed off she'd been tricked and used). Though Marika ultimately shattering the Elden Ring was a setback they already had even a backdoor solution for that in the form of the tarnished in place
      If the Black knives were in fact agents of the greater will the whole time it more tightly explains why they moved to take out Blaidd and Iji after Ranni slew the 2 fingers assigned to her. If Marika's plan by engaging in the plot to assassinate Godwyn was ultimately to screw over the Greater will why try and take out Ranni and her servants out at that point who were planning to do the same thing?

    Wasn't Godwyn the Golden the son of Queen Marika and Godfrey, the first Elden Lord, and not QM + Radagon? Godwyn's other (full) siblings were the cursed twins Mohg & Morgott. His half-siblings were Radagon and Rennala's children - Radahn, Rykard, and Ranni; as well as the other cursed twins from the Queen Marika and Radagon line Miquella and Malenia. There's a general consistency to the naming too. Godfrey's son Godwyn begins with a G (interestingly Mohg's & Morgott's begin with their mother's initials). Radagon and Rennala's children all beginning with the letter R. Queen Marika's children with Radagon as King Consort begin with her initial "M" but that could be because of the 'special' relationship that QM and Radagon have.

    Godwyn is the first born of the golden lineage, Godfrey and Marika. Radagon was a god prior to his marriage to Marika as they are the same being. Rykard and Ranni seem to have some good relations as Rykard was awarded a shard of Maliketh's sword for his part in the plot. Rykard was also planning to fight Maliketh seemingly to protect Ranni if Maliketh uncovered the plot.

    I don't remember where I saw it (in-game or other video?), but I think the reason Blaidd went crazy was because he was still bound by the two fingers, having been created by them for Ranni. Because he betrayed them, they tried to force him to turn on Ranni. That raises the question, then... why did it take so long for them to do anything?
    Also, hadn't seen half that stuff about the Godskin acolytes. Can't wait to see more about them.

      Seems they thought they had it under control. They had Blaidd in place, and several other wolves (secret Black Knives) stationed outside of her Rise. They had kept Ranni in check, unable to even see the Fingers, until you make it possible.
      There's going to be some great interpretations for Ranni's story. Hopefully people don't just jump on a Vaati video as a consensus, because I think there's a fair bit of room for varying stories supported by the context.

    • @danielkubicek1323
      @danielkubicek1323 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@channarosenblatt8197 I can see that conclusion, but there has been a mistranslation of Ranni's dialouge from the original Japanese. There is a video somewhere that explains it better, but basically Ranni isn't saying that she intends to have these emotions removed, but more that the order she creates will not demand subjection of these or any other emotion. It will be a distant thing that makes no demands of humanity, leaving humanity without any guidance or "light". The long dark lonely road is ment to be sort of a Neizchie-like (don't quote me on the spelling) path where there is no greater power telling or "guiding" you on what to do, but only your will and determination to carry you.
      That being said, there is venom in her actions for sure,and killing Godwin in such a vicious manner was ment to hurt Marika/Radagon to both settle the score and provoke the most dramatic reaction, but it was also necessary so that the rune of death didn't whole annihilate her soul when she killed her body (half was used on him, half on her). Vicious, yup, but smart tatics.
      Overall her path is about freeing humanity from the mistakes of Marika's rule and enslavement by higher powers who use their souls like batteries and shepherd them like cattle. I can see the appeal honestly, but then again I can also see how her methods can be seen as a bridge too far.

    Rennala is not Ranni's mother, Ranni is an empyrian, which is defined in the game text as the child of a single God, the only two others being Malenia and Miquella. It's likely that Radagon used the Greater Rune of Rebirth to somehow create Ranni alone. It's also possible that Marika is her mother. But Rennala certainly is not.

    I personally don't think Rannie will send black knives assassin against her only allies. I believe the assassins come after her allies AFTER you pick up the half Rune of Destined Death. Not sure why they would go after Rannie's allies after picking it up but you do encounter an assassin later yourself in the Capital City right before Marika's bedchamber waiting for you.
    Also, Blaidd did not act out of jealousy or envy against the player. Upon closer inspection of the surrounding area, there are corpses of black knives assassins. If anything, it was the intense fight he had with the assassins while trying to resist the Two Fingers influence which would probablyexplainwhy you find him at the foot of Rannie's Rise tower. Another TH-camr who has done many videos on Souls game's lore had theorized that Blaidd was a sleeper agent of the Two Fingers meant to eliminate Rannie which would explain him as a shaded assassin you fight underground.

    • @eurogamer
      @eurogamer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can see that theory. Personally I think the shaded assassin/baleful shadow was meant to imitate Blaidd to try and disturb Ranni or send a message, rather than him literally being the baleful shadow himself. It makes more sense in my mind that Blaidd went mad from being severed from Ranni when she abandoned her doll body, as he was created to be her shadowbound vassal and was thus connected to her in a spiritual manner, and being without her might have pushed him off the edge.
      With the black knives assassins, a theory I've read since making the video is that they turned on Ranni for something she did that angered them (I can't quite remember what it was atm) and they took it out on her allies after she had left her doll body. Zoe

    I just realized that part of the symbolism of the Two Fingers as enforcers of the Greater Will, gods like Marika and her offspring and even the Tarnished means that ALL OF THEM are just finger-puppets to the Greater Will.
    No wonder Ranni hated them. A demigod reduced to a mere finger puppet of some inscrutable outer being.

    Firmly disagree that Ranni sent the Black Knife assassins at the end of her questline.
    I think the lore goes even deeper, at the time of her ascension, the Knives tried to take their revenge, with Blaidd proving the last of his loyalty by protecting Ranni's Rise from this last invasion. While his mind may have been taken from him, his heart, his loyalty remained true and to his end, he protected his mistress.

      Well, we do know quite a bit. Ranni planned a coup, hired the most brutal assassins in the land, had her half-brother murdered, became ruler over life and death for eternity, and will live with you "forever on a path of darkness and cold" where there are "no feelings, no emotions, no warmth". She left the Lands Between forever cursed, rotten, or both, causing destruction and an end to hope and love. In other words, what you describe as the best ending.

    • @XFry333X
      @XFry333X 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@channarosenblatt8197 You understand the cause but have not fully realized effect. By her taking her order to the moon and away from the Lands Between, she has created separation between the God's will and the people. A separation which is needed because they world they've lived in now, one where gods walk among them, wasn't a good or pleasant one. Look at all the demigods that remained and how awful the world became under their rule and under the will of the Two Fingers. "darkness and cold" is true in that their future is uncertain. But it is uncertain because they no longer have a greater will to guide them and must find meaning and creation for themselves. The land can continue to rot, see destruction and death, or the people can see a new age forged by their freed wills. There is hope in this ending because it's the only ending that gives the living agency to decide the future for themselves, unlike the rest which either burn everything to the ground, plunge deeper into a fetish or retain the status quo.

    Ranni's mentor is called Renna and Godwyn is the child of Marika & Godfrey, not Marika & Radagon.
    Also I think its highly unlikely that Ranni is the Gloam-Eyed Queen, she is somewhat allied with the unnamed god of the darkmoon, and is firmly based in intelligent based sorcery, the godskins and followers of the black flame use faith based magic and are firmly situated in death. Of course, this is just my opinion.

      @@eurogamer it isn’t directly stated but heavily hinted at by FS. When you first meet Ranni she introduces herself as Renna, there’s also some cool dialogue if you decide to not tell her you own torrent where she commends you for lying and being suspicious, reinforcing the fact that Ranni is also suspicious of us, so decides to use the name of the body she is now inhabiting. Ranni also states that we won’t meet again, so there is little need for her to disclose her true name.
      Also the bigger clue is that the snow witch’s attire is found a top of Renna’s Rise once we get access to it.

    I don’t think Ranni sent the Black Knives to kill Iji, Seluvis and Blaidd. The Black Knives are confirmed in-game to be Nox, and Ranni is no longer friendly with the Nox by the time of the events of the game. I think she betrayed the Nox after conspiring with them to kill Godwyn. The Nox ended up taking all of the blame for the assassination, possibly leading to them being banished underground, while Ranni’s involvement remained largely a mystery. She imprisoned Alecto at her estate to tie up loose ends. I don’t think the Nox ever forgave her for this, which is why they send assassins, including one disguised as Blaidd (hence his headpiece being found near Seluvis).
