I've had the SAME string winder since 1985!
Red plastic, still use it to this day!
It's become a part of me!

The best mat for guitar work isn't a guitar mat, it's a yoga mat. It's wider, three times longer, and one-third the cost. But StewMac can't sell them for $129.99 so you can't buy them there.

Great video! I think, above all, staying organized will probably be the most important thing. Labelling everything is a great tip. Im not a luthier or guitar tech, but an HVAC mechanic. I cant even count the number of repairs and jobs that ive mixed up over the years. Staying organized takes little effort, saves time and money, and if you're a pro it's just a good presentation of yourself and business.

The first song I ever tried to learn was Little Wing.
My first fret job was stainless steel.
    Don't be afraid. Jump in.

Thanks, Jeremy. Some of the gear I have up to the limits of my eyesight. Having good local guitar techs is another group to make friends with. PS I got one of those Tone Traveler from The Acoustic Shoppe. It really improved solid wood dreadnoughts, grand adotoriums, small Jumbo, and a Furch nylon string. Thanks. Howard

I got those flat wrenches but they don’t fit squier pot nuts. Had to use my Craftsman socket

Great info Jeremy. I have the cheap caliper too. Doesn’t stay off and starts flashing as soon as I pick it up. I stopped using it because I don’t trust it. Will invest in the better one. Glad you pointed that out. I thought I got a dud.

“Looking at you Larrivee” 😂😂😂 I have one of those wrenches in my luthier tool drawer and couldn’t remember which guitar I had bought it for! 😂😂 I traded my last Larrivee around 2010 or so.

Those are some very nice tools, and yes, buying the right tool sometimes costs more. But what I've always struggled with StewMac is they are REALLY expensive. They have excellent tools that absolutely work for the job.
I try to get the right tools, and I get the ones that I just can't get good quality elsewhere for less from StewMac. I have a bridge placement tool from them that I love. I do think the tool for pickups in an acoustic guitar is intriguing, and I may have to get one, either from StewMac or if someone else sells it at a better price.
I got a soldering iron at a local electronics shop and it's really good, and I don't regret spending more to get it.
One thing I'll say for them, when I bought the bridge placement tool, I figured out very quickly something wasn't right with it, and before I even could talk to them about it, they sent me a replacement part that was the right part (rather than the wrong part I got) that made it right, so kudos to them for proactively making it right.

I have needed a guitar tool 20 times to do a job, went to stew Mac, to find it…realize their name brand is way to much money for what it is, and bought it from another more affordable supplier….if you asked 100 guitar guys what’s wrong with Stew Mac, 99 of them would say price…..we know it, you know it, let’s fix this problem Stew Mac! Cheers

@@steelhead197 That's exactly the issue. That's why I only buy things that I just can't find anywhere else, and even then it better not be insanely expensive.

Good advice. I made my own pickup install tool and a tuner press, but I didn’t know about this stuff back then. Question for you? On a compound radius electric neck , do you set the bridge saddle heights at the highest radius; I.e. the one at 21 st fret?

All good stuff, but it would be nice if he would explain that he just shared hundreds and hundreds of dollars of tools. It's a huge factor because nobody will ever say "I became rich working on guitars." Nobody. Well, other than StewMac.

Mike mcconville at guitar repair@ string tech ( check out his channel) used to do a trick of tuning a guitar using the drill string winder attachment, could get the guitar in credible tune just using the drill was fun to watch

I dislike StewMac customer service!! Horrible!! No direct phone customer service. You have to send them an email then by importance they might call you. Till this day 4 times I have sent an email inquiring about their products. No phone call. My impression is that StewMac does not know that customer service is very important. Having a dedicated team to answer phone calls is Job #1!

Wow, that’s the exact opposite of my experience. I have called them several times, but not lately , about what I need to address some issues and they were right there for me. I wonder if COVID thinned their service herd?
