    Esports at the Olympics is a logistical nightmare, would be rife with corruption, and is the exact opposite of what we need in the games industry right now.
    EDIT: Let's put it this way; Chess should be put into the Olympics before any esport does.

      Absolutely. But if eSports could get its own competition which groups a bunch of games (something like Evo, but for like, all eSports), that could maybe be cool. But yeah, a logistical nightmare for sure

      I don't think esports should be at the Olympic as they are way too closely tied to the companies that produce them and sports getting in shouldn't be a marketing thing.

    The one about Earthboundy "kid" RPGs with underlying dark themes hits home with a lot of gamers that are now adults nostalgic for their childhoods.
    I find it really weird we can agree that endless sequels are fine if there's creativity behind it yet can't extrapolate that out to an entire subgenre of games that are typically made with tons of passion in mind.

    I mean Dragon Quest hasn't changed much since it started on the NES, and all of the games are really good, so infinite sequels are fine, as long as they keep it interesting. That's why Dragon Quest 12 is gonna change some things up for the series. The director said that 12 will define the Dragon Quest series for the next 20 years. If a game series is really good, and they do some sort of noticeable change/addition that keeps it fresh every 15-20 years, then that series can go on forever and I'll be happy.

    I personally disagree with the Earthbound tweet. It's true that some games like YiiK were obviously made because the creator had some deep narrative they wanted to tell, but spared no thought about how it would play as a game. Meanwhile you have games like Omori that actually think about being games first and foremost, while also having a great story to go with it.
    Edit: Rewriting the rest so it doesn't read like an Omori ad lol. I disagree with Coney were he seemed as though he was tired of indie games being about depression. I think this ignores the fact that the appeal of these games comes from their nuances. Why is this character depressed? How does it affect them? What will they do to overcome it? As long as the creator tackles the subject matter in a way that feels personal to them (and makes it fun to play), I think that's a game worth making and playing.

      "Meanwhile you have games like Omori that actually think about being games first and foremost, while also having a great story to go with it." I love Omori, but this is not true at all. Omocat has gone on record saying that she wanted Omori to be a game, but moreover that she wanted to tell the STORY through a game. While she didn't have the capacity to do that, she created the Omoriboy webcomic until she did. Omori is a story-driven game, and I love the story it tells, but the Earthbound-style JRPG gameplay is not mechanically distinct enough to get away from the point of the tweet.

    • @ALloydRH
      @ALloydRH 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@keenfrizzle I disagree, I thought the emotion mechanic was an interesting way of rolling stat buffs and elemental type advantage into one. Also the follow up mechanic really sells the dynamic of the 4 friends and in some cases reflect their interactions in cutscenes. I'm sure other games have similar mechanics in terms of function, but these mechanics combined into 1 package is what gives Omori it's unique flavour. These are all just opinions though.

    • @Ed-1749
      @Ed-1749 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The issue really is that a lot of them retread similar stories, that being the "what if mental health was a jrpg" and they stumble through it and forget the nuance making it feel shallow. There are 1 or 2 of them are good, but you underestimate the amount of rpgmaker trash people make because they think they can do it too.

If all you're playing are the Celeste's and Hades' and Undertales' (the ones that break out to more mainstream gaming audiences), then of course the Indie space is going to seem more varied.
      Underneath the surface, however, are a lot of games that kind of blend in together just due to how many Indie Devs are out there releasing games. Streamers probably do get into those weeds in their quest for content, which might put them at a better position to judge the "state" of the Indie Dev scene more than most other gamers.

    A lot of people seem to be misunderstanding Coney's point on the copyright one. It's not that it's a bad idea per se, but having the claim be that (relatively) short incentivizes companies to artificially extend that period by adding more movies. So if a Dreamworks film released now in 2021, and was set to be public domain in 2046, Dreamworks could just use that 25 years to make a sequel to the first, extending their hold on the franchise as a whole for another 25 years. The end result is a bunch of garbage filler movies made solely to prevent franchises from becoming public; aka the Disney strategy but even more of it and literally everyone is doing it.

The Splatoon community single handedly pushed me away from that franchise and it’s been one of my favorite series’ ever since it came out. It’s an incredible toxic and disgusting community that I couldn’t look at the game the same way again. Smash also has an incredibly toxic community that I just kind of distanced from smash for a bit and distanced from the incredibly toxic people. Of course these are my experiences but I do think other people could be happier if they distance from the toxic side of a community

    I think the main thing for Esports at the olympics is that what would we even do? run a tournament? Esports already to that, we all ready have speed running competitions, theres now way to fabricate Esports on the olympic stage that would be impactful and digestible like other sports. Like loo man or woman lifts big weight (wow thats larger than last year!) compared to or xxpwnnoobsxx got first in smash the targets? like no, Esports are simply conceptualized in a different way.

    I got a chuckle out of Guilty Gear being "incredibly accessible." I would go so far as to say it is one of the most difficult fighting games to get started in. That's a genre problem though, not one specific to the series. Anime fighters either have a really high knowledge/mechanical skill barrier or they are bad (MVCI).

    • @dodobrain
      @dodobrain 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What I meant by accessible I was mostly speaking about the Gatling system. At least with my experience in +R, when I first started off the Gatling system it made me feel like I was doing good. I began to learn more BnB’s without too much research. And with Strive came what I believe to be the best in game teaching tool with the mission mode

  • @LettuceGod1

    Guilty Gear is legitimately the best fighting game series ever tho. All of the games slap and the only meh one is the first, but it’s only meh because it’s a kusoge and kusoge are still fun sometimes.

  • @legend510_
    @legend510_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Esports should not be a part of the Olympics. There should be some type of large event around the time of the Olympics that would be for esports. Have the best players from every country go out and play for their country, have medals, make it like the Olympics, but it’s for esports specifically. It may be hard to do, but it would be better than the Olympics, which is a test of physical skill, getting invaded by people sitting in chairs with controllers.

    Ok so consoles built in to tvs isn't a new concept at all. TVs have been made with a built-in NES, super nintendo, and even a PS2. The issue is that game consoles become obsolete pretty quickly when the next replacement comes out but TVs are kept for much longer. Also you can't take your console somewhere else without taking the tv with you (tvs are way too slim for any console other than the switch to fit without being re-packaged) and if something went wrong with your console you would have to send off your tv to be repaired or have a technician come to your house. Also if you wanted to get a new tv but wanted to keep your console then too bad. Seems cool but if you really think about it you're actually worse off unless there's a serious package deal discount.

    Coney, if a patent lasts 20 years (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Term_of_patent_in_the_United_States) then 50 years is still to mush for an intellectual property to b under protection.
    Copyright laws are detrimental to our cultural progression. Because intellectual properties become franchises more often an appeal from 20 to 35/40 should be possible but that's It.

    • @jackalknight8540

      The patent shouldn't go out before the creator is retired or dead. no one should get the chance to make more then the creator. the whole point of bringing something new into the world is to set your mark. 20-40 years isn't enough. especially now with the internet.
