  • Part one of a long series on both Metal Hurlant and Heavy Metal illustrated science fiction and fantasy magazines. Métal Hurlant was formed in France in 1974 by Moebius, Druillet, Dionnet, and Farkas aka Les Humanoides Associes. Two years later, National Lampoon would publish Heavy Metal magazine which more or less reprinted the comic book stories from Metal Hurlant. We take a good look at the new 290 page illustrated book "Metal Hurlant 1975 - 1984" the prime early years of the magazine featuring art by Moebius, Druillet, Caza, Claveloux, Bode, and stories by Dan O'Bannon, Dionnet, and more.

    Great review. It’s nice to see the magazine being covered for an English speaking audience. Being a teenager in France when the original Metal Hurlant came out, it was clearly so important. I remember in the late 70’s and on, people would just have to say “did you read the last Metal?” and everyone my age/generation would know exactly that they were talking about Metal Hurlant… crazy exciting times.

      Thank you, Patrick. When I was a teen here in the U.S., it was the same with Heavy Metal. People loved it and everyone talked about it constantly. We had never seen such a thing devoted to science fiction and fantasy. Metal Hurlant truly did create a world wide revolution in comic art thanks to the great ones, Druillet, Dionnet, Farkas, and Giraud.

    Great job. In 1975 I picked up a ' coverless' copy of metal hurrlant in the bargain box. From best of two worlds. A comic book/ head shop. Looking for Frank Frazetta stuff. And held onto it like grim death. ❤😂😂

      Thank you. When I was a teen in 1978 I picked up my first copy of Metal Hurlant from Bud Plant at a convention, might have been Worldcon (Iguanacon) in Az. I never realized Bud Plant was the exclusive U.S. Metal Hurlant distributor in the early days.

    Good overview, Mike. It's nice to see the building blocks of Metal Hurlant. I was unaware of most of this information. Thanks! See you at 7:00 to discuss some flicks.

    I just picked up a copy. I had no idea this volume existed Mike so thank you for that.
    The absense of Corben makes some sense. This was kept all European since that is the root. As loved and admired by hos contemporaries as Corben was, I think they kept it core only to keep the French flavor.
    Then there is Bode being there so...

    • @horrormike
      @horrormike  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the inclusion of the American Bode makes the Euro argument moot. As I said, it was probably a rights issue seeing that Corben was a huge aspect of Metal Hurlant for years.

    Alot of the stories are were reprinted in heavy metal magazine here in the USA 🇺🇸the long tommorow was made into a graphic novel later on

    • @horrormike
      @horrormike  ปีที่แล้ว

      True, Philip, and it was a rather short graphic novel at that. The story is only about 20 pages so the graphic novels they released came with a few other stories to beef it up.

    Hi Mike fantastic art & detail yeah that opening story about the alien spy was funny. That character does remind me of Peter Laurie i never heard of Metal Hurlant until you started talking about it. I was always aware of Heavy Metal though. Mike i don't know if you're aware but the audio would cut off for a few seconds & then turn back on quite often. Speak to you later today on your Friday stream.

    • @horrormike
      @horrormike  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes indeed, Metal Hurlant was the original magazine from France, then Heavy Metal was released in the U.S. two years later. The sound is not cutting off, there's just no sound there so I cut those areas out completely which kills the background ambient sound. Probably why is sounds cut off lol. See ya tonight!

    @1:12 is the narration saying "artist Vasarely does not inspire me."? As in Victor Vasarely? I couldn't find that quote by Ray Bradbury anywhere on the internet. Is that verified?
    @1:16 "need this new generation that I would compare to Hogarth door Goya or the raphaelites " Pronunciation is a bit confusing because its a french name Gustave Dore.
