    Today we take a look at one of the very few vintage snares in my collection:
    My Rogers Dynasonic (COB) from 1974.
    This snare model was played by the likes of Buddy Rich and other famous Rogers endorsers of that time.
    The demo with the various tunings etc. starts at 10:51 💪.
    I hope you enjoy this video and I'll hit you up with a new one soon 🥳.

    I have that snare also in my collection and have exactly the same thoughts about this snare. I love my vintage (oh yeah) Rogers Holiday drumset, and my Yamaha AHM. ;-)

      Nice to hear that you are having the same troubles 😅. Yamaha AHM for life 💪. Vintage Holiday might be ok 😉...

    Great video! Few months ago I was looking for a Dynasonic and after a lot of research on the internet and videos like this, I ended up with a Powertone COB and I love it.

      many years ago in the 1980's I had the pleasure of performing on a live gig at the basement cellar at the u of a in tucson az eat to the beat event function and the snare drum that I was able to perform on belonged to another drummer at the time so it was borrowed just for that gig and it was a rogers 61/2 ×14 dynasonic snare drum it had the original snare bottom snare drum tuning system off of it and it had just a regular 42 wide strand snare wire setup and it was tuned excellently and it sounded superb it was a chrome over steel model not a c o b 1 it was just beautiful looking and sounding ❤😊

    Speaks nicely with high and super high tuning. No muffling and with internal muffler

    Totallly agree ! But....
    I think that the snare really shines with the subtile ghost notes. Very defined and precise.
    Will sell mine too. 😉
    Nice video and superb drumming.
    And....
    Some vintage drums do sound fantastic. 😂

      Thanks, Nick 😎!!
      Yes, it's very precise, very staccato. That's what I would appreciate in this snare, if I was looking for something it CAN do really well. But overall.... As we both know...
      And of course there are killer vintage drums 😉. It's just important to know that not everything that's vintage is great - even if it used to be a big deal...

    Earlier this year I was able to purchase a 70's era Rogers Dynasonic (5 band) from the Highschool where our jazz band rehearses. The shell and rims were in excellent condition, but the snare wires and strainer were in bad shape. I ordered new wires and strainer plus replaced the heads. Purchased the drum from the school for $200.00 CDN and spent another $200.00 for the replacement snares, strainer and heads. So, getting this excellent drum for $400.00 CDN was an excellent deal!! I absolutely love this drum!!

      Great that it works for you! I just have some snares in my collection that I personally like way better. But again, it's all about personal taste 😉...

    Great Video! Thanks. Although I don't agree with you at all. This snare (mine is from 1973, same badge) is such a fantastic, precise tool. It shines, where others fail.
    First thing is control. There is no way that I get such a clean, controlled sound from any of my other snares (Yahama AHM, 1968 Acrolite, DW, whatever). Especially in the tonal range of this snare, which is kind of medium to medium high.
    Second thing is ghost notes. The Dynasonic is the king of ghost notes. I believe that's the reason why Buddy Rich and others played it (endorsements were not really a thing at that time). That rail system is a true game changer, once you have realized what you can do with it.
    BTW, in terms of build quality my Acrolite feels like rubbish compared to the Rogers. The Rogers is a tank. At the end of the day, if someone is a fan of modern, cracky, aggressive sounds and does not care too much about the finest nuances, this snare is not the best choice.

      Hey Paul and thanks for your thoughts! As I mentioned in the video we are dealing within the world of the arts here. Everything is subjective - so I highly respect your opinion, too. 😎

  • @migueldiazdrums

    Tried one and didnt love it either. The medium tuning with the internal muffler didnt sound that bad through the mic 🤔
    Finally a snare of the month video that doesnt make me spend any money 😂

    • @SimonSpringerMusic

      Haha yes it's the first snare that gets some shit talk, but it gets what it deserves 😉. I agree through the mic and in the end recordings it sounds pretty decent in almost all tunings, but live and in person and makes me wanna switch career paths 😅

    Back in the early 80s it was my only snare and I loved it; however only after ditching the cage mechanism and using conventional wires. In other words I turned from a dynasonic to a normal snare. I don’t have the snare anymore as the Rogers kit was falling apart and needed to part ex it. Have you tried removing the basket and fitting normal snare wires. Perhaps Canopus ones?

    • @SimonSpringerMusic

      Interesting thought and no, I haven't tried to convert it into a "normal" snare. On the other hand, I have 2 Yamaha Recording Custom brass snares, so I didn't feel the need to convert the Dyna into another conventional brass snare. But it might be worth a try... I don't really think that the rail system is the problem, though. I feel like I really don't like the shell...

    The Dyno sounds great on the video, however in person it might be a different story..I was kinda obsessed with Ludwigs Black Beauties for a minute, love their sound in recordings and plenty of videos i've seen, but almost everytime I played one ( all snares have been from the last 10 years, one day ill get a chance at a vintage model and see what’s up) at a store or a studio it sounded like a fine drum but i didn't enjoy playing it as much as i thought , i found them overly sensitive and wild, easily overwhelming the rest of the kit... I always try to play any snare ( kits and cymbals too)i want before purchase, its not that my ears are unreliable ( i work at a recording studio) its just that as a drummer i want to experience ( feel the contact and air dispersion) the drum not just rely on a sound file because as good as they can be ,it never paints the whole picture.

    • @SimonSpringerMusic

      Exactly! I always liked the Dyna in videos and even in my own video I find it sounds pretty decent. In person it's a different story, though. I love Black Beauties but don't own one right now. Might be interesting to check that out...

    It's beyond me why they don't reissue this exact snare. I totally respect your take on this snare.

    • @SimonSpringerMusic

      I think they might introduce it at some point. On the other hand, the vintage ones are pretty common and imo not so great (as you've heard in the video)...

    I have it in my collection and it’s ok. It kind of a generic snare drum sound. Not sure what the rave was all about with this drum.
    It does sound good tuned high though, but so does a lot of drums. Maybe it’s because I prefer 6.5” drums

    The COB or wood Dynasonic.?

    • @meekoloco

      @ My first drum kit came with a wood Powertone. 5x14 with only 8 lugs and normal snare setup. A few years ago, I bought a vintage chrome over brass one. Not much good for lower tuning but it was definitely a more open sound and the medium to high tunings were very nice.

      a personal favorite snare drum of mine that is made by the Roger's drum company will always be a super ten snare drum they are so cool in my humble opinion 😊❤ and they sound very nice

      buddy rich also played a snare drum that was made by the fibes drum company and I believe that it was a designated model that was known with the letters s f t which could of meant super fine tuning possibly

  • @MikeBixby

    tuned high, no muffling is where that snare lives!!! articulation galore. Putting a second /big fat snare head on that is just blasphemy

    • @SimonSpringerMusic

      In this videos I treat all the snares the same. Every snare has to go through all the tunings and treatments, including the second drum head. This snare sounds bad in almost all variations.

  • @traxband

    Had the same with a Ludwig Lm 402. the overpriced drum ever, such a huge trash. the quality sucks .not possible to tune ..gave it away ,my rogers I sold long ago..
