  • In 1941 the Mandil family fled from their native Yugoslavia to Kosovo. In 1942 they arrived in Albania and settled in Tirana. After the German occupation Refik Veseli took the family to his parent's village, where they were hidden until liberation. After the war the Mandils immigrated to Israel. The Veseli family were the first Albanians to be recognized as Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem.

    RIP Gavra.
Gavra Mandil was a great inspiration in my life as his wife Naomi Mandil and the rest of the family. they brought me into their home 26 years ago when I was just 16 years old and gave me a safe place to be and grow with their family in Israel when my own family fell apart and me and my brothers and sister were basically alone. I cannot explain the impact this had on my life. without those good people I don't know where I would have gotten the strength and understanding of the world and the knowledge that there are great compassionate people somewhere, because all I knew was the opposite. So here is Gavra telling a little bit of his family story survival during the holocaust and I am grateful for him and his family for saving me and bringing happy moments into my world. I will always remember and love you forever. --Vered
