  • Edit: I have a newer, better and complete version of this song so please go watch it!
The first song I heard from Epic. As soon as I knew what it was about I knew I had to animate it, because I love Circe so much. The book Madeline Miller wrote about her is the most empowering thing ever, please go read it. ANYWAY enjoy the video :D

THIS is the only re-writing of history I approve of, that Odysseus didn't have to cheat. 😤 Like AT EVERY TURN every goddess wanted this man and FORCED him to sleep with them, meanwhile bro just wanted to get home to his wife. 😭 He literally wept every night on the beaches of Kalypso's island because of his situation. and Circe did the LITERAL definition of a quid pro quo sexual harassment.

The key word here is forced. With both Calypso and Circe, he was forced to sleep with them. As a rewriting, this is fine. This was a good way to avoid controversial themes and to trime down Circe's part, which includes a one year time skip, if my memory serves me well

That makes sense, and there was other stuff she also could have done. I refuse to believe that Odysseus would ever willingly cheat on Penelope.
And evidently it's not intended to get that far in the show because in the one clip for this song she's doing this so she can stab him in the back, and then in God Games Athena tells Hera "Never once has he cheated on his wife," so he didn't do anything with Circe, at least not by choice.

For example for a young girl, to be with a God would be a great honor specially if she would have a son from him. The fact that our boy Odysseus breaks free from it in the full version through sheer loyalty to his wife makes it a hundred times better. Odysseus: i love my wife
Hermes: yeah, yeah, but in order to get home you’re going to have to basically… um… use your *body* to *entice* some goddesses who could totally kill you btw
    Odysseus: fucking hell iwannagohome
i’m currently reading the odyssey in school, here are some quotes from the translation i’m reading:
Book 5, lines 151:156 “His eyes were always tearful; he wept sweet life away, in longing to go back home, since she (Calypso) no longer pleased him. He had no choice. He spent his nights with her inside her hollow cave, not wanting her though she still wanted him.”
Book 7, Lines 256:258 “Lovingly she (Calypso) cared for me, vowing to set me free from death and time forever. But she never swayed my heart.”
Book 10, lines 294:297 “She will be frighted of you, and will tell you to sleep with her. Do not hold out against her- she is a goddess. if you sleep with her, you will set free your friends and save yourself.”
When Odysseus leaves Aeaea, he goes to Circe’s room to ask her to leave. It is unclear whether or not he is sleeping in Circe’s room over the year he spends on Aeaea in this translation.

Circe proving that you dont have to be a man to be a pig. To be completely clear to anyone somehow confused. Circe is flat out telling him that if he doesn't sleep with her his men, the men whose lives he is responsible for and who he already blames himself for getting into this situation will die. This is not Odysseus cheating. This is Odysseus being forced into the act completely against his will and this will scar him emotionally for the rest of his life. I agree that you're entitled to an opinion, but nothing about this is romanticization of sexual assault.
This song is literally preceded by Odysseus' men being kidnapped and turned into pigs and this song is about his internal conflict while being blackmailed into sleeping with his captor. The only reason the visuals here are so sickly sweet and flowery is to show how Odysseus is affected by Circe's influence. Anybody who watches this musical or has any context about the Illiad should know that Odysseus isn't doing any of this willingly. The song's lyrics and composition make it clear that Circe's role in the story is an antagonist, and a forceful temptress at that.
It's not the responsibility of the composer nor the artist to inform people "sexual assault is bad." That should be a given. Their main motivator is creative expression, not to be a moral compass on their viewer's behalf. Nowhere in this video is the message ever "coercion isn't assault" or "assault is excusable if the assailant is a hot girl." If anything, the message is closer to "men are just as capable of being victims of sexual assault" and "abusers can take any form, even charismatic and deceptively attractive ones." If people listen to this song and the former two are their genuine takeaway, that's more an indication of their lack of media literacy and reading comprehension than it is a fault of the song itself.

Just a note in case anyone is interested in increasing their Odyssey knowledge. Odysseus did tell Penelope EVERYTHING about his travels, from when he left Ithaca until he returned. Including all about both Circe and Calypso. The only woman he didn't tell her about was Nausicaa, the princess who rescues him at the beginning of the Odyssey. Scholars have debated whether this meant Nausicaa meant more to Odysseus than Circe and Calypso or if she was so insignificant that she wasn't relevant enough to tell Penelope about.

@sleepyangel1972 This song is dancing around Circe raping Odysseus with her divine status and his trauma as her tools of choice. meanwhile, the commentor dives straight into it using "dominates the scene" which this is, it's Circe dominating the terms and conditions of the deal while subtly telling Odysseus that she can be doing worse to him. The comment then goes on to bring awareness to his lack of power and how he's effectively drowning in his memories where disobeying a different goddess screwed him over.
TlDR: There's another song in this musical where a group of suitors talk to each other about planning to rape Odysseus' wife. This song is Circe telling _Odysseus_ that she's going to use him for sexual acts he doesn't truly want to perform, and he has to let it happen or be responsible for more of his people dying and possibly being eaten (Hermes implies in his song that the animals are edible, meaning at some point Circe has had a person turned animal cooked and let them be consumed).

"[...] per rendermi vile e impotente una volta che io sia nudo e senz'armi?"

She might not be holding him down with a gun to his head but she's still abusing his morals and care for his men to pressure and essentially force him into doing what she wants.
