    i like your videos...and your common sense approach to handling your smokey.....
    just inherited my parents grey....i grew up with him
    our guess is that he is close to 50 years old.
    he is great....am enjoying him in our home. he sounds just like my mom and dad....(they are both in heaven now)
    he got a little over stimulated the other day....to many people around and he bit the heck outta my arm.....wouldnt let go
    i stayed calm and he released....
    i used wichhazel to clean the wound and then put 40% zinc oxide (diaper rash ointment) on it....that healed within hours.....couldnt believe it!
    thanks for your time and efforts....

    It’s a pleasure watching Smokey enjoying a shower. It would be helpful to see a video of a bird who doesn’t enjoy or hasn’t had many showers, yet. A tutorial for encouraging a bird to shower who doesn’t like them or one that shows how to start giving your bird showers.

    Thank you for this video! I currently use a spray bottle to give showers but I’m going to look for that pump action water mister. Our Grey has that same bell and he LOVES it! I thought he was aggressive with it too but after seeing Smokey interact with her bell I’m guessing it’s normal behavior. I love watching and rewatching your videos. They are helping us so much with our CAG. We also have a Mexican red head Amazon and are doing touch training with both birds. Your videos give us so much more confidence and motivation.

    You are an awesome teacher and helper for all caged birds whose owners heed your videos. You're teaching me a lot and I'm grateful you are not ego-based, plugging your TH-cam merchandise or telling me to donate. Would you consider doing a video on bird sanctuaries or bird rescue centers as a source of companion pets? Also, would you please consider a video on bird retrieval for an escaped/lost bird or found bird? I found out 911 Parrot Alert the hard way. Thank you for any consideration.

    My african grey Morris loves taking showers he either stands in the bathtub while i shower him using a fine mist that i can chose from the showerhead. Or sometimes i fill upp his waterbowl with more slightly warmer water and he will step right in to it and play around in the water😊

    Hi wingsnpaws!
    I’ve been watching your vids for 2 years now and have been wanting a bird or just pets in general all my life. Most of the time throughout my life, I never had the right circumstances to be able to own a long term pet. Such as space, correct environment, etc. Now, after a while, I am finally able to get a pet. I’m definitely going to get a bird because it seems most suitable for me to get. Now, whether or not I get an African grey or what bird I get is a different topic, and that’s not the issue here. What I would like to talk about is that due to the fact that I’ve never had any experience with being around animals, I get very nervous and anxious to be able to hold a bird or any animal, really. Some people may describe the feeling as “scared” and it is sometimes like that. But I do not feel any fear. I don’t feel anything when I look at animals through a screen or when I see Smokey in your videos. The problem comes in when I go in person and I get close to any animal, I am very hesitant and nervous to touch it and to be too close to it. Now I do think that if I do get a pet, I’ll be able to handle it very well and would be able to take good care of it. The problem is that I have never grabbed or held any animal before and it’s a little frightening for me when I try to do so in person. I would like to say that when I was younger, I had 3 budgies. Tho, because of my circumstances I didn’t have them for too long and really never interacted with them due to this feeling. But it feels like something I’ll be able to get over. It’s simply the fact that I can’t interact with the animal. I get a little bit scared to walk by dogs or cats etc. Please give me a solution for this if you can.
    Thanks all :)

    I am totally blind but do have four birds. And African grey, a mini macaw, a Goffin Cockatoo and a little Meyer. I know that three of my birds love the shower however, I feel the cockatoo may not do so. I wonder when I feel her body that she is not as relaxed as she should be. I will now look at alternatives in bathing her. I adore both you and smoky and find your videos entertaining as well as educational and informative thank you I am also a new TH-camr and subscriber this is because technology can be a little difficult as I am older also.😁🤯 more videos please!

    Water makes you see the kind of different feathers birds have. My cockatiels (they love showers) are like Smokey, a lot of water is needed for them to get soaked. My green cheek conure, on the other hand, is like a sponge, a couple of drops and he looks drenched (he doesn´t like showers he prefers baths).

    • @wingsNpaws
      @wingsNpaws  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup, no need to take her into the shower if she's already enjoying a bath. Doing so will only gradually lead her to hate/fear water.

  • @angsfeatheredfriends

    Some like a bath, some like a shower, my bugies like both lol....my cockatiel on the other hand, he had a different owner for 6 years, who I think used water as punishment or something, he hates water, aside from drinking it from his dish. Been slowly working with him for about a week now, he has a lot of behavioral problems I am working on, before I tackle that one.

  • @Ansonidak

    My conure loves COLD water to bath in. I initially found out about this when I was thawing some shrimp in the sink with running water. I turned around and found him enthusiastically bathing in the bowl of very cold water. He shows no interest in bathing with room temperature water even though he always has access to a large dish of it. I just make sure the room is nice and warm before letting him bath in cold water.

    I had a lovebird, and I have had a bluefront. Lovebird loved both, the bluefront always took showers with me. I would put her up on the curtain rod of the shower and bath first and by the time i was done she would be in full bathing frenzy and I would have the shower strike my shoulder to cut the impact on her while she was on my arm.

    My budgie refuses to bath. He even has a bowl of water I put on the floor with the intention for him to bathe in, but instead that's just became his drinking bowl, but he won't bath lol. He won't touch his regular drinking bowl. I'll probably use it for some alternate food instead as it serves no purpose for him really right now.
    He likes water though. Showering isn't a problem at all. I guess it's just down to the birds preference.

    I have a question about the aviary. I’m looking to buy one soon but was wondering about the bottom of it. I live in the country part of FL where there is a lot of land.. where there are plenty ants and other insects.. do you have a cement bottom? Should I treat the surrounding grass area? I’m just worried she’ll get bit by something or eat an insect that she shouldn’t.. yknow?

    It's been years since my bird has enjoyed baths or showers :( I don't know how to get my CAG to enjoy it. I've tried: Shower, sink, mister inside, mister outside, room temp water, cool and warm water... My bird just loves to "shower" in his water bowl, which only allows for his feet and a bit of his body. I've tried a bigger bath at the bottom of his day gym, but hates it. Any recommendations?

    • @cockatielnation5425
      @cockatielnation5425 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      KentSpain85 my grey loves to bath in a large dish ON TOP of his cage. I use a heavy ceramic oven dish so it won't tip over.

    • @TheMaragorn
      @TheMaragorn 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm in exactly the same boat as KentSpain85. My grey is an older plucker and I want her skin to stay at least somewhat hydrated, but she doesn't even take "foot baths" in her water bowl much anymore. Bigger bowls go ignored or are tipped over. At this point, I've resigned to giving her showers outside in her aviary, even though she doesn't like them. It's the least scary method I've found (she's completely terrified of the sink, for instance). I don't know what made her dislike water so much, but she's a pretty paranoid bird in general.

    • @yanusanders7686

      @wingsNpaws  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If he already takes a bath in his water bowl, just replace the water bowl with a larger bowl. As someone else on here mentioned, you can get a ceramic bowl thats heavy enough to not tip over.

    Since a few months I have a lovebird and your video's really helped me better understand my bird and what she needs. I like your gentle approach and respect for the birds natural behaviour.
    Maybe you already spoke about this topic, but I'd like to know what you think about a companion for your bird. My bird was alone when I adopted her. Her cage is open during the day and she really bonded with me. And I know that in most cases your bird won't get along with just any other bird. But sometimes I feel guilty that she doesn't have someone who (so to speak) speaks her language. I'd like to know what your opinion is. (Or anyone else who reads this)

    • @wingsNpaws
      @wingsNpaws  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, Smokey will definitely be getting a companion in the near future. I am still looking around but also am in no rush to just bring any bird into our little flock. I do think they do better when kept with other birds, especially those of their own species.

    Hi John, despite of many followers/questions I hope you will manage to find time to answer mine ;-) I have had african grey Kuko for 6 years now....gave him as much attention as I could, however he is a plucker, but he has times, when he stops plucking, then he starts again, but he tends to go for a certain place on his body, so I can tell that its a kind of neurotic issue...Anyways he is a great talker, knows many words and uses them at the apropriate time of day or situation so as if he knew their meanings... He seems content with us overall considering our circumstances and lack of out of cage time etc....We have just had a baby, which means even less time to spend with my grey, so I have been considering to give him away to a parrot sanctuary, where he even might find his soul mate, I mean a female as well as he might become a part of flock and be happy there... Do you think this would be the right decision? Of course I would visit more often in the beginning to make sure he is doing fine etc... Also I am his favourite from our household and it must be this time of year, when they breed as he regurgitate towards me and gives me all sings of love, which I ignore and do not encourage him, so I would leave him alone for a bit till he calms down.....
    This makes me wonder whether your smokey shows sings of love towards you??? You must have had this happened as she clearly adores you.... and How did you or do you deal with that sexual behaviour? by the way my email is geronda33@gmail.com and skype name geronda .... I can imagine that you have many similar requests of getting in touch with you directly asking for advice/help with their birds... if you ever happen to be in South Wales U.K. you are more than welcome to visit us.... it is unfortunate that I have been able to find anyone locally who could help me with my grey as well as to find any good place where I could possibly leave him when on holiday or if I do decide to look for a better home for him... despite tha fact that it would be heartbreaking for me...wondering what Kuko is feeling/thinking, when I would leave him somewhere in strange place etc... this is a reason why I have not done so yet, but keep thinking that it is not fair to keep him here if I cant give him all the time aand attention he deserves and needs...like I mentioned, I have had him for 6 years now from baby, when he was 3 months old.... he developed bitting habit and plucking too thanks to our mistakes and wrong handling, but I have learnt a lot and his biting eased gradually, but not his plucking, he does it occasionally, then he lets feathers grow back and after a while he plucks again but goes for a particular area on his chest which definitely means something.... perhaps that it is a kind of neurotic behaviour or and he does it now out of habit even when he is not stressed or bored etc......who knows, whish I understood him better....

    Hey as soon I say this video I clicked it. I have a problem with showering or bathing my bird. He is a cocktail weiro does not like showers and does not like eating fruit or veggies. He is very picky, and he is the second bird I had. The first one I had would eat everything and have a bath everyday. I don’t force him to show or anything and I did spray him a few times but he just kept running away in the cage so I had to stop. Does where the bird is in the house matter if they have a shower? My bird sits inside the house near windows. Should I try leaving him outside so then if he bathes? I’ve only ever seen him bathe once and that was at the start of the year. He is only year and 7 months old. I am not sure what to do cause I’m afraid he might be damaging his feathers every once in a while due to the fact he doesn’t bathe.

    Sorry to ask this but how old is smokey?

  • @Sinful_Badger

    I just starting watching your videos and love them, I saw in a few that Smokey tends to run her beak over her perch and was just curious why? My uncle had an African Grey when I was 9-10 and she was so sweet but knew nothing about them but I'm trying to learn since I do want to have one eventually and want to ensure that I know all I can

      That's how birds clean their beaks.

    When bathing your Grey is it okay to use baby shampoo? Or any kind of shampoo on your bird?

    I’ve just recently got an African grey parrot and I was wandering what food would you recommend and what benefits would it have

    • @wingsNpaws
      @wingsNpaws  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not qualified to give recommendations on food, but I can tell you what I feed Smokey. She's fed primarily a pelleted diet with some fruits/veggies. Seeds and nuts are given occasionally during training as treats.

    How often should we shower them

    • @wingsNpaws
      @wingsNpaws  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Smokey enjoys her showers once weekly but will not shower more than that. Some birds, like conures, enjoy baths almost daily. It won't hurt them.

      I would recommend going to an animal shelter rather then a pet shop.

    • @wingsNpaws
      @wingsNpaws  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would not go to a bird store, even those that specialize in birds. No matter how they market it, bird stores look to make a profit from the sale of birds so their quality of care/socialization is never priority. Smokey was from a reputable breeder, but he no longer breeds his birds.

      Kuldip Shah spray very little at first on one side in a place where your bird can run/fly away. use hot water as when it comes out it will be warm

      Perfectly love avakin
      Do you let him roam your house with you, or does he stay in his cage all the time? If he is restless, lonely, and understimulated he could be taking it out on himself. Sort of like how when people get anxious they'll pick at the their fingers or bite their nails.
