+PhoenixBlade538 I think he means that most neighborhoods still are segregated because of the history of redlining and more recently reverse redlining-housing/banking policies that influence where whites, black, hispanic and so on, live.
+PhoenixBlade538 we have made some progress as a country I never thought I'd see a black president it took a lot of support from white people to get him elected but really hardly nothing's change but the date... We continue to fight undercover hate/racism it's like a virus you don't notice till your dead or have some kind of epiphany... Racism has a very strong effect on us socially & economically through media, jobs, schools, communities, justice system they're so sneaky with it.... You see it everyday but don't recognize it!
+GH3TTO R1CHIE RICH There is racism. You're correct. There is racism against every race one way or another. Under the first amendment, you are allowed to be racist, and express your racist beliefs. It is, however, illegal to act negatively with your racism, such as segregation, assault battery, incitement of violence or hate, etc. I went to school with a mixing pot, Asians, Latinos, and African Americans. I often shared classes with a mixture of them. Come recess or not lunch, most would hang out with similar people. Nobody was telling the races to stay apart, they choose to do so. If you have the money and want to buy a house in a majority white neighborhood, you can, because you have the money to do so. If you're denied on the basis VB of your race, you can sue, because it is illegal. Segregation is your choice.
+Hunter Martin You choices aren't created in a vacuum. Housing discrimination didn't become illegal until the late 60s. And even then just because some federal law passed saying you can't discriminate in housing based on race, doesn't mean it was a well enforced law. It says nothing about local or state laws that enable de facto housing discrimination. Again look up "reverse redlining". Bank of America got sued for essentially ghetto-izing people-push people of color to specifically go into neighborhoods and steering them away from white ones. I'm not denying individual choice is a factor in neighborhoods selection. But I don't ignore systemic forces either.
it's really not that easy to get over it like people said it's not like a little break up where you just get over it. we will never forget no matter what if we forget it will repeat itself because history ALWAYS repeats itself if we don't remember
Well, Anakin Skywalker was the only son of a slave, born into slavery. Yes, he was freed by Jedi, but the Republic allowed slavery on outer planets like Tatooine and made no move to abolish it. In fact it is said that famous war criminal Obi Wan Kenobi was known to keep a Gungan slave who was to be incarcerated. The Empire didn't keep slaves and was loathe to work with slavers. They only handed Han Solo over to a slaver like Jaba the Hut by proxy (Boba Fett) with the aim of crushing a terrorist rebellion. #VaderWasRight
I wonder now about who the constitution originally applied to. Were only free citizens with voting rights protected by the constitution? As well as black slaves, were women, men without prescribed ownership of land, and children not covered? We know that women were not considered equal at that time and we still do not have an ERA for women. What other people did the revolution and its constitution not include as equal with due rights?
Yes. Coverture laws prevented a woman from having a separate legal existence from a man; including the right to own property, to enter contracts, to testify in court, or to serve on a jury. Thanks to feminism, almost all coverture laws were eliminated by the end of the twentieth century, although a few still exist. www.nwhm.org/blog/coverture-the-word-you-probably-don%E2%80%99t-know-but-should/
God can see all lies. Thank you, Douglass, for shedding light on this lie. “For nothing is hidden that will not be made manifest, nor is anything secret that will not be known and come to light.” Luke 8:17.
You have a representative democracy and your democracy already has socialism in it. A country cannot exist socially or economically without aspects of socialism. Stop conflating socialism with Stalin-ism and stop watching Fox News. You're welcome.
The only reason why I like fourth of july is because of the fireworks thats about it. what does independence from the british mean to a person who is a black american? nothing.
***** Independence day means different things to different people. Sometimes it doesn't mean anything at all to some Americans due to the violent history their ancestors faced in this country. That's just how it is. The fireworks are nice to look at though.
Galaxy My Sadness Hate to be mean but screw some fireworks, it means nothing but lights and distraction, Blacks need their own day and that's June 19th the day that the last bound known slaves in GalvesTexas received news that they too are now free in the United States
Vast expanses of knowledge in history is vital for justice, for otherwise all the evils past might be repeated. But, America has moved on in great strides since 1852. Independence day (the nation's birthday) shall not be a day to remember and cry in agony over the past pains as it has been suffered by every part of the body, but to rejoice and be thankful over the health, life and well being of the whole body-the nation.
+MykTheOccultist why does that have to be the only options one has? Thats how all you people think , the lesser of the two evils that are given to people or no option. Further more,we still are under British control.
Damu Piru Under British control? How? We are self-governed. Our Constitution and rights are very different. There is no freedom of speech or right to own and carry firearms in Britain. And 'you people'? Who are you referring to? What people? So you're racist too?
+MykTheOccultist racist? really? No not racist talking about close minded people that only have a limited space of thinking. I see where your goin here and im not interested.
Damu Piru My mistake then. The US started as a British colony. I suppose if they pulled out then we could be under Russian control, or possibly some other colonizing nation. But as history played out, if we didn't rebel against the crown we would be a British territory.
Those kind of speeches are so misguided because the current generation of Whites has NOTHING to do with slavery, nor have any Black person today been an actual slave. Does that mean everything is okay. No, we can have a debate about the legality around working prisoners that are practical slaves or social issues poorer communities have and how they are not listen to and so on, BUT... If the only recourse for social justice is to tell the "White kid" *none stop* that hes a bad person. Guess what will happen to the kid when he grows up... Do you think he will love the people that from hes point of view have always talked shit about him or do you think he, like a kid beaten by hes father, will resent them?!? Its a joke seeing a super privileged Black person like James Earl Jones talk TODAY as if hes living back in 1852 via the writings of others because it comes of as very hypocritical or out of touch!
Who are you to talk about James Earl?.Are you saying that because how well he talk?.Are you saying that because he have authority in his voice like the way he betrayal Mufusa in Lion king?. You have a lot of nerve to talk and display a man, Fredrick Douglas. He have every right to say every single word that had came put of his mouth. Are you mad because they are still displaying hatred towards blacks??...Oh remember the hanging never stopped..Whomever celebrate this holiday should be ashamed as an African American..First it was ruled by British once right after the took it from the Native Americans...Then so called American was found then not yet AMERICANS gained what Independence....While my ancestor gain liberty and freedom..What would I look like to celebrate a white man holiday that beat, rape and killed...Racism still here and it will never go away....How can we as a people over look 500 yrs back....People say it was a long time ago...It wasn't that long ago if you have elderly people that are 110 or 120 and can tell stories about slavery...
Ricia Pinkney "Racism still here and it will never go away...." Which is why one has to use tactics that make more people racist rather than other. Sounds like a really smart plan. /sarcasm This is like if I, as a Norwegian who were occupied by the Nazis during ww2, continued to ONLY have speeches that told the German how bad they were in the past instead of focusing on moving forward despite history because none of the Germans alive today, with a few exceptions, had anything to do with the action of their government during the second world war. Yet Blacks in the US dont get this. They just drone on and on and on and on and on and act as if they just hate Whites a bit more or talk a bit more shit about then. THEN more Whites will support them and create change. Whats wrong with this setting and selected speech?!? Its the total opposite of what people like Martin Luther King would have chosen and for good reason.
Ricia Pinkney Bob The legitimacy of Frederick Douglas views at the time is NOT the issue. Its that this is taken and used politically in a manner that does NOT bring people together on a US national day like 4th of July, but tears them apart instead. On an issue that NO living US Citizen today is a part of while clearly insinuating that every White person is guilty of "something". This whole setup is divisive.

I watched this just to hear James Earl Jones's voice
darth vader reads Frederick douglass historic speech.
Mr. Douglass's words towards the elite now spread to the 4 corners of the earth.
Powerful... Simply powerful.

Mm, very valid question.

i do
How many of you closed your eyes and imagined Mufasa, Thulsa Doom or Darth Vader reading this?

slavery was abolished in the UK before the US.
that was amazing speech, so true even till this day, that speech is relevant and true .

Even if that meant taking over the continent.
the people try to make it a christian country
