Hello Patrizia! Thanks so much for your lovely comment and your question. "I'm getting on in years." or "She is getting on in years." is a correct phrase. And, yes, it means "getting older." In English I think we would use this to describe a person, or maybe a pet, but *not* an object (like an old TV or car). Merry Christmas to you too! We hope to see you in 2024!

Hi guys. Here I am again with a litte question; just out of curiosity. Kat, when you said your were getting older, you said "Leslie", but your talking to Mark. And if I'm not being nosy, the other day you said something about going back to America. Are you not living there right now? Still in Korea? Bye, love you both. Looove this channel. 💋
Thanks so much! We're really glad you like our videos! About the phrase "leslie" - I looked into our notes and actually the subtitles are wrong 🤐 It was supposed to be "Mostly", but our mics didn't catch it properly and then the software didn't transcribe it correctly as a result (We have new fancy microphones now, so this happens much less often!) Good catch as well! We're actually both living in Mexico at the moment, but we visit home often!
Glad you did the last part😂 I was like what am I doing here it's all about alcohol😂 As a muslim, I don't fancy alcoholic drinks, I'll just stick to a lemonade or go for a cup of coffee 😊
We're glad you watched until the end, and great sentence! 💪We know that there are many other things to do with friends that don't involve alcohol, and now you know exactly what to say in English :)

I’d always wondered the difference between meet and meet up…now I know the slight difference between the two ..your facial expression, your body language all of this conveys meaning so well! I just have one question and it’s for Kate: you said, I still have a soft spot for dive bars” a spot here is a “place”, right ? But what does it mean to say you have “a SOFT spot” for something ?
A soft spot is like a special place in my heart maybe I have had a good experience with it in the past or I like something even if it isn’t normally likable. So I have a soft spot for big boy cats or bad rock videos from the 90s😂
@@highlevellistening Thank you so much for such a quick response !😲👏👏👏 Not every TH-camr takes the time to get back to comments and questions …I got it now and I’ve just learned something new again ! I really like your content. For the next episode, could you talk about the topic of making small talk at school or any random place? Every English learner would like to know how to make small talk with strangers or new friends since we come from different cultures.
Im not drinking much lately to stay healthier but sometimes I feel like having a Ramazotti or a Mocktail. Thanks guys for all these amazing lessons. Regards from Chile❤
Sounds like a good plan! Mocktails are still really tasty and other think you are drinking alcohol so they won't say anything! 😅 Thanks so much for your lovely message!
Hi Kat an Mark, Thanks for your lovely channel and all these lessons. One question please : Do you speak in your usual speed ? Just because when i try to watch TV or movies, it sounds like "what are they talking about", it's too fast for me, but i understand you quite well and thank you very much. I have the same problems while speaking at work with colleagues from US or UK in some Teams meetings, they talk very fast (for me) sometimes. I think most people say the same things about speed. So What is your advice about that ? But anyway thank you, i hope to level up my english with you.
Hi! That's a very good question and definitely a common issue for English learners. I (Mark) can explain and give you some helpful videos and tips here. First of all, we are experienced English teachers, and after so many years and classes, we can quite naturally "grade" our speaking speed to help non-native students. This speed makes sure we speak clearly so that students can hear almost every word, but it's not so slow that it's unnatural or strange. However, in movies, songs, conversations or times when people aren't "presenting" themselves and need to speak clearly to a large group, people speak faster - then the words start to blend together - then it becomes more difficult to hear. Especially if you have a person who repeats the same phrases every day at their job (like a waiter saying: "Hi, what can I get you?" or in a Teams call: "Can everyone see my screen?") - they also start to say phrases faster and faster and faster until it becomes a big blur. The best way to study this is to avoid long movie scenes, and focus on short phrases spoken very quickly. If you listen over and over and over you will slowly start to hear the individual words of the phrases, and it will become easier to remember and repeat. I actually really like this guy's videos because they are funny, short, and a great challenge to see if you can keep up with the speed. I think most native speakers can understand him on the first listen, see if you can catch what's he's saying: www.tiktok.com/@sullyfinlay/video/7325198138027887915?q=sullyfinlay&t=1706544235053 Oh yes, there's also a really cool website where you can watch very short clips of movies where they say specific phrases: www.playphrase.me/#/search - I recommend finding a phrase and watching the clips several times, you will start to hear the words more clearly each time. Hope some of that helps!
Thanks@@highlevellistening(Mark) for all your advice. About your 2 links, i prefer the second one 'playphrase' i will look over it but it sounds great. For the first one, I'm not really a fan but thanks anyway. Thank you for your help, i keep working on each episode with the transcript.
Having a soft spot for something means you like it or it has a special place in your heart or good feelings for it ☺️ thanks so much for joining us in class today!
The channels I subscribe became all huge TH-cam English channels. I subscribe your channel. It means you will be definitely. I am excited to see it one day. Thank you for your hard works.
maybe you could make an episode about the amount of alcohol a driver can drink, for example in Poland where I come from this is a very important topic and I wonder what the situation is like in practice in Great Britain and the United States, how much you can drink, for example what a roadside check by the police looks like What are the penalties for drinking how society also treats drunk drivers I think it will be an interesting topic
I wanna ask a question can anyone answer it “ if I can understand each word of the video and also figure out what the topic they were talking about if I can do that I will understand in real conversation with anyone? Or the teacher are facilitating their speech for us to learn easily! I really wanna know cuz I’m confused if I can or not!
We really try in our advanced videos to speak normally and at a natural speed, however native speakers will often ask you questions back and forth so you may need to answer more quickly, especially during small talk at the beginning of a conversation. We’re also teachers so our accents are not too thick, but we definitely think you’re doing really well and the more you study with us the more comfortable you’ll feel with native speakers ☺️
Hi lovely teachers I am watching your video from US it is awesome but could please tell me how can I improve my speaking skills because my English level upper intermediate so I need your help guys please
Hi there thanks for listening! Speaking confidently is about saying the words fluidly over and over, if you can take the sentences, pause and repeat and mimic the speaker (Mark for British or Kat for American) you’ll notice it becomes easier and easier to speak them out loud. Hope this tip helps you in the future! We will start thinking more about videos that will help with speaking practice. Thanks for all your hard work and keep going!
Yes, you are correct! If we're offered something like a refill or a dessert and we're not interested, it's easy to say "I'm good, thanks." Good morning, would you like another cup of coffee or a pastry? -Oh, I'm good, thanks. -I'm fine, thanks. (meaning I don't want those things, but thanks) Hey I'm gonna grab us a few beers, you want one? -Oh, I'm good here thanks, I've got my coke. Are you sure? My treat. -I'm not really drinking tonight, so I'll stick to coke. Of course, of course, sounds good! Hope that helps!

Hi! That's a very good question and definitely a common issue for English learners.
I (Mark) can explain and give you some helpful videos and tips here. First of all, we are experienced English teachers, and after so many years and classes, we can quite naturally "grade" our speaking speed to help non-native students. Thanks for being here with us!
maybe you could make an episode about the amount of alcohol a driver can drink, for example in Poland where I come from this is a very important topic and I wonder what the situation is like in practice in Great Britain and the United States, how much you can drink, for example what a roadside check by the police looks like What are the penalties for drinking how society also treats drunk drivers I think it will be an interesting topic
I wanna ask a question can anyone answer it
“ if I can understand each word of the video and also figure out what the topic they were talking about if I can do that I will understand in real conversation with anyone?
Or the teacher are facilitating their speech for us to learn easily!
I really wanna know cuz I’m confused if I can or not!
We really try in our advanced videos to speak normally and at a natural speed, however native speakers will often ask you questions back and forth so you may need to answer more quickly, especially during small talk at the beginning of a conversation.
We’re also teachers so our accents are not too thick, but we definitely think you’re doing really well and the more you study with us the more comfortable you’ll feel with native speakers ☺️
good, is there any problem if somebody mixes british with american in his talking?
Not at all! As long as people can understand you, there's no problem 😊
Пригласите ещё канадца, будет здорово и ещё интереснее. С Новой Зеландии, интересно послушать, что они расскажут.
Вам не хватает третьего ведущего из Австралии, тогда был бы полный комплект! И аудитория бы выросла в разы! Удачи!😊
Thanks for your feedback! It would be fun to have speakers from different accents for sure.
@@highlevellistening я думаю не проблема найти австралийца или канадца)))
@@highlevellistening я вас слушаю с большим удовольствием, спасибо, весьма интересно, хотя много не понимаю)))
I am not in a drinking mood so I'll stick to a soft drink
Perfect sentence! 🥰
Süper duper 😊
Thanks so much for watching!
I think they also say when they don't feel like drinking or doing anything, I'm good which means I don't want , correct me guys if I'm wrong ❤
Yes, you are correct! If we're offered something like a refill or a dessert and we're not interested, it's easy to say "I'm good, thanks."
Good morning, would you like another cup of coffee or a pastry?
-Oh, I'm good, thanks.
-I'm fine, thanks.
(meaning I don't want those things, but thanks)
Hey I'm gonna grab us a few beers, you want one?
-Oh, I'm good here thanks, I've got my coke.
Are you sure? My treat.
-I'm not really drinking tonight, so I'll stick to coke.
Of course, of course, sounds good!
Hope that helps!
@@highlevellistening thanks for clearing the confusion away

Hello both do you have any email address I may write to for a piece of advice ?
Hello! Yes we do. Highlevellistening@gmail.com
W hat does 'some people are out there' mean?
It might refer to “people we don’t know” or “someone out in the world”
Teetotaler.
Yes, a person who doesn't drink alcohol at all. You can also say: "I am teetotal" or "I went teetotal a few years ago"
