- Adam Savage is back at Bay Area Maker Faire to give his Sunday Sermon! This year, Adam connects the dots between the Wright brothers first flight over a hundred years ago to the Greek myth of Icarus and how he personally relates to those stories of aviation, engineering, and optimism.

Thanks for watching!
Adam’s enthusiasm is definitely infectious❣️
Ain't it, though?! I've said that very thing on multiple occasions. 🍻
Doesn't matter the topic, or even how interested YOU are in it... _His_ fascination becomes *_your_* fascination!
I wish our world was run by people like Adam... we need more empathy, compassion, intelligence, and desire to understand others and ourselves!
Damn accurate sentiments.
For all those reasons, but also because he isn't perfect, he knows he isn't, has admitted he isn't, and all of that is what makes him perfect for the job. 😊
Oh if only all the politicians were Adam and Jamie (for an opposing view if nothing else). The world would run so much better...
An interesting take off of this idea would be the wonderful chaos Adam would bring as in the way he tells this story. The chaos would intertwine and eventually come together but be a marvelous trail. But in the trail everyone would feel love for the wonder each follower brings along. He is one of a kind.
Another amazing speech. Having those epiphanies about stories and understanding your experiences is something we all go through. And while it is hard to teach sharing our experiences and understanding does help.
Man, that was undoubtedly.....at this moment...the single coolest talk on this platform. Thank you so much!
Adam casually both educating and corrupting the youths. 🤣🤣
He is corrupting the youths as Socrates did 😉
EDIT: lets call it "inspiration" which is more accurate and better
I gotta admit it, "if it's worth doing, it's worth overdoing." corrupted me in so many good ways, with some risks taken.
(I don't know if the motto was originated from Adam, Jamie or the producers)
Just like Socrates
I was there for this, and I laughed (especially at the cursing!), I cried (I'm a dad), and I learned. I and my 2 kids left feeling inspired and hopeful for the future. What an amazing talk. Thank you so much, Adam.
I was 23 when Mythbusters aired for the first time. I watched every single episode until its eventual cancelation in 2018. I just started rewatching the series a couple of months ago. It was and will forever be one of my favorite TV series of all time. Thank you for the education and entertainment that you and Jamie gifted to us all. You continue to make stellar content that both educates and entertains on your current channel that I watch on an almost daily basis. I've learned so much from you. Thank you for everything. Long time fan.
Adam, what a wonderful Sunday Sermon. A great venue and terrific tales. Thanx for sharing. 💙🌻💙
A footnote to Adam's story: When France was celebrating the anniversary of the Wright's airplane's arrival in France, they needed an airplane. Kermit Weeks (Fantasy of Flight) had a replica, and he agreed to ship it to France for this event. And it got damaged in transit like the original! I hadn't realized there was this story about the original airplane being damaged in transit... (There was a video about it on Kermit's channel.)
Adam is the same speaking live apparently
This what happens when you're genuine and unabashedly you!
I love it 😂
I remember writing a report in fifth grade on the the Wright brothers and making a model flyer out of toothpicks and paper. They are such amazing people.
I also am writing a short story that asks what happened to Icarus had he survived his fall, trying to examine that father-son relationship from the POV of someone who feels like he fell short in that regard, but wants to be better.
Thanks Adam for sharing what you’ve been studying. It’s good to know we’ve covered similar ground, and I like the way you find connections between them, yourself, and others.
What a skill you have. To be engaging, funny, and interesting without a script. Pure genius.
Greek mythology being absurd before absurdity was a philosophical thing is very meta
Its an old joke that the Greeks are always sat there waiting for the rest of us to catch up intellectually.
Beautiful narration. This video is inspiring. I'll keep in mind to research more into the Wright brothers. And greek mythology too!
Shout out to the camera person and the audio people
The book is fantastic. David McCullough - The Wright Brothers.
Your speeches are truly timeless collections of insight, and wisdom. Thankyou for Being in our lives Mr. Savage!
Thank you soo much for this amazing video!!! Soo great one!
Thank you Adam from a struggling step dad and novice creator. This makes a lot of relevant sense to my life and relationship.
Thank you Tested for sharing this mesmerizing talk done by Adam.
was great to witness this live. 😍
Adam Savage: Always a win. Adam Savage citing the myth of Icarus and Daedalus: Seriously, you were already a win.....
This is just so good, absolutely enjoyed every moment of the talk.
Fantastic speech. Hugely enjoyable. I honestly think you could make a great soap opera out of Greek Mythology.
Love this video, we need more
“To invent an airplane is nothing. To build one is something. But to fly is everything.” So spoke Ferdinand Ferber at Otto Lilienthal's funeral.
And we know what killed olde Otto, don't we....

Well YT keeps removing my comment, so the non-humorous and heartwarming version is:
Prior to the 17min mark, I had my own epiphany about the Icarus story, and I shared it. With the sentiment of _"not sure if anyone else has felt this way about it"..._
Below is the Edit I was wanting to add to it... _(which is how I found out the automoderation system removed my comment for reasons unknown)_
= = = = =
😶 _Join me, in this play-by-play recounting of my mind. *freaking. EXPLODING!* 😳
17:09 _"Nooo waaaay..."_
17:36 _"No, seriously... do NOT tell me he is going to describe EXACTLY what I just now realized?!_ 😦"
18:07 *_*blink... blink-blink*_*
18:56 _"Surely..."_
19:02 _aaaaaand_ 🤯!
= = = = =
Adam's epiphany and my epiphany were *_100% identical_* and the fact I had it on a video where he's explaining his same experience... the level of coincidence here is nearing the degree of being beyond-belief!!!
It might be the biggest mind-blown moments of my 41 years, but if not, it's DEFINITELY top 3! (shame YT had to shit on it 😞)
Adam, MB kept me sane while I was in a wwasp program. Thank you for all you do.
So many thoughts on this talk. In terms of the Icarus and Daedalus story and understanding that as a parent...I feel like my dad would understand it, and the birth-giver would not (You can tell how I feel about her given that I don't give her any other title). That notion of "you can lead them to some extent by example, but you cannot lead them forever"...
Yeah, I wish more people understood that.
Anyways! I also agree with making being the outlet for which we feel like we have control. It's really true. I may not be able to control how well my health or school or anything else is going, but at least I can control the fit of my knitted socks. And that makes things feel a little better.
For those asking about the book, I believe it's The Wright Brothers by David McCullough
Have to say that I really like Adam's ability to communicate. Especially a story like this where he can lead you down an interesting path and then suddenly give you the moral and you get that "Oh, yeah." moment. As a dad, it also brought to mind the sheer gravity of a motto I've had for a while, and what I might have to look forward to in the coming years.
I can tell you not to stick that fork into the electric socket.
I can inform you of why you shouldn't stick that fork into the electric socket.
I can explain to you everything that would happen if you stick that fork into the electric socket.
But some knowledge just needs to be earned.
I wish he had all of them up. He gave a sermon in San Mateo that changed my life. I was inspired to learn how to make films. Now, I am a filmmaker, and literally living my dreams. Thank you Adam!
Also, ColinMcKenzie, a filmmaker in New Zealand, proved NZ inventor Richard Pearse was the really the first person to fly in a plane.
The best stories have more than one lesson. :)
Nice talk though! Always fun to gain new insights into old stories, to have someone else do the heavy lifting and curate the extra info.
No doubt in Adam's mind, the pseudonyms "Thing 1" and "Thing 2" refer to specific individuals, but it is amusing to hear him _correct_ himself in front of the audience, as if any of us would know the difference.
A little over a decade ago my family was in the Outer Banks on vacation and we visited the Wright Brothers Memorial at Kitty Hawk. At the base of the monument is a bronze door that leads inside, for maintenance, and it has the scene of Icarus' fall on it. My son was 8 at the time so I told him the tale of the myth and when I finished then turned around there was a crowd of people standing behind us. Some of them clapped and several asked if I was a tour guide. Nope, just remembering what I learned in school.
Brilliant!
I love this.
Just watched you on the Morning Show.
Adam Savage is coming to Comic Con Australia next month. Yay🎉🎉🎉🎉
One parallel that Adam may be interested in: Orville and Wilbur didn't fall, and they didn't get separated. Why? Because they were *both* the young man, and instead of one trying to urge the other onto his predetermined path, they were building a path *together* with their youth and ingenuity.
Wow. Very interesting talk. Thanks Adam. It simply never occurred to me that the Wright brothers had actively searched out a place to fly from - l've always just assumed they were FROM Kitty Hawk. In my defence l'm from Aotearoa/ New Zealand so, l like to think l have some excuse for not knowing. 😊 And yes, as Adam says, we also like to think one of our guys flew first - sadly not documented and Patent not applied for until 1906. From Te Ara - the encyclopedia of New Zealand. ...
"Early aviator Richard Pearse achieved folk hero status in New Zealand, and his fame is celebrated in this stamp produced in 1990. In the early 1900s Pearse constructed a flying machine, and briefly achieved flight sometime during 1902-1904. The record for the first sustained flight, however, was claimed by the American brothers Wilbur and Orville Wright in 1903."
"In order to take out a patent on a work it must be described accurately. This drawing (unable to post a photo) was part of the 1906 patent application by aviation pioneer Richard Pearse. After several years of building aircraft at his South Canterbury farm, Pearse was reported to have managed sustained flight in 1903. However, in the US the Wright brothers had patented their aircraft two months earlier than Pearse."
There are several other inventors reported to have built a motorized flying apparatuses before brothers Wright. But likely a main difference is that the Wright made an engineer science of the principles of steering something that can fly, and not only to botch something together to try it out and so potentially die by the resulting crash landing. (see Wikipedia "Claims to the first powered flight")
@@AerialTheShamen Yes. I think you're probably right.
not to be overtly pedantic, but I believe Adam got his quotes mixed up since, the Diary entry he cites sounds very similar to Teddy Roosevelts "the light has gone out of my life" entry when his wife and mother died on the same day.
Milton Wright (Wilber & Orvilles father) did have a similarly terse entry in his own diary on the subject. "A short life, full of consequences. An unfailing intellect, imperturbable temper, great self reliance and as great modesty"
Great video sir
Beautiful, well done
im here for the journey
Adam is a legend
As Icarus flew close to the sun and things began to melt, Daedalus said "Loop before you leak, son." Icarus replied "It's a matter ol a pinion, dad!" From a short sci-fi story whose author and title I have forgotten.
Informative and very interesting.
Adam I’m glad I subscribed

So Damn Good Talk!
Daedalus made a great messed-up work for Pasiphaë (her wooden cow costume) and was rewarded with another messed-up work for Minos (his labyrinth).
So you can have work even if it is messed-up as long as you are competent.
Love, love, love
😢of wonder and joy.
you're a monster for ended it like that 😢❤🔥
Thanks
Wowee! The dancing dragon is one of our neighbors!
"Thursday, May 30, 1912: A wind, southwest, light, but shifting. Dull and threatening. No flight today. W. departed."
- Orville's diary entry on the day his brother passed away from typhoid fever
When the world seems like its in a creative glut everywhere you turn, this is the kind of thing that gets your motor goin.
I was also having a good laugh with the vision of '18th century bicycles'. I suspect the paddle wheel Oceana model was a big hit with the Royal Navy.
Add: On the cursing bit, my mother had a knack for blurbing electric with animated words at timely moments, of which of course I had to inquire about. One of her jewels on choice words in moments of need, "There's no such thing as a bad word, but some are more inappropriate outside of good company."
Me, it's a cheap exclamation mark where such punctuation is needed. 😁
I never considered before that the Wright Flyer was essentially a box kite.
3:48 Hi Norm!
Do Thing One and Thing Two know which Thing they are?
The kid saying thank you for the apology 😂
Sweet
MAN, what a powerhouse of oratory, to be able to do all that without notes and return from tangents to the main point without floundering too much... Narrating videos for the Internet helps hone that skill, I guess! Spend a lotta time talking, and you'll get better at talking, ha, who'd've thunk it :)
Huh, I was today years old when I learned the minotaur had a name.
Rambling genius
What is the book's name????? Sounds SUPER. Or that could be just your enthusiasm but I still want to read it/ learn more about Wright family.
We have no notes for you either Adam.
Always thought I knew Asterion from somewhere.
Daedelus didn't fail. Icarus did fail though, because he didn't listen to his dad. (Incidentally, my family on my dad's side is from Icaria. I have only been there once so far.)
THE WRIGHT BROTHERS BUILT THE PLANE ON A PIRATE COVE?!! why I'm learning this just now
and i foolishly thought Icarus' Flight was about the importance of RTFM
Is that an SE in your pocket or are you just happy to meet me?
I have an unrelated query, hope Adam or somebody else here will know the answer. In Episode I Anakin gives to Padme the Japor snippet and says that it made of japor ivory wood. I wander from what exactly was this prop made of. I mean was that a bone of some sort or some type of wood. I wonder what that material was exactly
Icarus is a warning of egomania, not enthusiasm. If you don't have humility to learn from your mistakes you are Icarus, Hitler, Starlin. If you work hard and learn from mistakes and are humble, this balance is of good leadership and success.
❤🔥King of Kings❤🔥
Name of Wright Brothers Biography?
Did anyone catch what the person in the front row said in response to the apology for cursing at around 19 minutes?
Thank you
That story is about a daylight Taurid Meteor Stream Superbolide. The MinoTAUR's name means Star. There is more, The Bull symbol is about the space debris from The Constellation of Taurus which is in the Ocean of Space. If one reads enough Mythology it is certain that they equated Sea, Ocean, Rivers, and other Water words for the Sky and beyond, The Deep is UP, not down. Etc....... The stories survive because everyone has a different take on the meaning that is entertaining, but all along it is carrying an encoded message, which is about our newest visitor, The Taurid Meteor Stream, which is UNIVERSAL in all anciently derived Traditions, Mythology, and Religions. It is shown in cave art to Gobekli Tepe to Tauroctony and is still commemorated today as The Halloween fireballs. Plus, The Aldebaran Colored Heifer.
I got turned off by the Wright brothers stuff. Did he get as far as the patent wars?
Some times the young don't do as they are told.
FYI opinion: cursing is a skill knowing when and under which context it can be acceptable. Also which words are considered unacceptable except under rare circumstances. Those that resort to frivolous vulgarity are frequently the immature and are looking to shock the audience. They are usually poorly educated. You use language to inform and persuade. If it fails to do this do not use it. Thank you
I like to say that sometimes a grown man needs to use his big boy words to get his adult point across.
"It was a two day sailboat ride from the nearest place you could get a train to" - sounds like Heaven. "They were descended from shipwrecked sailors". LOL wow
❤❤❤👏👏👏👏👏👏🎉
Bravo!!
hey whats going on with mythbusters? i looked on max and discovery and they deleted a bunch of mythbusters episodes
Who's that handsome Asian guy in the background taking pictures 😍😍
M: Myasian?
Y: No, Eurasian.
M: That's what I _said!_
people don't want good advice, they just want to hear that the decision they are making is correct. they will fight tooth and nail to be dumb.
"Icarus' Flight".
Dadilus succeeded
Icarus failed
Great story Adam, but I have to disagree with you on cursing. Cursing in anger only makes everyone more angry. Cursing in conversation only make one sound dumber. I feel cursing only is appropriate in a punchline of a joke.
Dude! I just watched this just this week. Thank you for all you share, your reflections, your knowledge, and your experiences.

=D
Hey, what’s wrong with Icarus wanting to get high?
Adam: Annoyed they accomplished flight on their 2nd try.
Me: _"I can't wait to hear how he feels about SpaceX catching Super Heavy on the _*_FIRST_*_ try!"_
😅
Great explanation of Icarus and parenting. You made a mistake it’s not 18th century it was the nineteenth century then it went into the twentieth century that means 1800’s is the 19th century 1900+ is the 200th. Century we are now in the 21st century. The bicycle was first invented 1817 patented in 1818. The wright broths invented plane in 1903 17yrs after the car was invented
Pontificate.... and do it "incessantly ".... cracks me up how boring this guy is
So son, what did you learn from Adams little talk? Well dad I learned that fox news viewers are saying that flying in a Boeing jet to close to the sun will melt the wings off.
There's always someone making things unnecessarily political and divisive.
@@Riley_Mundt Thank you
