    I’d say it’s part of your day rate. Not an upsell. A cart is not just for the client, but also for you. Efficient work and less stress meaning you can focus on your filming task.

    • @davidmorefield

      I think I’d have an ‘adjusted’ day rate for jobs that would greatly benefit from a cart. Just one normal flat rate, no line item.

    • @REMY.C.
      @REMY.C. 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Exactly that, the cart is mostly for you so you can focus on your work and be more efficient. If you rise the rate of the stands and other heavy things by a few dollars each it could work as they are working in tandem, the cart is needed if you take the stuff, that way client can't say
      - can we not pay for the cart?

      @@davidmorefield I'd vote for including it as part of your day rate for one simple reason: If a client doesn't want to pay for it, but you know it's going to make your day go easier, you're going to bring it anyway, right?

    I don't bill for it, but I do list it when I put a quote together so that comparable quotes are mentioning a camera cart.
    I think it definitely adds professionalism, similar to filming with an FX6 versus a Sony A7s3.
    While you might not be able to visually see the difference, I explained to them that it really makes a big deal in terms of efficiency and our ability to capture more footage in a given day.
    Often I'm filming with a production assistant who can help with gear but I can load up a lot of gear with a 4 foot long camera cart.

    As a DP I think it's a little tougher to add it as a separate line item. Not sure how you're billing things out but you could try to build the cost into a package price and try that. Otherwise I would just chalk it up to the cost of business and workflow improvement. Try getting a Robocup holder for your drinks and miscellaneous!

    She works like a charm David! Super happy for you. That’s a specialized piece of production equipment that definitely turns out to be a quality of life hack especially for solo shooters. I’ve added a Cosco branded 4-in1 cart to my arsenal in November and it has been an absolute game changer for me. The biggest feature I’m lacking right now is foot brakes for my rear 10” casters. It makes you more efficient, it makes you less tired, it allows for you to set-up and tear down quicker, and it adds more professionalism to you and your package. NIce. I looked at that cart when upgrading from my beach trolley. I went with the Rock N Roller - pimped it out recently with a media station (top desk/s), cable rack and cupholder. A few things - A camera cart is a tool and convenience for you as a DP but is not something you should be charging your clients. This is an investment for you as a filmmaker to save your back and time hauling gear back and forth. Inovativ is expensive, yes, but absolutely worth it. You learn fast in this world of gear that there is a massive difference buying high quality equipment from name brands vs cheaper knock off brands. They last. I'd buy my Inovativ over and over again if I had to. It's priceless. I can load that thing up 500lbs and move it around with absolute ease. Lastly, you will obviously out grow your car if not already, with a cart, some lights, stands, and camera bags. Just something to think about, especially if you want to keep the wheels on your cart when loading/unloading out of your vehicle.

    When I was young and stupid I had a car accident in a hatchback car filled with a some c-stands, 2 combo stands, a 2-piece kinoflo set in a flight case, a joker 800 in a flight case and a set of astra's in a pelicase. Car was totalled but by some miracle I had no scratch. they told me to get a "pizza van" (European cargo mini-van VW Caddy), which I detested at first. But it grew on me and the risk of an accident becoming lethal because I want to load my cool car with work stuff just isn't worth it. Also, when I roll up on the job, my vehicle tells you I'm there to work.

    ACs often bill a kit fee for the use of items like hand unit or monitor or cart. This is less common for a DP to do. If your working solo just up your day rate now because you provide more value. When you work as DP with larger teams with assistants and camera operators working under you in your department the rentals will come from a Rental House but if you have certain tools production will rent from you if your AC does not have his/her own cart.

    I do stills (commercial advertising) and use an Evo Voyager as a DIT Cart. I put it down as a rental for every job I bring it on. I add $250 to my equipment fee line item for it, and nobody ever bats an eye. It paid for itself within a year.

      @@davidmorefield Just a note: of course not all clients would be ok with this. If I'm shooting an editorial and the photography budget is $1000 all in they would care if I tacked on a $250 fee for the cart. But any job where I'm in the $3-10K per day range it hasn't been an issue. Maybe because it's small compared to other line items, so even if they're looking to trim, it likely won't come from there. And if there are any doubts on needing it, once they see it on set and how much more efficient we are moving between setups they totally understand why I prefer to use it.

    My cart is for me, to make my life easier, so I’m bringing it whether someone pays for it or not.
    You probably need to adjust your rate up anyways, inflation and what not, so value of the cart / 20 (what rental houses kinda sorta base rates off of) is $63 or $70 depending on if you’re talking full price or sale price.
    Maybe just add $50 to your day rate if you want, or call it $100 (or more) and test the waters. Don’t know till you try, and it looks like you’re building good relationships. The thing will be paid for by summer time, easily.
    And of course it is my cart on set. Rarely do I let other people put stuff on my cart, especially drinks. Consider once your first one is paid off, maybe down the line you could get a second cart and offer it as an upsell item. Looks like this job could have benefited from two carts, one for camera, one for everyone else. Heck, I’m the kind of person who would bring a spare just because I can.
    I do have several carts, but two of them are the big 24x36 rubbermaid, so they only ever leave the house if there is a truck to come pick them up, which hasn’t happened in a while.
    I like the design of your new cart copying the innovativ method a bit, the only thing I already don’t love is the road case style twist locks on the long side, not on the not on the short/end sides. A lot of t-shirts are probably going to get snagged and torn up on that.
    Keep having fun!

    I would advise against charging for just the cart specifically. I would probably up your day rate a bit if that’s going to be your main cart and you can justify it by saying you’ve invested into more gear and ways to save time on set. Only time I recall charging a client for a specific item was when I was requested to bring a Sony FX9 when I only had a FX3. That’s when I charged the client for the rental of the camera. This cart is nice but the price of those things seems very high.
    To have a mid level maybe you could mod the tubes with clamps on which you could put a wood plank (with some sort of system so it doesn't slide). Once disassembled the plank could fit inside the cart box if there's enough space in it.
    For the stands in the trunk, there are ratchet straps with hooks (I think they called). If you have loops in the trunks, you attach the straps then you secure the stands and tripods with the strap tightening handle. It's very effective.

    Not to be that super cheap guy, but ever thought about upgrading the casters on the cheaper model? Seems like the casters is where you’re getting your biggest value out of the new cart!

    • @davidmorefield
      @davidmorefield  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, I did! It ended up ruining the integrity of that part of the cart. I constantly have to retighten it and I can’t go too fast or else it will wobble. It was user error when installing.

    whats difference in this and the inovativ? do the wheels stay put on the inovativ or do they have to come off to fit in a trunk ?

    • @davidmorefield
      @davidmorefield  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s an almost identical design. Maybe Adicam is using cheaper parts. It seems strong enough for my work though. I’m using it on a job rn so I’ll keep adding my thoughts in the vlogs.

      is inovative wheels faster to set up ? @@davidmorefield

      @IMDABROWN 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@creativegreatsvisuals faster would depend on the person. Both come on and off slightly different because the latch is in different locations . Apart from price, Inovativ has a few more modular designs and charge More cause they were one of the 1st and had A monopoly in that segment of equipment.
