Anyone can kill the devil; that’s why they always make teens the vampire slayers, the magical girls. But some kids can’t even get that right; and that’s why meangirl Neptune, tomboy Jupiter, and shy shy Venus have to endure one more week of summer camp and each other, singing boring songs about jesus, doing busywork for adults, and hoping god’s radio can’t hear them.
Before they can leave the summer scouts, they’ve got to spend twelve hours in the loneliest cabin in the woods and wait for the devil to come and live through the night--or not. You know.

    Venus: VoiceQuills / voicequills
    Neptune: Skylarxene / skylarxene
    Jupiter: Balsam

God (Devil?), the yellow ending is so fucking terrifying to me. Like getting to be free for a moment, then having it stripped away and forced to live knowing exactly what you’ll never have, just fuckkkkk.
It’s honestly a little draining when people in the WKTD fandom just write off Venus in favor of their traditional “sad cis girl” ship,” like they just missed the entire point of that part of the game.

Man, that second paragraph... isn't just writing the third person off and ignoring them what turns these kids into devils in the first place??

All 3 of these characters are beautifully complex i don't understand how people can write off any of them without having the entire point of the game have flown over their head

Something that I’ve realized in a lot of queer female media is that men are always terrible and the ones that aren’t are always some form of trans, which is why Venus’ role in this is insufferable she’s the only tolerable “man” in the story and it turns out she is a she and not a he. That as a queer man I get next to no representation written by other queer men irks me, almost all queer content is written by some form of afab or trans-fem and the content for gay men that do exist are written by fujoshis who likely aren’t even queer in the first place.
Gay trans man content does not work as gay cis man content we are different and deserve our own individual representation. The point is that the fact that Venus represents a problem I have with queer media is that men are only okay if they decide to become women or were women that chose to be men there is no content for me and my people in a community that’s all about representation, the fact that somehow official media has given me better representation than the queer spaces designed around representation is fu*king appalling and I’m sick of it 😒

It's kinda scary that if a cishet person played this, they might miss the nuance and think that the ending that is basically an allegory for forcible detransition is the GOOD ending

Jupiter's rubber band is actually a crude aversion therapy thing - you're supposed to snap it painfully against your wrist whenever you catch yourself having a "wrong" thought, training yourself to dislike and avoid them. Given the contexts in which she does it, she's likely to have had some incredibly toxic "professional" therapy help at some point.

I did think the voice sounded different than the one in "Pathologic". I am really happy that you managed to find a closer you, one More true to yourself. It couldnt have been easy. And while this will likely mean nothing from a stranger from the Internet: be proud that you managed to realise something in yourself and commit to it

I'm a speech pathologist and listening to folk change their voices through effort and training always makes me want to dive into the voice specialty. Especially when I hear people obviously taking care to not hurt themselves in the process. Sul's voice before and now were both lovely and comfortable, but there is an unmistakable authenticity and perhaps even joy to it that wasn't there before, and it makes me deeply happy.

it really is crazy to me how many of the people i watch or stumble across end up being trans. idk if me being trans makes me appreciate trans content? (even closeted) or like i just remember them more because im trans, and transess being a hot button topic is helping expose people to the concept and figure out who they are.
(the voice change is a gender thing right? id feel very stupid otherwise)

    • @jimmothywells6618
      @jimmothywells6618 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@profeseurchemical I was hoping, and still am, that someone with first hand experience will comment on this,(not trolls) as I am a cis he/him,
but as I understand it, gender confirmation(a wide umbrella) is unique to each person and dysphoria can be a significant part of it or not. For clinicians, it's about listening to each person and working to achieve whatever needs are healthy and achievable. We all modulate our voices pitch and tone for our conversation partners and environments but there's a range we can work with and training to safely reach the desired self voice.
After a voice class testing to determine my fundamental frequency "structurally natural pitch" I was not terribly surprised that I was affecting a near unhealthily artificial deep voice with professional peers.

I think I related strongest to the descriptions of Venus and Jupiter, with both mirroring my own lived experiences. Though I don't identify as trans, and instead feel quite comfortable in my gender at birth, I did feel the same pressures that Venus does. The constant apologizing for my existence being a big one - the eternal disappointment in my family and their expectations as well as the punishing isolation as a result. Jupiter being unable to allow herself to be kind to herself and just embodying self loathing so intensely was also a surprising similarity. Her almost martyr like desire to suffer for the perceived sins of her existence. I suppose when you've lived through that sort of upbringing, it wouldn't be uncommon to have traits of those characters.
Your analysis and dive into this was really fascinating to me, and I found the way you explained different sequences to be very cerebral. I think my favorite moment came at the end where you said "There is no happiness in assimilation, no joy in self denial. There is no redemption in the eyes of an unforgiving God. There is only salvation in self acceptance, and between God and the Devil, I know which one would welcome me with open arms." This resonates with me significantly, and I really appreciate that you put into words these feeling.
The self actualization that comes with the acceptance of who you are is one of those transformative moments that I appreciated seeing visualized in the game. The acceptance of the devil within - the rejection of the falseness of the social construct - leading into a rebirth that was at first malformed in isolation but refined into something beautiful in community hearkens to that need in a broader sense too within queer spaces.
SO many of us struggle to find anything or anyone to relate to, and when we do, it is often times abusive itself. Generation trauma among queer people is a thing, and with so many of our spaces consumed by the privilege of status and social hierarchy it is a challenge to build genuine relationships with our peers. Tie that with the overwhelming nature of the crises that we face as a collective people and it makes moments like the ending of this game all the more precious, all the more necessary.
You mentioned this in the KOTOR 2 video, but I feel it bears repeating - trauma bonding as a result of what has happened to us results in unhealthy cycles in relationships, and at first that was what I thought this game was going to be about. But instead, its a fascinating transformation of this very real pain into something of a liberation through group apotheosis. Perhaps, as people within and without our spaces continue to negotiate our reality, such a thing can come to pass?
I have greatly enjoyed your content, and deeply appreciate your keen eye. Thank you for being brave and for sharing your thoughts on these games.

As a queer girl myself I extremely enjoyed this video. The topic, the execution, the symbolism and the atmosphere of the video and the game felt familiar. Unfortunately.
Hearing your voice, - these happy little bells, - and how you described the transformation of Venus gave me hope again for the future of one of my best friend.
We live in Hungary, and catholicism is as strong as ever here. We were born extremely lucky to families who aren't anti-LGBT, and we still feel like outsiders. We don't mind this feeling anymore, we take pride in it. Still for her being trans in "almost Eastern Europe" is dangerous, and tho my mother supports the LGBT movement (in private, but I'm glad she's open minded) I still feel that if I took home a girl instead of a boy, that could lead to some uncomfortable conversations.
In our metamodernist reality there is no chance for happiness but if people self-actualize. We will do that. I'm glad you did.

I’ve avoided this video essay like a plague fr because I wanted to play the game myself and honestly banger. I’m glad I did that. We Know the Devil absolutely queer horror in so many ways.
Though being someone religious it was a bit difficult especially with Venus’ route because to me transitioning and not trying to bury something about yourself is closer to godly. Taking steps to be closer to who you want to be is sorta like taking steps toward divinity if that makes sense.
Like I know in a way this game is about satanism. Not in a Devil praising way but in a liberating absolutely unapologetic self-love but I don’t feel like that conflicts with God’s message of love and acceptance, flaws and all. When Jupiter goes into the whole “you can’t just change the rules suddenly” I felt that so deeply because I remember having a bit of a crisis over that. The idea of doing good things perhaps for selfish reasons, just to make yourself feel good has been a complicated matter for me.
That last route where all three of them become devils is beautiful. Jupiter using her many hands to pull Venus from her skin is something I will think about for a long long time.

OHHH MY FUCKING GOD I LOVE THIS GAME IT MAKES ME SO EXCITED TO SEE SOMEONE TALKING ABOUT IT!!!!!!!! You should maybe play Night In The Woods, because it's my favorite game ever and goes into the feeling of intense depression and dissociation, while also being so charming and so underrated. I would die if I saw a Night In The Woods video by you /pos

I think I'd enjoy the game a lot better if it weren't so frustrating/stressful to get the polycule ending. Or the true ending, whichever you prefer. I fretted like crazy over the count of how many times I picked each character, and in the end, the final choice before the check, didn't offer me the option I needed to balance the scales. I lost, not because I didn't know what I needed to do to succeed, but that enough choices at enough points in the game didn't have all three options, that I just couldn't make those pieces fall into place.
