    Is there any way to set up autofocus with a timelapse? Im using a slider where the camera travels closer and further from the subject and it doesnt seem there is a way to do this, which is really unfortunate if not.

    For an all night time lapse of the stars, and landscape is s&q better to use than interval shooting?

    Nice Rundown. Like with other recent Sony cameras you can use an external remote that locks down the shutter, use continuous burst and use ND to balance your shutter speed at a third or half a second to get 1 or 2 frames per second. The camera clears the buffer fast enough even at 4FPS that you can run like that for as long as you like.

    I've recently started transitioning to Sony from Canon as their low light performance spanks Canon up and down the street.
    I considered going for the a7siii but am hanging back for the a7iv as more a stills shooter (finding my feet in timelapses) than video.
    The in built intervalometer on the 6D mkii is infuriating as cannot be stopped other than by turning the camera off while it is running and that has caused my memory card to be corrupted and lost me shit loads of data on a few occasions. They programmed it to turn on, you think it would be the done thing to programme an off button for it.

    thank you, what was that spinner on top of your tripod to make your camera turn as you're shooting. (5:50)

  • @LERAKO
    @LERAKO 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great insight in that section of the camera, definitively come back and do a astro trip here to test it hehe! I've been very impressed with how good (or better) the latest Sony are with ergonomics.

  • @concealedcameraman
    @concealedcameraman 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    at 5:50 how did you make the camera spin like that?

  • @Vlaakster
    @Vlaakster 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Excellent video as usual. At 5:49 in the video where we see you taking a time lapse, the camera is on a Genie Mini and it appears to rotate as one would expect, but I dont see a cable connected to the camera from the Genie Mini. How is it triggering the shutter? Is the Genie Mini not running the time lapse? Keep up the great channel Mat!

    • @MatthewVandeputte
      @MatthewVandeputte  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You've got a very good eye haha. I just set up the camera with its built in timelapse mode and had the genie spin for the same amount of time, making sure to start both the spin and the timelapse at the same time. Because of the slow spin you don't get much blur, and even then it's nice motion blur which is appropriate for the movement and shot!

    So is it possible to connect the external intervalometer to the A7SIII? How to do that? What port to use?

    • @MatthewVandeputte

      Just google intervalometsr for A7s3 and you’ll find the right remote

    Question, a little off topic but I need help, when you record raw, it takes a lot of the battery up.... how do you power it to the v mount battery ?

    • @Vlaakster
      @Vlaakster 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      A couple tips, you can use a USB-C PD battery bank to power the camera during time lapse. Additionally, if its anything like my a6500 you can turn off the rear screen and switch to viewfinder only (which only actually comes on when you put your face up to the viewfinder) and this saves quite a bit of battery.

    Great review! I'm interested in the A7SIII though I'm doubting about the resolution. Like you mentioned, I'd like to make some timelapses in 8K but also record in 4K60. Which camera would you recommend?

    It’s good to know what I can do in timelapse mode, not that I’d be buying it for timelapse either as I don’t do astro as often but it’s definitely on my horizon if and when work picks up for a video camera 👍🏻

  • @TheFilmmakingChannel

    What your go to shutter when shooting a standard timelapse? 1/50th? Or lower?

    • @Vlaakster
      @Vlaakster 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It should depend on the motion in the scene. If you're shooting slow moving things like clouds you can have any shutter speed you want really, but if there is anything moving fast in the scene you should go with a much slower shutter speed. I find when shooting people walking around for instance, I like 1/2s shutter speeds with a 1s interval.

    Do you know if sony will ever create nd filter adapter? Thinking of gettjng 12-24 F2.8 but lens doesn’t support ND filter (only on the rear side) like canon it would be nice to have their own dedicated ND filter adapter

    My Sony a7sii doesn’t have drive mode!!! So how?

  • @brianhawkins
    @brianhawkins 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Matthew - Do you know if using the built-in intervalometer will reduce the image quality? I know on my A7S2 and A7R2 the cameras go down to the 11-bit raw mode which gives up about a stop of dynamic range. Let me know if you've heard anything like that with this new camera.

    • @MatthewVandeputte
      @MatthewVandeputte  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Whew that is a big deal! Never heard of this happening before but will ask Andy if he can have a look for us.

    • @brianhawkins
      @brianhawkins 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MatthewVandeputte Yeah, not many people talked about it, but I remember reading that using electronic shutter or any of the Sony apps to trigger the camera, it would reduce the quality (might have been 14-bit, not 11...can't recall). Hopefully the new cameras don't do it since intervalometer is a built-in drive mode instead of an app.
