  • Dr. Silvia Kreindel and Dr. Fred Soltero were the speakers for this webinar. Dr. Kreindel discussed how APHIS is assisting the Dominican Republic (DR) once APHIS confirmed the presence of African Swine Fever (ASF) in the Dominican Republic (DR) in July 2021. Following the detection, the DR requested APHIS’s support for eradication and control. The proposal included funding for equipment, outreach, indemnity, technical support, and other services, with the goal of eradicating the disease. APHIS established an Incident Management Team (IMT) in the DR and actively supported the DR Ministry of Agriculture’s efforts to conduct ASF surveillance, movement controls, and implement biosecurity/biocontainment procedures to limit the spread of disease. The presentation focused on APHIS’s efforts to control the disease in the DR and mitigate the potential escape of ASF into the US and the rest of the American continent. Dr. Soltero discussed the ASF Protection Zone and implications for Puerto Rico. Dr. Soltero discussed the current response strategies that will take place if ASF was confirmed in Puerto Rico.
