I really liked the first half but once it became more about the magical powers I dropped. This is just my opinion but it's such a bummer that authors don't feel like they can write romantic dramas without adding some magical powers nonsense into the world. I would have much rather it have stayed grounded and focused on Miyo growing into her own person without needing to justify her value by having 'super awesome special powers'. Still, the first 6ish episodes were good.

I forgot about the powers when reading the manga because they spent quiet a while with romance and devolving their relationship. I honestly wish the author had made the story without it because it kinda felt jarring when they went back to the powers plot.

The chance to see more female characters break out of the "soft girl" trope and still get a happy ending is a big part of why I'm enjoying the villainess sub-genre so much. Because as much as I love my soft girls (and I really do), I want my rough, angry, prickly girls too. I hope we can see some of those properties adapted eventually.

Me too. I have been diving in and I really enjoy how "villainesses" are allowed to be self-confident in their beauty, assertive in how they establish their boundaries, etc.
Edit: and more importantly, how they are allowed to feel anger and get revenge on their abusers!

A shoujo protagonist that breaks the mold for me is Momo from Peach girl. She honestly looks like Beyonce to me (and I like to think her style & overall look was based on her). Momo's personalty is that she's assertive and kind, however a big part of the anime is her insecurity about her tan skin & questioning whether her crush likes her or not. I love Peach girl but I can't bring myself to rewatch it because so many stupid things will happen in the show because of the villain, Sae. Sae is literally the root of all evil and I feel so bad for Momo cause she doesn't deserve it :(

I felt like the first and second half of the show were two different stories hacked together. The first one is the tale of how Miyo's family does not care for her because she has no value in their eyes, and then they marry her off to a man with a dark reputation who ends up seeing Miyo and loving her for who she is (what happened to the reputation of the husband, btw? We never got to know why all his previous brides ran away). And then (spoiler)
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
It turns out Miyo is super valuable in their twisted a system after all? And her father knew this extremely well? So suddenly the father's characterization makes little sense and Miyo goes from somebody who is worthy of love simply as a person to a "hidden princess" that's valuable for her lineage after all.

    • @magnadramon0068
      @magnadramon0068 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +27

Sorry but you missed the point of this anime entirely. Miyo's father didn't know she had powers only her mother did. And yes she does discover she has powers after all but the point was never about whether she does or does not have powers, but having powers shouldn't be the basis for how you treat other human beings.

    • @ulrik03
      @ulrik03 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +19

@@magnadramon0068 it shouldn't be, but in his worldview it is. Also he should *absolutely* know that Miyo's children would still carry the potential for the rare powers his own father spent a fortune to acquire. The head of the other family (who wanted Miyo) did.
And yeah it shouldn't be about it you have powers or not. But then suddenly Miyo has super powerful abilities just to show, what, that her family was wrong?

@ulrik03 I thought thag was weird too. I get the whole diamond in the rough plot and all but her father wasn't stupid. He knew his daughter came from a strong bloodline and he should have did what he could to preserve that because even of it passed her it could make it ways to her child.
But even so, WHY THE HECK WOULD HE MARRY HER OFF TO SUCH A POWERFUL PERSON????
Even if he had a bad reputation this mad is strong as heck. Why give him a chance to be stronger though his offspring had he taken a liking to miyo. Even if he hated her personality he still knew her bloodline

Tbh that seems so paradox for me. Why wouldn’t you continue her not having these powers. So that she can show these assholes of her family that having powers or not, are not how you define the worth of someone. She should have become all that even without the powers instead of suddenly being the chosen one essentially. We don’t have a good underdog as a protagonist that often. That would have been cool to see as well

I try to separate the soft "broken bird" depiction of female protagonists with the expectations of what makes (and doesnt make) a "perfect victim". I wish, representations existed in a vacuum but they dont and imo, these representations are harmful to women and girls, who are more likely to experience abuse with the added pressure to react to it in a "feminine" way.
I want to make it clear, that getting angry, feeling hurt, becoming physically violent, etc. are all valid reactions to abuse in relationships. Victims, who defend themselves are still victims.

I still loved the show, but I wish the magical powers (or lack there of) part of the series was handled more in a way as a disability. Like Throughout the beginning you're lead to believe that the main reason Miyo was treated badly was because she didn't have powers, being treated worse than even the servants and its implied she was hidden and rarely allowed to even leave the house. It really seemed like a bit of a connection to how disabled people were treated historically. (SPOILERS) But ofc the story couldnt keep the main character normal in a story filled with magic and wonder, and ofc she ended up having the very strong rare op power all along. Kind of like the question posed in this video "Who deserves to belong" the answer got is the quiet obedient girl, but also (at least with how i first interpreted the story) but also, the girls who got lucky and actually can fit into the norm

It's been a while since I watched a romance anime, so watching this one really put a smile on my face. My favorite thing about MHM is Miyo's character development. And she and Kiyoka are both really cute together but still have to learn how to understand each other and improve their relationship. Seeing them learn from each other is so endearing!
I was hoping for someone to analyze Miyo's psyche through the writing and animation! And I loved how you pointed out the gentleness with that makeup scene; I think it's my favorite scene because of how warm it is for Miyo and it's one of the first times she experiences genuine care.
Your discussion with soft-spoken, gentle female protagonists is also interesting and something I've thought about too, especially when it comes to black women's portrayal in mainstream media. We shouldn't have to be seen as gentle to still be seen as people worthy of respect--but it's still notably rare to see black female protagonists who are more like Miyo. So in a way, it's empowering for black women to be seen like that because western society has demonized and stereotyped black women to be threatening. It's kinda crazy how womanhood and femininity work differently for different women depending on society and life experiences lol

Peach Girl is such a double-edged sword because while I love it and Momo, I also realize that it's seriously flawed. Momo is brash, athletic and outgoing but still a hopeless romantic. But then the series goes out if it's way to justify her tan as natural and she doesn't do it on purpose negate she's not "one of those girls". Even if she is, there shouldn't be a problem. I don't know, my nostalgia goggles for series are strong.

I was rather disappointed in the series tbh. The husband changed his behaviour seemingly out of nowhere (unless I missed something, in which case please tell me). He was completely distrusting towards Miyo, and then suddenly he cared about her deeply. The stepmother and stepsister were so comically evil that I couldn't take them seriously. And everyone seemed to have lost their mind in ep 6. The sister's "plan" to make Miyo cancel the engagement made no sense. She had to leave Miyo go at the end to talk to her fiancé, and the fiancé had to believe Miyo wanted to leave him, so the sister couldn't really do much to Miyo or he'd notice something is off. That's why she threatens her to cut her kimono and silly inconsequential stuff like that (at first before she moves away from her original "plan" and starts hitting her etc). I get that it was a conflict/battle of morals and the kimono had a special meaning to Miyo, but when you look at it reasonably, the whole thing was just ridiculous. I could go on about all the other things that didn't make senee, but I doubt anyone is gonna read this long comment anyway, so I'll stop here. If you did read all this, feel free to correct me on anything that I missed or misremembered.

I watched the show with my mom and we really loved the first half of the show but once the last episode dropped, we both thought “that’s it?”.
Like I love the romance and the idea with the powers but the show didn’t really do a good job with building the world and how these powers worked exactly. And then the whole plot with the emperor being the villain just felt like it was shoehorned in there. I would have really liked to see more of the damage that Mio’s family did to her and see more of them getting their just desert then just having their house burned down and leaving to the countryside.

My wife and I liked how the anime started. We hoped it would be more Beauty and the Beast meets Cinderella. But it fell flat in the second act. I felt like some of the end message was being a trad wife (soft spoken good girl) is ideal.
I think one visual representation of character development they portrayed with the Miyo that was kinda funny as she became more confident her bangs got shorter…

This was I great video! I liked my happy marriage and I loved seeing miyo grow and find a place where she belongs. Though I had a hard time see her interactions with Kudo as romantic because of the power dynamic and where she started out from. In a way it reminded me of ancient magus bride. I forgot the specifics but there was a scene where chise was asked why she stayed with Elias and she responds that it’s because he gave me home and so she’ll stay until she’s told to leave. It’s the lack of options that kind of sinks it for me. So I found myself feeling similarly about both pairs. I like their dynamic as a pair, it’s really sweet but not really in a romantic light. That just how I feel though. Also based on even just the way they address and act around each the show seems to be aware of this dynamic so I’m excited to see what they do in season 2.

@@LeynaSept same. If you've lived mio's life or know people who have, it starts to feel way more realistic. For anyone who hasn't had that experience but wants to understand how a family treating one member this way for seemingly no reason isn't "cartoonishly evil" they can look into the family psychology archetype of the "scape goat". It's actually way more common than people think for a dysfunctional family structure to nominate one person who basically becomes an outlet for all the family's frustrations and take the blame even when they are not at fault.
It's not always to the extremely abusive extent depicted in this anime but it does happen often and honestly even mio's "cartoonishly evil" family's actions towards her are tame to me compared to what I know some children have suffered at the hands of their families in real life.

I love these kind of character type deep dives!
Kiyoko Mogami from Skip Beat! immediately comes to mind as a character that deserves more/renewed adaptations. She is a wacky and unhinged chick who learned to play a Quiet Good Girl for her own survival. Her whole story is basically her recovery from being forced to be a Quiet Good Girl for acceptance. It's truly a shame the anime only got one season!
The other sub-type of the Loud Flawed Girl is the one who is considered "manly" like Tomo in "Tomo-chan is a Girl!" or the ones that are considered "Prince Like" like Utena or Haruhi. Sometimes I just blame it on culture differences: the Ghibli version of Sophie from Howl's Moving Castle is so incredibly different from the original Sophie in the book, who is much more of a loud train wreck. I agree wholeheartedly with some else further in the comments that the villainess stories are doing a great job at giving us more forward and aggressive characters. Your video now has me wondering, who's the "Girl" in between Cinderella and Mulan? I feel like she's the one who's story I want to see most, much as I love the other two.
To add some more food for thought to the idea of belonging and community/family, the inspiration for Maslow's hierarchy of needs came from Indiginous world views, where community is a central need, not just third down the list. I haven't even started the video yet but I need to get this off my chest
I had high expectations for the fl in this series when I read the manga. The abuse she suffered didn't give her kind and desirable traits, but made her genuinely depressed who sees it as her whole purpose in life to wait on others. I really wanted to see her become stronger and learn to resent and move on from her family
But then... she's relieved they're all safe and wishes the best for them? Right after they nearly killed her? She's not traumatized or angry about anything that just happened, just caring and forgiving. And that's when it hit me
Soft girls in anime were never going to be good characters. There's nothing wrong with being a kind, forgiving person, but romance animes demean and mistreat their kind female characters because they think kindness means being a doormat. The narrative punishes Mio's family for what they did to her, her own husband ruins their lives for it. But she can't? She's not allowed to fight back or even be happy she got justice. And that makes me really upset

I used to love romance anime, mainly as a middle schooler still discovering myself and a lil bit as a high schooler. I’ve always been more into horror than romance but for a short time I just needed something different to fill the void and make me feel better about myself. There is something about seeing two characters falling in love that just makes you want to root for them, even if you are also bitter because you’re a lonely person.
I remember the first anime to introduce me to Romance was(not exactly a romance, but more of an isekai?) Inuyasha. I found the anime by accident as a young child with insomnia, I would stay up really late while my parents worked and watch stuff from Adult Swim(they had great cartoons and lil me loved good animation). The whole story and pretty characters just drew me in, and just like that I have been searching for the same feelings I had for that Anime since then, a mix of horror/fantasy/romance and most importantly, well written. Needless to say it’s hard to find any sort of anime that meets those expectations anymore, at least for me that is. Even Inuyasha’s predecessor was… gross. The character designs? Too much and yet lacking at the same time. The story? Bonkers, a lot of it makes no sense to me and feels very unnecessary. You can write stories about the children of main protagonist without them being crappy one-dimensional characters, especially when they are meant to carry on the legacy!
Anyways, sorry for ranting. I loved your video and you made so many good points without spoiling an entire anime, I actually really wanna give it a watch ❤

The first episode works hard to establish the to e and setting of a period drama and all the characters act in ways that are reasonable for where and gow they live. And then the second episode is like 'boom we're in an action show now'. Kinda feels like a bait and switch and makes the magical elements feel like something that was put in there to attract a wider audience.

I get that the story was centered on how she is supposed to shine and grow with this new opportunity. Still, damn if it isn't boring, this is coming from a girl who reads romance and horror on the daily and this was like a better quality Disney movie it has its message but it is just too boring to watch...it was like boring historical manwha that was created by someone Frankensteining tropes together.

I watched this with an open mind and like many of the comments here, enjoyed it for the first 6 episodes where it was more slice of life and about her being seen by Kiyoka and the people around him like his sister and Yurie. I knew about the fantasy element, but like others, I really disliked how her discovering she had a rare important power that essentially made her So Valuable to the other powerful families really put me off. And in the final episodes, it feels like it is only through that where she finds her value. It really negated the progress she was making with Kiyoka's sister and Yurie, who were two very important female characters in what I perceived to be the strongest part of Miyo's arc. There was another comment that pointed out that the framing of her not having a magical ability should be more along the lines of a disability. All the characters in the story are fairly flat tbh. As another comment that pointed out, nothing really comes off Kiyoka's supposedly cruel reputation. We never find out the reason behind it. I don't think the romance was very well-developed either, and if the show wasn't so beautiful and well-produced, I probably wouldn't have finished S1. But the writing and especially the characters and their relationships just fell flat for me. I don't even think that Miyo's family was that big an issue as we got to the second half, their cartoonish villain writing was the least of the problems. Ironically, when I watched the live-action version of the story, which was right off the bat way more focused on the fantasy/supernatural storyline, I actually found the romance more believable even though it was given less focus. The characters came across more compelling even though Kiyoka still doesn't really have much going on as a character, and same with Miyo, but the two actors in the roles were very charismatic and gave the characters more presence than simply being a 'cold prince type' and a 'sad cinderella girl' type.

I agree it would be great to see more types of characters get this kind of a story, but it's easy to see why the "quiet, submissive girl" trope is done so much. It is relatively easy to get maximum catharsis from a story about a person going 180 degrees against their nature to achieve what they most need.

One type of girl I haven't seen almost anywhere is the quiet but firm, maybe a stickler for the rules, blunt with words. They are not loud and don't even anger easily but they can't be considered "good" because they suck at providing morale and instead are better at solving practical problems.
Does it feel very autistic because I'm proyecting myself and the culture I live in treating that sort of girl like disturbing freaks of nature or easily abused pets (until they actually get angry)? Maybe

I think the tsundere anime girls are shown to be worthy of love in a few stories, but they may be more prevalent in shonen/anime targeted toward men. ToraDora with Aisaka Taiga, even Dragonball with Chichi, Bulma, and Videl. Kagome and Sango from InuYasha. Haruhi Suzumiya.
Haruhi Fujioka from Ouran is more blunt than outlandish, and she dresses as a guy, so there's that.
I think a common trope is to see a fiesty girl "develop" into a nicer shy girl, which is not always my favorite trope. Keiko from Yu Yu Hakusho seemed to fall off that way, as well as Rika from Digimon Tamers. Death Note and Bakuman's female characters do this, and it's all just bad.
I think Japan is a very reserved country, so we will probably continue to see an imbalance of shy and reserved girls, vs more outlandish girls. I mean, in Japan it's considered somewhat invasive and rude to shake someone's hand when you first meet them. It's just so much more normalized to be a reserved person than in the U.S. Are people writing an ideal, or are they writing what they know?

Having anime that works on a human level are a treasure
And that can so easily go wrong
Also, I think the demographic issue is sadly self filling...people 'age out' of anime, because they don't create more mature anime

What people seem to miss about the discussion about soft and gentle female protagonists is that while they are great on their own, they represent a stereotypical, dated and even harmful expectation for women and girls, especially in stories where women who don't fit are demonized. And I'm not saying that woman who fit into that mold irl are bad. I just wish women who didn't were accepted for who they are and not pressured into becoming someone different, oftentimes not for her benefit. This goes especially for women who prioritize things other than romance, marriage and motherhood.

I watched this one night because I was bored. Pretty cute. Basically Cinderella but in Japan. Stopped watching when the monsters showed up just because I felt like it was never supposed to be a long, action adventure story. Prefer it as its own little story. Idk. If it gets any better, someone tell me amd I may pick it up again.
After I was through with the show I showed the first half to my little sisters and they were OBSESSED with it for a few weeks. 😅

It still happens but it's very rare in Japan only 6% practice it and they are mostly wealthy families marrying for the purposes of maintaining generational wealth. Arranged marriage is generally viewed as a old and outdated practice, but this is a period piece so most people are going to look at it from the lense of that's how it was back then, not as something that is acceptable today.

@moustik31 yup,. Miyo can leave if she wants to, although she doesn't have any money. Miyo's sister in law was very easily divorced from her husband and was able to go home. Even getting a no-fault divorce in America can take months to years. Arrange marriages are more about controlling women.

I have a major irk with this series that the ml judges girls because he sees them as materialistic while ignoring that his family is also the same since they're looking for girls with good background and have significant wealth what's else was he expecting from those girls they're here because of they're social standing which your family actually cared about more than personality so I don't get why he's being judgemental and rude to them because of it and he treats others just the same because he doesn't do it based on wealth doesn't make him any better like his colleagues from his office he's still rude to them
