It’s been 35 years .... since I got old lol ... now in my 60s stop training back that far I decided to resurrect this Kata to see my recall I remembered most of the pattern and strikes albeit sloppy and blunt but thanks for your your video an you tube I will get this back ...modern times but this is one of the best controlled movement and breathing mind exercises I know Geoff Australia
It's doable Geoff, I've just come back training after 37 years, was doing shukokai then wado back then, now I'm learning this kata in shotakan for a grading 🙏. It's hard work lol
i love your videos so much. they have helped me in tournaments for years and now i'm competing in San Francisco in a week using this kata. thank you, Sensei, for bringing me this far.
Fantastic. This is the sort of detailed instruction that you only recieve in person from an instructor - oftentimes one that does not speak english well. A student may forget what was tought and practice incorrect movements when training on their own. You have created a great reference here that covers the subtleties that make the difference between correct form and someone just 'going through the movements'.
@ Humperdoo I think he was trying to say that firstly, you get to learn all these in such details only in a dojo where you of course have to pay for the lesson, and secondly, Paul Walker's instructions given in obviously good English are as good as what you'd get from a Japanese sensei who would likely be more fluent in Japanese than in English. If you turn it around, someone who does not understand English well would find it hard to follow what is said, even if he is white because not all whites speak English. So, for eg, an Italian whose knowledge of English is very poor would much prefer that Paul Walker could speak fluent Italian...
@ Humperdoo Firstly, you did not understand what Dirk Kingston was saying, and your knee jerk comment was "spoken like a true White male". I tried explaining to you that it was not that, and in so many words, but you still couldn't get it. Gosh! And you came back with a sarcastic reply suggesting that he or I had said that bad English was a requirement for being a Japanese karate master when neither he nor I had even remotely suggested that.
Thanks L.G. I've learned Heian Shodan to Bassai Dai. I'm currently a yellow belt and I'm trying to average 7 katas a year. I feel very comfortable at that pace and watching these excellent videos are a great help.
Thank you for all your video's i am currently learning Bassai Dai, and Tekki Shodan ready for my grading, your videos are great to watch and the commentary versions are good to follow as you explain them well. Thank you.
Great sharp clean crisp techniques with excellent hip movement! We do this kata a bit differently in TSD. I really appreciate this video and skills shown. Well done!
Thank you! I have 3 more Katas to learn for my black belt test in January, and this is one. I have to teach myself these 3 Katas, as we do not have time to get over them at all in class, and this is by far the best and easiest to follow video I have found for Bassai Dai. しし、せんせい
I am only a white belt (grading for my yellow next week) but I can already keep up with my fellow higher grades with the 1st, 2nd and 3rd (saifa) kata's. Thank you so much for your tutorial videos. I'm now just starting to learn this 4th kata. Your instructions are very clear and your comments are extremely helpful. Thank you.
Thank you sir for your time in making this video... Just what I was digging for the last week or so... Great video and your form and explanation of each move and stance was amazing... Thank you again for sharing this great art of Kata..
Excellent instructional tips, plus your form and technique are virtually perfect to. There were 1 or 2 things that i did not take notice of in my bassai dai. Thanks
this used to be my favorite kata to perform at tournaments. usually scored well when you demonstrate power and fluidity. don't know if it's still that way, it's been 20 years lol
Even if there are differences with JKA-bassai dai, this is a very very beautiful video. I would have liked some close ups with hand details, and one complete run of the kata in the end. Sure it would have been a very nice one too. Thank You. Oss !
I would have liked to be your student. Same Shotokan style I practiced at Uni in Canada. Fun tip: if you seek the Tanaka warrior glare, simply lower your chin parallel to the floor and glare. We westerners tend to raise our chins. Oos!
Excellent explanation of Bassai Dai Kata, simple and easy to understand. Correct stance, posture and smooth movements throughout sequence of Kata. Great job Sensei I look forward to seeing more of your videos. OSU!
I had to learn 5 heian, tekki 1, and 2 other 'black belt' level kata. That was over 20 years ago. Have learned many more shorin-ryu, shotokan, goju, and other style kata since, just because it is fun...and cool.
As a Shorei Goju Ryu stylist, I have to say that we run that a lot differently. When we run it though it is a little bit more relaxed so it kind of flows a little better. You were kind of tense but again I take a different style of karate and I don't know what your style calls for in this kata. I did kind of like it though. I wonder what the bunkai looks like for this.
true or faulse? at 2min 58sec...to 3min 03sec, this move was explained to me as (using a glove weapon with hooks) reaching down to the groin and "removing said groin" then drawing back to let your opponent see the removed 😮 groin"
to james black.....if you are a martial artist you will know that the same kata can be interpreted in hundreds of different ways. These clips were intended to help persons who are trying to refine their kata. What you interpret as attitude is his way of expression....you have a choice....watch the kata, take what you can from it....or do not watch it.If his expression is provoking other karatekas I would like to meet you in a ring. This simple clip provokes you......man you leave lots to be desired
It would be really great if you could make a bunkai tutorial for this kata. I have searched a lot and there are bunkai videos but they never explain all the moves and often they have different ideas about what the techniques are for. That being said, I really love this kata. It takes you from underdog to topdog over and over and the techniques reveal their Chinese heritage from leopard and lion boxing but with less speed yet greater power. It is in my opinion a disaster to teach this kata as late as at the brown belt because just like many of the more advanced katas, it contains many moves and situations that needs time and practice to sink in to the karateka and his or hers zanshin. But then again, you have to start throwing stones before lifting mountains and still the best time to plant a tree is twenty years ago. What do you think?
I would suggest to you a great book series called "Hidden Karate". There are two books - one covers the heian katas and tekki shodan. The second covers the black belt katas. I bought it as a Japanese import translated to english. It answers the questions you are looking for, and reveals how practical Shotokan really is. Ian Abernathy is pretty good too - he's rediscovered a lot of these things on his own, however it is better to go to the original (Japanese/Okinawan) source for more definite answers - rather than intelligent guesswork.
Interestingly, this is the first video of bassai dai where the sensei is lifting its knee before the first movement. On all of the JKA videos, none of the senseis start it this way.
I remember my old sensei (Ted Hedlund) told me the reason for the motion at 2:59 is to grab the attackers balls and pulling them off and at the same time hitting an attacker behind you (fist over head):)
Watch the attitude my friend. There is no reason to provoke other Karatekas. Even if you are as good as you claimed toy be, there always will be someone better than you. osss
I would say his explanation and understanding and he is definitely one of the better shotokan instructors videos on TH-cam

This guy is so comfortable to listen to, and he explains the movements and positions very well. Great video!
I think he needs to slow down when turning

"oftentimes one that does not speak english well." Ah, spoken like a true White male...

Yang chensun sorry, I didn't know bad English was a requirement for being a karate master of japanese descent.

Sensei, your videos are Very useful. Please send more.
4 months of karate and ive forgotten literally everything, even my grading kata- this is very useful for me to get back on my feet
after 4 months, you are probably (hopefully) a white belt (9th kyu) you should not be using this kata, no circumstances
