I used to be the kind of parent who said "I will always support you and love you". And then one of my kids committed a crime that I could not support or defend. Loving your kids is one thing, but aiding and abetting is completely different.

Sons need their fathers for this, mothers are always going to naturally want to protect their children. Having a father in the household drastically improves the future behavior of any male in the family. Women can't, and shouldn't, raise men alone.

Neither of Brian's parents "aided and abetted" him. That would mean they encouraged and helped him strangle Gabby. Clearly they did not. The murder was a crime of passion (not premeditated), and Brian was in another state on the other side of the country at the time. He told his parents well after the fact. Dr. Grande is correct in saying that the parents have the legal right to remain silent, granted by the 5th amendment. That's why they consulted a lawyer to make sure they were not breaking the law.
I don't have kids, but I also would not stop loving them if they committed a crime. I would hopefully seek justice for the victims and get help for my child, but I wouldn't stop loving them.

Mayb to prove his love for his parents he was expected to off himself n the "actions" part of the letter was just the impedus. She's quoting as if on a par w/ God. Speaking of eternity as an eternity of HER love, cuz ya know.. God may not look too kindly on a murder, altho forgiving does not mean un punishable! If Gabby's van is still in yer driveway, no matter what happened, per him... a fight, argument.... a falling out, it's as if they're trying to show that it was something else other than murder!! Then, no time to "block" more like... contact them n tell them to get the dam van outta their driveway!!! But, yet that didn't happen. The timeline is everything n I know that they want every one to have amnesia... but we were all concerned in real time, well, i mean, as soon as Gabby's Mom stopped thinking the best of them n faced her reality in relation to them!

Would a desperate and frantic parent not file a missing person's report instead of calling two people not answering their phones? It took less time for them to book an interview with Dr.Phil for 25K after Gabby was found.

The problem I have with Roberta’s unconditional “love” for Brian is that she wasn’t just saying she would always love him no matter what he did. She went further to imply that she would also help him hide, cover up, escape the consequences of whatever act he had committed(or might commit). That’s not love. That is worshipping and enabling. It’s not surprising that he was as self centered as he was.

    • @karenryder6317
      @karenryder6317 ปีที่แล้ว +33

Yes, "always loving" doesn't mean you shouldn't speak out against the loved one's behavior. Indeed, to avoid criticism of his/her anti-social acts is the same as condoning them. Parents are supposed to teach their children right from wrong. To actually offer to assist your child person in evading the consequences of anti-social acts is the highest form of enabling and moral dereliction of duty.

The fact is his parents hired an attorney because they had reason to believe Brian was responsible for her disappearance. They hired an attorney the day he came home, they blocked communication with her parents, and refused to even refer to their former future daughter in law by her first name. Ladies and gentlemen, there is no question whether Brian’s parents knew. They knew the moment Brian told them and asked for their help.

But they obviously consulted him upon Brian's return as he admitted to speaking to Brian so it certainly would appear this was after Brian confessed to them what he had done. In either case though I don't believe them retaining or speaking to an attorney is something that can be used against them as they were well within their rights to do so. Morally they are repugnant but legally they had the right to say nothing.

The letter made no mention of an extended road trip. She didn't wish him safe travel and express hope that he and Gabby would have new and exciting experiences. She didn't make an offer to provide him a plane ticket home if things didn't work out for him on the trip. Gabby was paying for this trip and they knew that Brian was the weaker, emotionally and financially ,of the two. This was written after he returned but possibly before he confessed to his mother. I am, however, sure that his parents knew Gabby was dead the moment he returned in the van without her.

Then the Petitos should have done something on this day: Aug 12, 2021. Moab Utah.
Gabby called her mother from the backseat of the police cruiser. These statements are from the Petito v Moab lawsuit.
      3. Gabby contacted her family to tell them that the couple had been fighting, that Brian had hit her, and that the police had been called. The family immediately responded by beginning to arrange
for Gabby to fly home and to have her van shipped home, to separate her from Brian.
      98. Gabby then called her parents.
      99. On that call, Gabby’s parents demanded that Gabby fly home to get away from Brian, offering to pay for her ride to Salt Lake City and her flight home. But upon learning that the police were involved, Gabby’s parents accepted Gabby’s assurances that she should continue her trip. Gabby’s parents relied to their detriment on the police officers involved to evaluate the situation and intervene as necessary to protect Gabby. But for the officers’ failure to investigate and follow Utah law, Gabby’s parents would have intervened to end the trip and bring Gabby home.

An accessory after the fact may be held liable for, among other things, obstruction of justice.

This letter was very disturbing. I don’t believe for a second that it was written before the trip. I suspect that it was written when he returned home. Roberta had a strange relationship with Brian. Roberta is taking away Brian’s individuality. She’s saying “I know you will always love me too”. That’s quite an assertion.
I think the lawsuit is interesting. Bertelino made those statements on behalf of the Laundries when he should have just said “No comment”. The public and media were already making a lot of assumptions about Brian and his parents. They should have just used their right to remain silent and as an attorney you’d have thought Bertolino would have done that. It reminds of that attorney who represented Brian Kohberger when he was arrested in Pennsylvania. That attorney couldn’t stop making statements that for weeks after he no longer represented Kohberger. Sometimes attorneys who aren’t used to being involved in high profile cases can be overwhelmed with the questions from media and say the wrong thing. I think that’s what happened here. Bertolino even included himself in the statement saying “our” instead of “their”.

One is the set date, implying that there will be entire year's worth of material. The dude did not want to spend that much time on this, so they had to write his suicide into it. I was just talking to my dad about this letter; so great to get this take. I'm an only daughter and my dad and I have always been close while my mom and I have always had a very volatile relationship - we know deep down we love each other, but we just can't get along and my poor dad has often had to referee between us when I was growing up. That said, this letter struck me as just SO ODDLY worded that I shared it with my dad - he agreed that it was extreme, strange and uncomfortable. We also noted that there being no mention of Brian's father a little bizzare - my dad or mom would more than often say "we love you" or "we feel so and so way" or "your mom/dad and I something something"... the fact it's so exclusively, absolutely her and her son gives off very weird vibes (esp since they're not divorced or separated as far as we know). Just a thought... if this was written before the murder, I wonder if the "look at someone's actions not words [to know if they really love you]" was a jab at Gabby. Brian's mom seems like the definition of monster-in-law; the ones we all read about on Reddit who wears white to the wedding to upstage the bride, who has a key to the couple's house and barges in and interjects herself and had no sense of boundaries and everything is a competition with the bride/daughter-in-law over her "baby boy". 😒
Finally, yes, I agree that this lawsuit might be "technically" frivolous, but one really has to feel for the Petito's (and Gabby!) - the Laundries NOT saying anything/helping bought Brian time to run, which gave him the opportunity to take the easy way out (and spin his silly fictional narrative to try and get the last word in that notebook). The Petitos were robbed of their days in court and chance at something that feels like justice.

While still unfathomable for most of us, I'd wager it is still (slightly) more understandable for some parents to be stubbornly, willfully blind to the fact their child committed a crime (i.e. Lori Daybell's mom and sister in denial before the bodies of the kids were found) versus a parent who knows their child committed atrocities and tries to aid and abet them (i.e. Aiden Fucci's mother washing his bloody clothes after he murdered Tristyn Bailey). Also, also... the Laundrie last name is a French adaptation of a Germanic name that has Greek origins... not sure where the Italian thing is coming from. Petito is an actual unaltered Italian family name. This is also the 2020's, not the 1920's. 🕵🏻‍♀

We all overlook the flaws of other people. When does it become a red flag instead of just an interpersonal relationship? People end up gaslighting themselves on top of any other control/abuse by their partner; some people are in situations where they feel they cannot escape an abusive relationship. It takes an awful lot of courage to say "enough is enough" even when you can see what is happening.
I've been lucky that I've escaped such abusive relationships before anything serious happened, usually at quite a lot of personal loss and after a lot of time. I feel like the letter written by the lawyer was trying to circumvent their knowledge if Gabby's death. Saying "hope she is reunited with her parents" slyly conveys that she would be healthy. But, it was actually stating in subtext "hope her body is found and returned to the possession of her parents".

Many are speculating if the letter was written before the trip or after the son came home alone. I think it may have been written in between when the son came home to clear a locker and then returned out west. I think the son may have disclosed his state of mind to his mother at that time and his mother wrote the letter to show that she would support him no matter what.

I think this makes a very interesting observation towards the end, where he mentions that Brian was perhaps so accustomed to the absolute, unconditional love of his mother, that in fact he came to _expect_ that same unconditionality from everyone else, including his romantic partner. I am a survivor of domestic violence and spent 3 months in a DV shelter, and I can tell you that by far the most dangerous time for a DV victim is when they attempt to leave their abuser...I can imagine that at some point on this trip, Gabby came to the realization that her partnership with Brian was untenable and that she probably had a conversation with him in which she explained that she was no longer able to continue the relationship - he had violated certain fundamental boundaries (for example, using physical violence) that she was simply not willing to overlook or forgive. The fact that they were on the road at the time meant that she was in an especially vulnerable position, since she was alone with Brian in an unfamiliar area, far from her support network. I am virtually certain that when she drew a line in the sand, so to speak, Brian positively _erupted_ with rage. For someone to establish hard limits on their love for him was unfathomable to him.

I'm so sorry you had to go through d.v. aswell, I can contest from personal experience that the mothers attitude toward her son definitely contributes to whether he becomes an abuser or not. Women who see other women as competition or a threat, can breed dangerous mindsets. I fully support the Petitto family's, I hope they receive some sort of closure ❤.

And you are absolutely correct that when we tell them enough is enough, our lives are in danger as well. That is why I waited for too long because I knew what was coming. Luckily, I walked away unharmed. When I think about what she must have been through, it just breaks my heart completely. And what her parents have been through as well. I hope his parents get what they deserve for acting the way they did. Instead of sympathizing with her parents' suffering and pain. To the contrary of Brian, she had not a chance nor a choice to live as she was murdered.

In case they knew from Brian that he killed Gabbi when he returned, and then made the statement they hoped Gabbi would be found, couldnt they be dome for wasting police time and resources for the search and accessory to the crime? Same with finding Brians body: They knew where he was when he allegedly killed himself, yet let the police search operation go on for weeks, which cost the taxpayer money.

The letter was an attempt to avert the suicide and bring him back home. In the end the parents should of drove him to the police station and turned him in.
