you will be surprised to know that the most famous medicine for hair regrowth minoxidil, was actually a medicine for blood pressure. but instead of reducing blood pressure, they found unexpected hair growth in patients consuming Minoxidil. serendipity isnt it, so finally in year 1988, FDA approved Minoxidil for baldness in male. In 1991, it was approved to use in female. Till today Minoxidil is treatment of choice in androgenetic alopecia.
What it does?
Minoxidil increase life ,thickness and length of thinned dying hair also called miniaturised hair.
Application ;
The standard dose is 1 ml solution twice a day directly at the scalp and not on the hair.
What if someone uses Minoxidil once a day?
Dosage of once a day is a reasonable option if it’s not practical for you to apply it twice daily.
Is it effective?
Yes. It is effective. And more so on crown or central balding areas. It is less effective on hair loss of
hair line, and on large bald areas as compared to small ones. It may not help in men with severe
balding.
How much time, does it take to show, visible result?
The greatest benefit from Minoxidil, is visible, between six months, to two years, after beginning the
treatment. After this time, you experience a gradual decrease in effectiveness of Minoxidil so, you’ll
continue to lose hair, but at a slower rate as compared to no usage of Minoxidil. Noticeable result is observed in 3 to 4 months.
How long does one use Minoxidil?
Minoxidil must be used as long as possible, for continued support of existing hair follicles, and the
maintenance of new hair regrowth.
It must be noted that minoxidil is treatment for hair loss not a cure
What if someone stop using Minoxidil?
If you stop using Minoxidil, the effects wear off within three months, and the previous pattern of hair loss resumes.
When you again start it, you generally don’t regain the hair that was lost, so it’s best not to stop and start the medication but rather to use it regularly.
Different concentration :
It is available in 2%, 5%, 10%, 12.5% and 15% concentration and formulation. Out of all, 5%
concentration is more effective for male and 2% concentration is more effective in female.
It is available in solution, foam and gel form. Foam is good for styling, and has less or no irritation, because it has no propalin glycol. But use of solution assures that application is proper on scalp. For long hair, use dropper and for small hair, spray is good. In case of itching and irritation, foam is the
best option.
Side effects?There are no serious side effects because of it’s application. There can be
1. Itching or irritation on area of application and on the eye.
2. It may cause irritation and itching which may cause allergic dermatitis in some patient due to the presence of propylene glycol.
3. Unwanted facial hair growth mostly with 5% solutions in female.
5.visible dandruff like precipitate on scalp seen. which shed off after shampooing.
6. Severe form of allergic reaction may occur in few patients.
Minoxidil is available in various concentration and combination:
Minoxidil with Finasteride, Minoxidil with Aminexil, Minoxidil with Azelic acid
and Retinoic acid etc.
In our opinion, 5% Minoxidil is the best. Minoxidil with Finasteride is the second best option for male.
Minoxidil for Female :
For female, 2% Minoxidil is the best one to start with. If 2% minoxidil is suitable, they can switch over to 5% foam for faster growth. If they observe secondary growth, then they should return to 2% solution.Female patients also seem to be more sensitive, to the potential side effects of Minoxidil, in decreasing blood pressure. Women have an increased risk of developing allergic skin reactions, on the scalp. It should be noted that Minoxidil might be harmful in women who are
pregnant or breastfeeding.
Conclusion :
So far Minoxidil is the only FDA approved topical medicine for hair loss which is effective and
useful in both and female.
But you have to use it for long term.
