    Striking up a conversation with total strangers is not the least bit unusual here in Canada (or in the U.S. for that matter). You might find it a bit less usual in big urban centres like Toronto or Montreal but still much more common than the U.K. or Europe. We just returned from a trip to Switzerland and the only strangers we had a casual conversation with were tourists from India and Australia.

      I feel like the best times are when we get talking to people and learn something or hear some great stories, definitely one of the best parts of travelling! I’ll be taking this energy back to England! 😊

      @@robertpearson8798 when I did the trip to Nova Scotia 12 years ago it was my first time returning after leaving in 1971. I can honestly say that almost everywhere we visited over the three weeks I struck up conversations with people that either knew the same friends as me from when I lived there or knew something about friends I mentioned. Several times it led to meeting up with friends from my childhood in Pictou. It was the biggest emotional roller coaster ever. We toured the entire province pretty well and so much felt exactly the same as it did in 1971. A lot had changed in towns and cities but the rural areas had barely changed.

  • @JRTurgeon13
    @JRTurgeon13 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

    Ah! The proverbial cordiality in Atlantic Canada! My experience in Prince Edward Island. Coming in by sailboat and needing to do some repairs, a local man gave us the keys to his truck for the day so we could run errands!
    If and when you get to the Province of Québec (I don't know how long your trip will be), here are some interesting vistas in the Eastern part of Québec:
    - Bonaventure Island next to Percé: the world's largest colony of Northern gannets (Fou de bassan in French). To see them dive in the sea is impressive. You can visit the colony, but you probably can't bring your dog along. Bring nose plugs (the bird stench, reminiscent of wet dog smell times 10)!
    - Whale watching: all through Summer. on the North Shore of the St. Lawrence river (from Tadoussac and eastward). Several companies (from small rubber dinghies to large motor yachts). If you're unlucky, you'll ONLY see Belugas and seals. There are ferries at various points between the North and South shores of the St. Lawrence.
    - Cap Tourmente (just East of Québec City). Local stop of Snow geese on their fall migration South (end of September to early November). Thousands of geese at any one time. Snow geese are smaller that the more commonly known Canada geese.
    - picking wild blueberries in the Lac St-Jean (in August). Driving along the western side of the Saguenay fjord you'll get spectacular views (or from Québec City, you go through a Provincial park. Check the weather before you go. That road can get nasty in bad weather). Wild blueberries are much smaller than the commercial ones, but tastier. You can buy a 'plastic berry picker' to harvest more berries, quicker (~ $11 CAD).

Oh btw, for many camping/RV supplies don't hesitate to look up Princess Auto. They are across Canada too I think (like Canadian Tire) When you get to Ottawa Mountain Coop on Wellington street is also full of goodies. And another massive chain i Cabelas. In smaller communities Home Hardware stores are helpful too. They carry lots of specialized equipment even if not on their shelves you can always ask. Safe Travels!!! 🐾

Other than some obvious iOverlander spots for overnight, let me know if Sophia didn't tell you where they camped on the beach I can suggest you a couple. I try to keep them on the hush side so it doesn't get over populated. I LOVE quiet isolated camping lol Other than that when in Ingonish the Main street bakery restaurant is worth a stop for food. If you do make it into Syndey, it's worth a drive to Dominion for BEST fish and Chips on the Island at Aulde Shamrock. Not a tourist trap very generous portions. And most of all very warm hospitable environment. Let me know if you have any questions for the east side of Cape Breton or even highlands trail. If you will be near Sydney on Monday I'd suggest calling Princess Auto about the adapter you need. If they don't have it they will point you in the right direction.Enjoy the highlands, the sun and fog yes we get lots of it.

Luneberg (?spelling) is an amazing place, and I love the buildings, so colourful! I agree with what you said about living in a small space. You don't have to be messy, or grubby or eat junk in a van - unless it's the way you live normally. You live just the same as what is normal for you - except maybe a few less clothes, and no clutter - hehe! What beautiful scenes you wake up to, I live in the great Australian outback, and understand in how wonderful it is to be far from the hustle and bustle most take for normal! That said, maybe you could call ahead to an RV dealer down the road where you’re planning to go and ask them to order what you need and pick it up when you get there.

    You came to my hometown of Yarmouth! It’s a shame you didn’t make it to Carters Beach in Port Mouton, it would have blown your mind. Pictures don’t come close to doing it justice…..white sand and turquoise water.

    Asking if "all the Canadians" are the same in the remote eastern provinces as the rest of Canada is as strangely naive as asking if the folks of the Orkney islands are the same as the average Londoner 😂😂 can't wait for you to hit the province of Québec then! 🙃 🇨🇦

    Canada 101...
    The further EAST you go, the friendlier the people...
    The further WEST you go, the more violent crimes you get.
    The middle point seems to be the Ontario/Manitoba border...
    The most socialized province is Quebec, the least, is Alberta (and it's little brown-nosing puppy, Saskatchewan).
    Last point... The nicest drivers are in New Brunswick, and the WORST are probably in Quebec (especially the nasty old-age drivers)... I live there and I bike a lot. Those old people swear like lumberjacks and give me the finger all the time, when I'm following the laws and they AREN'T !!!

    • @demieverafter
      @demieverafter  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for your insight, so far I can only speak for eastern Canada…which has been a dream, friendliest people I’ve ever met ☺️ and I’m looking forward to experiencing it all!
