@@autumnbriggs1035 Tbf Simone had been dominating competitions before that so it make sense that they'd mainly be watching her, plus she had a lot of Brazilian fans too. All eyes were on Aly as well and no matter how many times I watch it, I never get tired of her floor routine. Truly someone that enjoys gymnastics 🤸🏼♀️ and doesn’t seem completely tainted or jaded by the sport that abused so, so many athletes in the early years of building a US program.
Were they wrong tho 😂 but yeah I thought that funny "Oh, Russia is amazing, they're gonna do so well, America's great, Romania is cool, China's awesome, Canada's happy to be in the room with all these other countries who have a chance" 😂😂😂
@@bankscloverbaywatch2578the point being made was this was the first time EVER that Canada had made a team final. That country had only a couple of times even qualified a team- usually it was just two athletes. So yea, they were very happy to be there even though their chances of a medal were outside at best.
They're like, for some people, winning is getting a gold medal, and for some people, Canada for example, their winning is just being here. That's the best they're going to get😂😂
@@VioletPiper no, the point was Canada had made the team final for the first time in an extremely long time (as in DECADES). Those girls knew they were a huge dark horse for even a bronze but just being there meant they’d get their country’s highest ever team placement. They ended up 5th after 12 hit routines… after just sneaking in 8th from qualifying - an incredible achievement.
You can be sure that it wasn’t just the USA girls that were abused at the time of this Olympics. Gymnasts in general are extremely vulnerable which is why that man got away with what he was doing for so long. Abuse of these athletes is probably a lot more common than people think but the abusers know they are in a position of authority and take advantage of it covering up what they are doing
I don't know if anyone remembers this, but in 1996 when the USA took gold for the first time, it was USA gold, Russia silver, Romania bronze. 16 years later that's how it ended for the second team gold medal.
I agree. She has great energy and just seems excited for all of them. I waited for this version to come out just to avoid the commentators on NBC. lol But Shannon was always one of my faves. Amanda Borden usually does great commentary but all time favorite female commentator is Kathy Johnson Clark.
Sometimes Kathy johnson is quite rude. I remember when Gutsu was on the floor and stumbled during the team competition. Kathy says," well if she's looking for a ten she's not going to find it on the floor" hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
I love Shannon Miller too. As an American, she and the 1996 gymnasts, The Magnificent Seven, were my heroines! I can watch this 2012 Olympics from time to time, but to be honest, the last time I really cared about gymnastics was 1996. Probably bc that's my generation, I was the same age as Kerry Strug at the time.
NBC needs to get rid of Tim Daggett and replace him with Shannon Miller. Not only is she a World and Olympic champion but she is not biased and really informative. Love her commentary.
I love how most of the Fierce Five (USA) gymnasts are on their on routines, Whether if they did Perfect Excellent or good. Furthermore, how they supporting each other with a hug and are awarded (first) Gold Medals.
I love how together this USA team is and supportive of each other they are. I didn't get that feel in 2016. I got it a little in 92. Yet in 96, 00, 04, 08, and 12 they were really friendly with each other.
Think that in 2012 the gold wasnt guaranteed sp they were more excited, 2016 they knew the gold was theirs to lose, if someone messed up they would lose as they were so dominating with Biles. It was a bit of a different atmosphere but they were supportive of each other, just not as exciting given their dominance.
Did we watch the same 2016 Olympics? Because I got the same kinda feel from them in 2016 - though both Gabby and Aly were older - and the excitement of first Olympics wasn't there.
watching this after aliya announced her retirement... bruh i’m so sad. i wish i could’ve seen her win that third olympic gold UV bar medal. i also want to see her nail an amanar again, she was and forever will be golden :)))
She very likely wouldn’t have won gold in Tokyo, Nina and Suni had 6.7 and 6.8 start values, whereas in 2018, Aliya’s last uneven bar final had a 5.8. If she was capable of doing her Rio routine in Tokyo, the bronze or silver likely would’ve been up for grabs
I may be remembering wrong, but I feel like this channel's broadcast showed a better variety than NBC (or was it ABC-I don't remember, whichever the major network is that shows the Olympics). Ofc being from the US, I'm most interested in the US girls, but I prefer to see a little bit of everybody, & sometimes I feel like the major network only shows like, 2 countries.
Rewatching in 2024 and I never noticed before that Maroney got a 9.733 execution on her vault. NO ONE gets E scores that high! That’s basically the modern equivalent of a perfect 10. Totally insane.
Noooooo!! I love all the emotion and verbal orgasms that Tim and Elfie gave. It made me feel like I was there in the arena feeling nervous with the gymnasts. I really miss Elfie. I love Nastia as a gymnast but not as a commentator. Shannon and this guy are okay but I've already dozed off twice.
Same. I keep going back and rewatching all these competitions. I'm a die hard Simone fan but it is pretty exciting watching these competitions being closer matches vs Simone and the US just dominating.
There are a lot of people out there who have said that Jordyn and Kyla only have gold medal because they were part of the team- well guess what? That’s more than those folks will ever have! An Olympic gold is a gold, no matter how it’s achieved!
Shannon Miller along with the rest of the Magnificent Seven opened the door to U.S. Team Excellence. It must make Shannon so proud to see each consecutive team after her representing the U.S. win gold.

Well, unfortunatelly, Vika always had a bad technique on her giants. If you watch any of her UB routines from the side, there is a hip angle that she never seems to correct. It's most obvious in her kips to hanstands.
It's because they always show us UB from the front so to speak, if you watch them from the sides - like the judges do, you can see the bend in arms and hips better as well as how vertical they are on handstands, which is where the deductions come from most of the time.
Everyone on that team did an amanar at least once before in their life. Even Kyla had done it (even though it was a little scary one...lol). No other team can claim that.
It's great to see 1980 Olympic All-Around and Team champion Yelena Davydova coaching the Canadians! Olympic Channel can you post complete footage of the 1976 and 1980 gymnastics competitions, men and women? It'd be great to reminisce about past Olympic icons! Thanks!

Dominic Sumner i do gymnastics and honestly when you know what you're doing and you can do it well it's really not that hard. it's a bit like tests. if you know how to do something, it's easy for you
@@shuahri I have to disagree. Lol. I was a gymnast for many years. It IS hard. I'm thankful for pullies giving is a feel for twisting elements before we actually try them. But make no mistake it is very hard. It's not just these few moments we see these girls compete. If you were a competitive gymnasts you know the 6 hour days 5 days a week. Ice baths and compmetr torture we our bodies through. Nothing easy about it. And all 4 apparatus is like a different sport in themselves. May I ask what level you are/were
Anastasia Grishina's career plummeted after that mishap, she's known as the girl who refused to do beam and mess up on floor. I am so upset we never got to see her full potential because Grishina in my opinion was one of the best gymnasts at these games. I remember watching her live and just crying for her, she deserved better
@@josiefa5852 yes, well its not a fact but she was supposed to compete beam as she was a beam specialist but I think the stress of the OLYMPICS got to her and they had aliya go on beam, which she had many wobbles but that's not grishinas fault.
I feel bad for the Chinese team going from a gold team medal to no medal at all but they just weren’t strong enough. In 2008 they had someone to carry them in those areas they were weak but now they don’t. It showed how much Cheng Fei really held up the team in Beijing
They were all mostly underage when they won that Gold. (Same thing in the 2000 Sydney Olympics, which disqualified their bronze medal).Prepubescent girls have an advantage over ones who've hit puberty. Look at how Nadia was when she was 13/14 years old vs 17/18 years old. That's why China cheats. But cheating catches up with you. Now that the Chinese gymnasts are the appropriate ages and gymnastics is more power centered, they can't deliver! They should have used all that energy to evolve with the changes in gymnastics vs cheating.
I think Cheng Fei was so over scored in Beijing. Not to mention the fact that the Americans couldn’t catch a break by the end and were making major mistakes everywhere. Plus, the Chinese gymnasts were so young. There is such a difference and advantage to using young gymnasts. Their injury rate is much lower and they are a lot less cautious with their routines. Gymnasts like Victoria Komova, Rebecca Bross, and Katelyn Ohashi were all incredible as juniors but with age and injury they lost talent. Yes, many gymnasts get better with age but their is a huge advantage to using young gymnasts.
If the Chinese team was under age in Bejing, don't you think their medal would have been taken away? With all of the age controversy in the past, do you guys REALLY think that China would actually be stupid enough to risk being stripped of medals when the Olympics is in THEIR country? They won fair and square, they were PHENOMENAL. Time to get over it. Americans made too many mistakes. Stop crying.
2016 was even more amazing. Never in the history of womens gymnastics has an Olympic team qualified a full 8 points above second place and won by almost as much. That was crazy insane
It’s true GB did not win a medal. But around the world people saw what a great nation they were in the way they treated all the athletes. Their friendliness and sportsmanship shown like a light when they cheered for the excellence they saw in the hard won performances from youth representing the best from each country. I kept hoping GB would win a medal. Being the host country calls for a lot from a nation. It isn’t just their sports teams that have to keep smiling in the face of insurmountable odds. Everyone hopes for the best. When the dust settles you know the best won in that moment. The future always gives you another chance to try.
@@bluepanther1013 Exactly what I was trying to convey--thats a really high execution score because especially in today's CoP, we see girls who compete a very sound routine with E-scores in the 7s
I would imagine the gymnast gets SOME SAY on what the choreography will be that they are going to perform....? I doubt any of them would perform a routine which they HATED every part of?! Or at least, they certainly couldn't PERFORM the routine well if they secretly despised their choreography, right?! Lol. I'm sure they have SOME input!!!
I understand it’s hard to lose a medal you thought you could get but I wish Russia would just be a little more happy that they got a medal. They had a lot of issues falls stumbles wobbles and they’re lucky to have a medal in the first place specially a silver one. Teams like Canada and Great Britain were happy just to compete and imagine how much they would love a medal. I think the team was just being a little selfish when they should be happy they got a medal.
Yes, so imagine how well they could have done if they hadn't had all those falls. The "team" wasn't upset, the athletes were upset because all of them had made very costly mistakes--Grishina and Afanaseva had major falls, Komova got a huge deduction for taking huge steps out of bounds on her beam dismount, and Mustafina couldn't stick her floor landings. Each one had let her team down. It's a lot easier to take a loss when it comes down to tenths; when you know you might have won if you hadn't made that giant mistake it really stings. Britain and Canada would definitely love a medal, but the teams simply aren't at the level of the US and Russia. They came into the team final and executed clean routines, with consistently lower scores, but they were proud to bring their countries into the spotlight. Every athlete/team goes into the Olympics with different expectations. Canada has never made a team final; Britain had the entire country watching them. The goal was making the team final and performing as well as they possibly could. Russia, on the other hand, has fallen since the Soviet days, not even medalling in 2008. 2012 was supposed to be a big year, with Komova as the runner-up in 2011, Aliya with her surprising recovery from an ACL tear, Afanasyeva as the returning veteran, _and_ Paseka as a specialist. Grishina was their up-and-coming. So yeah, it's not quite enough to say they should be "happy" to medal, when all of them made significant mistakes and completely gave away the gold. I suppose they should be happy to medal when they made so many mistakes, but if they were happy and smiling after falling all over the place you'd probably say they were entitled, knowing they'd still medal despite the deductions.

@@silverleopardcat it's sad that those tenths that brought them the silver turned to what? 7 or 8 FULL POINTS by the time Rio came around. And Romania not even qualifying a team? Just heartbreaking. I'm American so of course I am so proud of these girls...but I've also been around a long time and this sport is not the same without that head-to-head competition and excitement. Rio has to be THE most boring Olympics I've ever seen. The only surprise was beam finals. I want Russia to maintain their beautiful balletic style but increase their difficulty, work on conditioning and consistency (conditioning definitely needs attention). And Romania? Sigh... denisa is awesome! And I know they have some juniors moving up...crossing my fingers they are able not only qualify a whole team, but keep up with USA, RUSSIA, CHINA and now Brazil, Japan, the UK and Canada are working their up there as well.

Everyone from team China that presented before her used 2 hands Sui: Well, since I’m going to be original, I’m going to use 1 hand and wave at the audience.
They honestly came back in Rio as well. They were considered a possible contender for bronze, expected to battle with Great Britain and others for the medal… and won silver because they stayed steady and focused while others had problems.
johaira contreras i was actually talking about execution score, not the difficulty score. Sui Lu's routine deserved 9.00+ execution score, while Larissa with wobbles and balance checks here and there, got a higher execution scores than Sui Lu's.
KwonYuriMyLover she stays in the squat position for way too long after every skill, which is a deduction because the judges want to see you have complete control and keep moving through every skill. staying in the squat position means you’re doubting yourself and not moving through your routine. also it messes w the rhythm which is a deduction

I love that Shannon miller is a announcer she tells what moves are being sone and enjoys every gymnast that performs
Truly someone that enjoys gymnastics 🤸🏼♀️ and doesn’t seem completely tainted or jaded by the sport that abused so, so many athletes in the early years of building a US program.

Were they wrong tho 😂 but yeah I thought that funny
"Oh, Russia is amazing, they're gonna do so well, America's great, Romania is cool, China's awesome, Canada's happy to be in the room with all these other countries who have a chance" 😂😂😂

What were they going through 😅
@@khadija1390 sexually abused by the (now former) USA gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar
Josephine F oh :(
You can be sure that it wasn’t just the USA girls that were abused at the time of this Olympics. Gymnasts in general are extremely vulnerable which is why that man got away with what he was doing for so long. Abuse of these athletes is probably a lot more common than people think but the abusers know they are in a position of authority and take advantage of it covering up what they are doing
@Lazy Hummingbird no, he is not Asian and was a doctor not a coach
I don't know if anyone remembers this, but in 1996 when the USA took gold for the first time, it was USA gold, Russia silver, Romania bronze. 16 years later that's how it ended for the second team gold medal.

Love the Lady commentating shes just awesome lol :)
She is a decorated American gymnast Shannon Miller.
Yes i Know who she is Mate just saying I love her energy can see she really loves gymnastics :)
Tim Daggett is an Olympic gold medalist too…

Shannon, your performance in both Olympic teams you were on were inspirational!!
It’s the 1st time I watched this til the end so I noticed things:
1. That podium is too narrow
2. Gabby grew a lot from 2012 to 2016 wow
these girls dedicate their lives to the sport please stop pushing the cameras into their faces when their team messes up, come on
I love how together this USA team is and supportive of each other they are. I didn't get that feel in 2016. I got it a little in 92. Yet in 96, 00, 04, 08, and 12 they were really friendly with each other.
You need to watch the 2016 Olympics again. Aly was hugging Simone when they were competing against each other.
I watched it live back in 2012 and have watched so many times over since then.
watching this after aliya announced her retirement... bruh i’m so sad. i wish i could’ve seen her win that third olympic gold UV bar medal. i also want to see her nail an amanar again, she was and forever will be golden :)))

Someone tell me how Vika Komova only got a 8,7 in her execution score on bars. I know she missed a few handstands but, everything else was FLAWLESS
Austin Garrett i agree, but handstanddeduction can be much.
she bends her arms on lots of skills which adds up really quickly. plus the missed handstands as well
Austin Garrett poor giant technique
Well, unfortunatelly, Vika always had a bad technique on her giants. If you watch any of her UB routines from the side, there is a hip angle that she never seems to correct. It's most obvious in her kips to hanstands.
It's because they always show us UB from the front so to speak, if you watch them from the sides - like the judges do, you can see the bend in arms and hips better as well as how vertical they are on handstands, which is where the deductions come from most of the time.
United States of amanar

Anastasia Grishina's career plummeted after that mishap, she's known as the girl who refused to do beam and mess up on floor.
Good there cheats
I dont feel bad at all there cheats.
GO USA!!!!!!!! I am still amazed even though its 2018
2016 was even more amazing. Never in the history of womens gymnastics has an Olympic team qualified a full 8 points above second place and won by almost as much. That was crazy insane
2023 here!
Can we please just take a second to talk about the fact that Afanasyeva had an E-score of 8.233 with a FALL?
I think a fall is a .5 deduction. Most of her routine was executed well. She most likely had an E-score of at least 8.800.
@@bluepanther1013 In these games a fall was a full 1.0
@@catsratch3 She probably had a 9.233 execution score.

Also I think Ruby Harrold was on bars, so the GB fans were loud.
@@seer1623 She doesn't choose the choreography.
I assume they use moves and tumbling passes that they’re good at and can perform well
That girl from Romania Diana Laura looked like she was being fast forwarded she goes so fast

Japans leos are insanely beautiful.
2023 still watching 🤩

@@rhea6583 took about 5 minutes, mostly stream-of-consciousness. I write on some other websites that tend to expect longer answers, so it's not difficult when you're used to it.
Bella Silver Well you must have had a lot of practice. Even if I did try to write that, it would take me around 2 hours 😂

They honestly came back in Rio as well. They were considered a possible contender for bronze, expected to battle with Great Britain and others for the medal… and won silver because they stayed steady and focused while others had problems.
wait, how did Sui Lu's near perfect beam routine has lower E-score than Larissa's with few wobbles in hers.
KwonYuriMyLover I think they also could Technical errors and the level of difficulty
johaira contreras i was actually talking about execution score, not the difficulty score. Sui Lu's routine deserved 9.00+ execution score, while Larissa with wobbles and balance checks here and there, got a higher execution scores than Sui Lu's.
I was thinking the exact same thing! You're right, i love them both but Sui Lu's execution was better than Larissa's. Something's up with those judges
I guess bodyshape in splitjumps
KwonYuriMyLover she stays in the squat position for way too long after every skill, which is a deduction because the judges want to see you have complete control and keep moving through every skill. staying in the squat position means you’re doubting yourself and not moving through your routine. also it messes w the rhythm which is a deduction
