      I also pick up a lot of information from just trying stuff like this - stuff I rarely do and so making these videos has made me a better blacksmith. Thanks

    I remember that problem when it sounded like your mic was in a fish tank, well done to the guy who pointed you in the right direction! As for mild steel, you don’t need a hardened point to invade and take over an entire country, ask king Harold!

      There are different skills involved in making this and it's a good project for a beginner or someone like me who has been blacksmithing for a while but never tried such a project. Good luck in your blacksmithing. Thanks.

    I would suggest making a deeper offset to begin with and flare the socket end more before rolling it.

    Your so very correct Glen. it funny, well quit arrogant when people say that's crooked or any other negative comment about someones art when the object they are complaining about will kill them just as well as a perfect flawless one. Maybe even sooner since one didn't spend as much time on making it. People have obvious negative comments on my imperfect stone flint Knapped points I made.
    I love your the spear point. I think very well made for the first effort.

    I've watched this video several times. Making the socket for a wooden handle is probably one of the most practical things an early blacksmith could have done to make hand implements. Could you try making a garden hoe some time? ...Dave

    How do you avoid fishmouthing the end? I've tried tapering shapes like that and I end up curling the corners in.

    • @foggy7595
      @foggy7595 ปีที่แล้ว

      Get it HOT and hit it HARD. Square, octagon, round. Also helps if you put a short taper on the end before drawing out a longer taper, gives the material somewhere else to go, ends up fattening back up instead of rolling over into fishmouth.

    Are you going to make a video of you taking down a buffalo? While that would *CERTAINLY* be a video worth watching, I hope you'll forge a few more it case your aim is off with the first throw.

    • @bryanjordan8876
      @bryanjordan8876 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think in another video he said something about a lack of work space and it being the optimal setup due to that and the style of work he does. It makes the work look at lot easier than it is when he is all relaxed and sitting though lol.

    • @gstongs
      @gstongs  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Virginia. Bryan is correct in that standing in my limited workspace wasn't ideal. I couldn't move around my tools so I set it up where I'm seated and move my tools around me. I've gotten so used to sitting and forging that I think I can't go back to standing, even when I am in a bigger shop. And working this way has helped alleviate some aches and pains. But if you sit while blacksmithing, you really have to be alert and take extra precaution. This project turned out OK but I want to give it another go and see what improvements I can make. Glad to see you're still around... Thanks.

    Nice one, but I think the whole thing is a bit too thick, the socket could have been bigger and the tip longer.
    But nice anyways, and when you use mild steel you probably should keep things massive as you did.

    • @gstongs
      @gstongs  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Edgar, It's too thick for sure. And as mentored, the proportions (tip to socket) are off. I will give this another go soon and see if I can make improvements. Thanks.

    Looks great Glen,
    Yesterday I had a friend ask me to make him a wood working chisel/slick

      Ryan, The basics for a socketed woodworking chisel are definitely in this project. I want to try this again (mainly socket) and in fact, also want to make a socketed woodworking chisel. I would have thought using the anvil horn to shape the socket would have worked well. Also would a rounded end chisel help to angle the spear edges and reduce cold working time? I know you dislike cold working

    • @gstongs
      @gstongs  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the horn and perhaps chisel would be useful for sockets and the edges respectively. You know me, I definitely dislike most cold work. Thanks.

      Wonder if u could attach it to a small pole with a rope attached to the end and hit a fish with it?

    • @gstongs
      @gstongs  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Russell, There's not much hunting here unless it occurs in aboriginal villages. Most wild game here has long since been killed off which is really a shame. In nature is the salvation of the world but so much of this place is so far removed from the natural world... The only "game" I could hunt with this here is maybe sewer rats and flying roaches... Anyway, I will give this another go and see if I can make improvements. Thanks.

    • @camelcitytattooshopp

      Tony Walker. Spear of destiny... Story goes Longinus a roman century was ordered to in sure the life has left the Christ or Yeshua by stabbing the crucified man with his lance drenching the man and spear in the blood of the son of God healing him of age onset blindness and placing that point into mythic proportions sought after by power hungry fools as hitler and the like. Now most modern destiny i hear of these days are on stage three twirling around a brass pole as for yours it may be the later.
