I agree with you that the ELDX and SST are garbage I'm basing this on real hunting situations

Bullets mushrooming and fragmenting without penetrating properly I never lost an animal but it often took several well placed shots to bring it down, a friend shot a moose on my place and it took 5 shots to kill it

My experience with the SST is it moved so fast within 100 yards it does not expand. Also had problems with fragmenting or being frangible. Does great at the range, but has caused me to shoot a deer with multiple shots to put it down.

My son and I went on our first elk hunt this year. I used 180g Partitions out of my 30-06. Sub MOA and no worries about the velocity getting too low for expansion. My son used 165g TTSX out of his 300 WM and sub MOA as well. Both of us shot our bulls at just over 300 yards and both bullets did a great job.

    • @AlaskanBallistics
      @AlaskanBallistics  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

That's a great testimony to both bullets. Good hunting.

Thanks for sharing. I am a fellow Alaskan hunter and I have been very happy with the factory made Barnes Vor-tx TTSX BT, 120 gr for 6.5 CM. One shot kills on a larger caribou, at 120 yds, and a medium (6') grizzly bear at 151 yds.. Accuracy was key in both kills, obviously, but the bullet also did a great job, as far as I'm concerned. I'm taking Nosler Trophy Grade Accubond 140 gr 6.5 CM on my moose trip in a few weeks. Partition is a strong contender in my mind but I chose Accubond for several reasons/ intuition. Putting the 6.5 CM to the test on this one. It hasn't let me down yet.

I've been a partition believer for 20 years. Used them in 140g for my 7-08 and 280rem loads. The TTSX have been good for me as well. I haven't gotten a chance to try the federal bullets yet, but my dad has in the 7-08 and he had good results. One not mentioned that I really like in my 257-roberts is the 100g sierra pro-hunter. It's not a current production bullet or maybe a name change lately, but it has been very effective on deer. All of this has been on deer in west Alabama

    My opinion by experience:
    #1 Hornady Interbond
    #2 Nosler Partition
    #3 Swift Scirocco
    #4 Federal Terminal Ascent
    #5 Swift A-Frame
    #6 Nosler Accubond
I have hand-loaded many of these and bought factory rounds to shoot with great results on paper and on harvesting game. They seal well in my barrel (Krieger Match Grade) for great accuracy in bullet placement. The problem I ran into with shooting Barnes or other solids was they foul the barrel badly compared to lead with copper jacket bullets. I had to call the manufacturers to find out why there were fliers. I will say that most people will not have this problem if they clean the barrel after the 3rd or 4th round or there barrel does not have a tight tolerance. I would test it to see what your barrel likes and go from there. What shoots good in one gun may not shoot good in another. With roughly 30 years of personal experience doing this, you will go through trial and error to find what you like, so be ready to spend a little money to find that exact round you like, (IF YOU CAN FIND THEM NOW).

You made the comment about the Accubond LR round. Historically, these rounds have done a great job of finding their target and facilitating the process of expiring after the shot. Two years ago, I was on an out of state hunt and shot a fairly large white-tailed deer at around 450yrds. That deer ran over 500yrds on a perfect shoulder shot with almost no blood along its path. After finding the deer and examining the shot I noticed that the round made a full pass through but didn't do a ton of damage in the body. This past season, I shot a nice buck at 200yrds with the same load and had similar results but this time I didn't recover the animal. I found a bunch of hair on the ground where the animal was standing but zero blood. I hired a guy with tracking dogs to assist in the recovery. The deer bedded down 50yrds from the original shot but ran for over 500yrds after the dogs jumped him. This was 3+ hours after the shot. I was using Nosler Accubond LR 150 grain .270WSM.

Federal fusion 7mm mag. 150 grain. I've made 5 shots in Montana on Mule deer between 600 and 663 yards. This is my go to 7mm round. Very accurate in my gun. Not the fastest but it does the job. Hate the Hornady SSTs. Used one time on a Mule deer. Ran over a mile on a front shoulder hit. 154grain. Never made it into the lungs.
Nosler partition is good on dangerous game.

I read once the most popular hunting round in Africa is a 308 Winchester with 180 gr. round nose bullets. Any brand. I am 76 years old and have been hunting Minnesota whitetails since I was about 15 years old. Shot my first deer with a 180 gr. round nose Remington. Have shot both Hornady and Remington round nose bullets over the years. Have shot a LOT of deer. Shot deer out to 250 paces (deer was running) with a 30-06 Ruger M77. Have shot deer over 200 pounds. I watched my son shoot an 8 point buck once with a 180 gr. Barnes X reload of mine. Bullet penciled right through. No Barnes bullets for me. Also shot a deer with a Berger bullet. No more Berger bullets for me. Fusion bullets aren't RN but are excellent bullets. Super accurate. Same thing with Nosler partition bullets. Excellent bullets. Remington Corelok are also excellent bullets. Sierra bullets work but tend to shed their cores. Hornady soft point interlock bullets have always served me well. Lapua 185 FP are excellent bullets. I have never shot a deer with Speer bullets but I suspect they would work well. After all of the years you might ask what I now use. A Kimber Montana 308 with barrel shortened to 20 inches with a 2.5x8 Leupold scope with duplex crosshairs mounted in Leupold mounts. And of course a 180 gr. bullet with 43 grains of Varget and large rifle primers.

Thank you for sharing your experience. Don't count barnes or though.. their lrx and ttsx are the best two bullets made. The X and TSX are terrible.

I bought a box of 150gr Federal Nosler Partition and I was sighting my Sako S20 Hunter .308 on a cold late fall day. I shot a nice tight group at 100 yards and after seeing how the Sako liked that round I bought 9 more boxes. I always have liked the Nosler Partition. I mostly hunt deer now.

Love partitions because they hit hard, crush bone deep penetration, and the terminal ascents have done well for me, but the accubond has been the best bullet ever used from 7mm-08 to 300 wsm from coyote to elk and black bear. Accurate, great penetration, and great damage. Will anchor a big animal if hit shoulder.

    • @AlaskanBallistics
      @AlaskanBallistics  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I like the accubond but you have to drive them fast. I had a shower but accurate load in .30-06 180gr that got zero expansion at 250 yards on a caribou.
Godspeed and Good hunting my friend!

The TTSX shoots under MOA out of my T3X 3006. Iv shot 1/2 MOA groups this year several times and can only wonder what a more accomplished shooter could do. Ammunition availability has kept me from experimenting as much as I would like to. Interesting fact is the hornady white tail 150 grain shoot to the same point of impact as the165 TTSX and is still MOA or better. I only put 6 rounds through it and will definitely finish the bow to prove it to myself but I like to shoot and it’s definitely cheaper.

Federal Fusion is one of the most under-appreciated high quality ammo. I love it. The 300 AAC 150 Grain 1900 FPS (actually shoots about 2000 FPS on chrono) is sub-MOA accurate and easily kills Whitetails out to 200 yards. Great product - Kudos to Federal.

    Found this video now 😀
And funny enough, I see that you rate the Barnes TTSX and LRX BT as I do 😀
Mostly I use the TTSX, unless I know that the shots will most likely be longer than 300 meters.
If I know the shots will be shorter than 300 or 400 meters, depending on what cartridges I use, I use TTSX bullets in all the cartridges I have and in other cartridges I reload for friends.
I have tested lots of different bullets in lots of different cartridges over the 40 years I have hunted big game and the Barnes TTSX bullets are by far the best and versatile bullets I have used and they have been very accurate in all guns I have tested them in.
With my 6.5-06 my 3 shot groups at 100 meters are 5mm with the 120 grains TTSX.
I use it for everything from hare to moose.

Big corn fed 200+ pound Wisconsin whitetail deer. 7mm Remington Magnum handload using the Nosler 175gr. Partition bullet. Broadside lung shot at 80 yards. Deer made one hop, took two steps and then collapsed. The Nosler Partition destroyed both lungs and exited the far side leaving a rather large fan shaped blood spray on the ground. This is my deep woods deer handload for the 7mm and also serves as my backup "moose" gun load. My primary moose/bear gun is a .375 Holland and Holland.

Great video. I just want to say that if you like the Federal fusion then you'll love the Gold Dots. Same plated, bonded construction with a much higher BC. Keep the velocity impacts below 2950 fps and the accuracy in 1:9 twist in my .264 WM was great. The same identical mushroom. 3000 fps 140gr in 6.5 too much expansion.

Too bad they're charging an arm and a leg for them, they don't penetrate as well as ttsx, have a low b.c. , have a reputation as a 1.5 moa shooter,
They perform excellent on game, but so does ttsx and lrx from barnes. A streamlined, polymer tip bonded boattail rear compartment in nosler partition would modernize it and propel it into the number one slot.

The partitions with the PT are what's called Protected Point. I believe they're designed that way to reduce the amount of point deformation caused by heavy recoil and loading\unloading. They're technically a different bullet.

100% agree with the LRX. I use the 190 grain in my 300 WM. I use Choice Ammunitions hand loads (they are better at it than I am haha) the load is 3032 FPS advertised from a 26 inch test barrel. I got an average of 3020 FPS out of my Xbolt over 20 rounds and I get about an average of 3/4 MOA (100 Yards) with this ammo. I was fortunate enough to harvest a bull elk in Oregon and another in Montana last season one at 115 yards and the other at 420 perfect performance and anchored both animals off their feet on the shot. Super impressed.

Nosler Partition PT stands for protected point. This is a close range bullet for rifles with high recoil so the tip want get damaged. The other is a Spitzer Partition. The Oryx is a protected point as well. Trick with Partition Spitzers. Carry a piece of fine steel wool and keep your points sharp. My 300 Weatherby Magnum “wiseman barrel” shoots the 180 Spitzer Partition sub 5 shot center to center in the 0.2 at 3,375 FPS. Shooting RL 26 and Fed 215M primers in Norma cases.
The Oryx bullets shoot well in my guns. Also, give Swift Scirocco II a try.

Well, I agree the partitions performance on impact. For the difference, the PT on one box of ammo you have meant “protected tip “ while the other option is their spritzer. I ran the very first release of the accubond and the accubond long range. I short a couple mule deer with the accubond, and a mule deer and an elk with the accubond long range. All 4 animals I had to shoot twice. I got zero sign of expansion on all 8 bullets. All 4 animals were 1 lung shot, one neck shot. Exit holes looked exactly like the input hole. Again, first release on both bullets. This was in my 6.5 SAUM going about 3100fps.

Interesting. I knew the accubond didn't expend at low velocities and that the ABLR did better. I had zero expansion on na caribou at 250 yards with the accubond. But it v was going 2600 fps from a 22" 30-06 180gr

Just an FYI- That "flat point" nose on the 250 Partition is to protect the tip of the bullets in the magazine during recoil.I didn't realize Noselr made them in 338 cal, but I guess that is only for their factory ammo. I have never seen them listed in 338 for sale as a component. Many on here will know this and you may have checked it too, but most spitzer style bullets actually get fired down range looking like the protected point anyway after being in the magazine for more than one round being fired before it. I have seen pictures from various bullet companies of their bullets being fired and filmed at a high rate of speed that shows the lead tips actually start melting off in flight from the heat of friction at high speeds, so they arrive looking like a protected point type bullet (should be able to find similar pics and info on the net fairly easily as well as in some older loading manuals) I know Hornady has put out short videos talking about their newer plastic tips being able to withstand the heat of friction when fired at high speed etc, and I'm sure others have as well.
I have had extremely food luck getting at or below MOA with Partitions in several rifles. My current 340 will do it with the 210's and 250's for three shot groups (what is shoot in this cal to prevent the barrel from getting too hot during a string) and may do it with the 225's but haven't tried yet in this particular rifle. Keep up al the good work brother!

@@AlaskanBallistics I think most manu's are finally figuring out that speed not only kills, it melts LOL and are changing the tip formulations to prevent that. Hey- I am always glad to hear you mention two holes in an animal. I have always believed that pass through's are what you want in a game bullet. Energy alone doesn't kill. Holes though vitals and the hide do. If your bullet stops against the far side ribs or hide, how hard could it have been smacking the vitals it just passed though? I want a bullet that hits them hard enough all the way from one side to the other to make exit and do as much damage to everything it passed through as possible.

I'm a little late to this party. But I really appreciate your philosophy on hunting bullets.
Cup and core and repurposed target bullets should not be used for hunting.
We as hunters need to have integrity and have respect for the game animals we harvest.
Anyway, how do you like the newer CX bullet in comparison to the GMX?
Does it change its standing in your list for you?
Do you factor in price when considering the order?
For example, Barnes Vortex in .308 loaded with 150grn TTSX is $86 here in B.C.
But Hornady Outfitter and Superfomance in .308 with 165grn CX are both $55.
The Deer won't know the difference, but my wallet sure does.
I'm not shilling for any particular brand. I'm 58. I know better.
But we are sometimes our own worst enemies. If we keep buying the stoopid expensive items instead of the regularly expensive items🤪, then the ammo companies and retailers won't have any incentive to bring prices back down from the stratosphere.
I can't even roll my own right now due to the lack of primers so I'm stuck with factory offerings for now.
    An unfortunate situation.

But have not yet used them on game. I'd like to do that this year.
I do see some LRX available in 145grn for 7mm. If I can get some primers, I will definitely give those a go.
I do still have SOME primers left. But I'm getting very low so I have to ration. Which, unfortunately, means I can't do any load development on new items. What a pain.
I hope this situation doesn't last much longer.
But please continue producing your informative videos.
I find them educational (Yup. It's still possible for a 58 yr old on the cusp of cootdom to learn.😁) and gives me new ideas and perspectives to try for myself. That is, whenever the heck these shortages stop and the prices come back to Earth.

My gun likes my reloaded 160gr trophy bonded tips but I only have 10 left and can’t find no more.

You are correct I like this video. I've got 7 boxes of the 6.5 Creedmoor 127grain LRX but I can't ever seem to find anymore so I don't know if that is what I want to stick with. On the last video you said BIG Game not dog deer RE SST on Missouri deer & bone I only shot ribs & they work 100% . Hard cast & soft point kill VERY SLOW , I would only use Partition / A frame style ammo for Big & Bad game . In a 44 I would use heavy XTP , not hard cast or soft points .

I still have a bunch of handloads with the Federal Terminal Assent in 270WSM and 26 Nosler. For a hunting bullet they give me ridiculous accuracy. I've loaded the 140gr in 6.5 Creedmoor and was shooting consistently into a half inch the other 2 cartridges I've loaded with it is still in that .75 inch area. Have you ever got your hands on any of the Swift Sirocco 2 bullets?? I loaded the 130gr Sirocco 2 bullets in 6.5 Creedmoor for my mom and dad for this year's deer season and that bullet shot really good and the performance was perfect even at distance on Louisiana white tail. I've been trying to find some I can load in one of my 7mm guns for hopefully a moose or elk hunt next year instead of my usual Accubond... and that's if I can find either before next year but if not I have a good stockpile of the TTSX bullets in just about everything I shoot. Great video as always keepem coming brother!!!

I’ve never seen a Norma spire point, but they may make one. Federal makes a premium line of 30.06 with Barnes TSX bullets, that shoot sub MOA out of my 70 year old Remington 721. The only factory ammo that shot that well. Norma wasn’t bad, at about an 1 1/2”. After all the technology and advancements in bullet shape and material, nothing beats a Nosler partition!

Last year I shoe a Mule deer doe at 618 yard in my 300 Win Mag with the 165 grain Fusion ammo. It was in a Tikka T3 with the Sig BDX scope and rangefinder combo. This factory ammo shoots amazing out of my gun. I bought 6 boxes of it back when it was $19.99 a box! Now the price is crazy.
Anyway, that was my longest shot ever on a big game animal, one shot, right behind the shoulder, right where I was aiming, she humped up and stumbled about 20 feet and fell over dead. Very good ammo!

Barnes LRX is my load in .300wby SS Vanguard S2 & 6.5CM Tikka lite SS getting .6 MOA in each! TTSX would be #2, pushed the 130+150gr to max loads in the .300Wby and had petal loss in water jugs, but still 7-8 jugs penetration 60% weight retention. Best bullet made right now with price and availability, imo. Don't want lead in my meat, but Terminal Ascents are on my wish list, I'd use those... Pinnacle of bullet design.

I use Nosler partition bullets in both my .308 and 300 RUM. I also use Remington A Frame for both. Remington A Frame has a little better accuracy at 400 yards. With the 300 RUM and about the same in the .308 at 200 yards compared with Nosler. I took some black tips out of old 30-06 and loaded it in the 300 RUM. Not an accurate bullet and not good for hunting, but it goes through steel plate and level 4 body armor.
