Why.are you surprised that an American publication talks about something from an American perspective? Most Americans still haven't heard of mangosteen, and a lot of those who do only learned recently from places like tiktok.
I tried a mangosteen for the first time on a business trip to China in 2014. It's the best fruit I've ever eaten. So when I found some at Whole Foods her in eastern Massachusetts a few years ago, I excitedly bought one for my family to try. It wasn't remotely the same.
I sure pray for the farmers sake that the bottom doesnt fall out of the market so to speak, if the popularity drops too much then price will too, and they will be wishing they had kept the trees they cut to grow Mangosteen
I think the true danger is over production. Where I live "Hops" have always been a major cash crop. Then more and more farms switched over. Now it's less profitable. Rinse and repeat. With apples, pears, and wine grapes among others.
I was volunteering at 2018 Asian Games, whenever this fruit restocked in the dining hall people would stop the cart and take as many mangosteen they could hold. The poor man pushing the cart was surrounded by sooo many ppl fighting to get mangosteen. And by the time the cart reach the display basket, the mangosteen is already finished. 😂😂😂 Some Kazakhstan officials told me that mangosteen is very expensive in their country. They can go about $9 a kilo. I also seen Chinese athletes use their clothes to put the mangosteen and bring it to the dorm. People really love this fruit. Even Indians athletes fight for this fruit too.
In Thailand you get 3 kg. For 100 thb. And farmer complaining about how cheap it's and they have to dump it some time to lessen supply 😂. Please come and export it from Thailand ❤
I've got a mangosteen tree in my yard and the tree takes a long time to bear fruit. Mine is over 6 years old and a not yet bore one. It's a low maintenance plant and doesn't catch a lot of bugs. All you need is a hell lot of patience.
I'm turning 45 in a few days, and have never heard of mangosteen. But then, after all, I'm in Norway, so not much exotic here. The fruit aisle in the stores are pitiful small. Mostly with apple and banana...
Thanks for all the friendly and interesting answers. 🙂 I would for sure want to visit Southeast Asia some day. I hope I will. Then I'll try all the strange fruits you are mentioning. Here in Norway there's delicious apples, plums, cherries and other fruits in the Hardanger Fjord just south of where I live, where warm water come with the gulf-stream all the way from the Gulf of Mexico with weather that make my country into a quite normal country and not like Greenland like it would be, without this current. And the forests are full of the sweetest berries. There's no predators, except on the border to Sweden (Bears and wolves and wolverines) and no dangerous insect or snakes. Most of the year, in fact, there's no insects at all here. And I've barely seen 10-50 flies and other bugs this summer. That's one blessing to be living in a country so close to the Arctic. So I return the hospitality and wishes for people to come see my country. Specially here on the western coast, where the deep, long fjords, the snow cowered mountain peaks, glaciers and beautiful, lush and fertile landscapes are.
In Bangkok, where I come from, one kilogram of mangosteen costs 35 Baht, which is less than one US dollar. In Florida, where I currently live, one pound of mangosteen is $16. They are considered exotic fruits, with exotic prices.
you are fool if you pay more than 35 baht a kilo for them. there are ok but nothing so specail. i live in thailand too and last time was 10 years ago i had one only given for free. this video is some clueless wonder westerner so amazed as she bought the hype.
Exactly they would rather sell fruit for huge profit to foreign countries than to sell their own countrymen. Such a shame as a Indian, I have never tasted or seen it before.
@@manorsolomon951 this is exactly the same with high quality durian in Thailand, they're gone abroad for profit. Only 2nd or 3rd tier(low quality) durian stays in the country.
@@manorsolomon951That's because India doesn't have a good supply chain ecosystem. Most of the Asian produce we get in the West comes from China and Southeast Asia although India is a larger producer. Even after 75 years, Government of India, regardless of political party in power, is busy enriching its political base giving crop protection and guaranteed prices to only crops that are mass produced in the Northern plains and let farmers from the rest of the country fend for themselves. It's only in recent years that Delhites are seeing what fresh young coconut looks like though it's common in the South. If you watched the video carefully, these aren't shipping to US either because of lack of affordable irradiation facilities. Farmer sells to middlemen and gets only Rs.350 a kilo. He has to because they perish fast and he has no support to fall back on. GoI does this to coffee, cardamom, coconut, peppercorn, rubber, areca, coconut etc that grow in western Karnataka, Kerala and Maharashtra. Greedy are those that strong arm government to enrich them from tax money without consideration to fellow countrymen that commit suicide due to lack of price for their sweat.
Its my fav fruit ever! Im from malaysia , so im blessed with lots of tropical fruit. But its true, you cant quite describe how it tastes like. You have to try it yourself 😅 my lil tips : choose medium size mangosteen, darkest purple on the outside, pure white in the inside. Heaven❤
Here in Minnesota USA, a pound of mangosteen costs between $10-13 per pound (per 2.2 kg). They come pre-packaged so each package is usually at least $22 with about 8 to 12 fruits. If they weren't so expensive, I'd buy them every week! They're so delicious, but I think I've only eaten fresh ones a handful of times in my 30 years of life. Shame.
That’s quite a markup! 😲 It’s such a shame that they’re so pricey in the U.S. Fresh mangosteen definitely seems worth indulging in more often! Have you considered trying any dried or frozen versions, or do you think they wouldn’t compare to the fresh ones?
Lived for 6 years in Singapore, basically spent my teens there and I had no idea how much nostalgia that would cause me. Should have stuck to apples and oranges because craving comfort food that will literally rot before it reaches your shores is so frustrating. I'm willing to shell out so much for things I used to buy on the street coming home from school. Mangosteen, jackfruit, rambutan, water apple.
In Philippines especially in Davao region. We made it powder and put into Capsule and the rest we make coffee. It has anti cancer properties. In this fruit season its price is low, its just about P40/kg, if not fruit season it range up to P250/kg.
Wow, that’s a serious commitment! 😅 It’s like waiting for a long-term investment to finally pay off. Definitely not a quick fix for those mangosteen cravings! Would you consider planting one anyway, or is that a bit too much patience for you?
@@Hazynote253 That's a smart idea! 🌱 Grafting could definitely speed up the process and give you fruit sooner. Have you ever tried grafting any plants, or is it all new territory for you?
@@Hazynote253 That will give you hardly any advantage, that sapling has still to develope a root systems. I planted once a hectare with teak saplings, the result was disappointing. Less quality trees and no time advantage whatsoever.
Wife’s family is Lao. They love this fruit for many years. Went to Thailand and Laos last July. I swear they purchased every available quality. Durian used to be cheap and a junk fruit for years..
This is my favourite fruit. Mangosteen has cooling effect. When you eat Durian, which is a hot fruit because of its high sulfur content, eat Mangosteen to negate that heat.
I just eat mangosteen other day here in my country Philippines and they're cheap here. 😂 And it's very sweet and I can only eat it one seedling at a time.
If you get them firsthand at farmers here in Indonesia, you can get them as cheap as 0.3 USD per kilogram, sometimes even lower. The price skyrockets when being exported because they rot very quickly once ripe.
@@oxoelfoxo They don't. But since Indonesia is so large, different regions/islands have different fruiting seasons. So for the whole country, the fruiting season is longer. Same with Durian, they are seasonal fruits. But, there are certain varieties that fruits all year.
As Sri Lankans living in Australia, mangosteen has been one of my family’s favourite fruits, unfortunately the prices here are very high so whenever we travel to South or South East Asia, we make sure to get plenty.
I don't think its a good idea for a farmer to go all in on one crop if that crop has suddenly peaked due to a fashion trend, it will soon die down and the plants take a few years to grow, seems pretty risky to me.
The US claims that it’s a relatively “new” fruit because it couldnt be imported 🤣🤣🤣🤣 The nearly 40-years old mangosteen tree behind my house: Am I a fcking joke to you
It's true that after watching it, you'll understand why mangosteen is so expensive! From planting to harvesting, it takes a lot of time and effort, not to mention preserving and transporting to maintain the best quality. However, its taste is really worth the price.
During mangosteen season in Malaysia, I can get them from roadside vendors selling for $2.50 per kilogram. So cheap. Local mangosteen tastes sweeter compared to the imported ones which has a stronger sour note. I think it's because they're harvested when they're ripe compared to the imported ones from Vietnam which are harvested before ripe. I think they have to account for logistical issues to make sure the fruits don't go bad after arriving. Probably added in some chemical to make them last longer too.
I'm Vietnamese, we call mangosteen is "măng cụt", they're so popular as other fruits, they're cheap and you could easily buy them in market. I feel so happy and lucky as I could eat the famous fruit on a daily basis
In the eastern and southern parts of Thailand, this fruit is abundant. It is grown together with durian. There is a mangosteen tree near my house that is almost a hundred years old. It has a sweet and refreshing taste, giving the body cooling energy, while durian gives a scorching heat.
The taste is like a Logan, Lychee, Mango and the ripest strawberry + blue berry you can ever lay your hands on. It is the epitome of a Berry flavor taste. With the soft texture of ice cream or ripe mango. Once ingested, anything else pales in comparison.
In Malaysia it was so cheap 30 years ago. I remember I went to buy from a farmer outside KL. The farmer told me to pluck myself and offer me free eating. Only those take back to charge RM1 per kilo 😂
This is one fruit I want try so badly. I have for many years. I live in a small town in the US. India is also such a vibrant beautiful place that I have longed to visit. Some day, I hope. These men work very hard. Amazing and informative video. Happy for these farms success. Thank you.
Mangosteen is a wonder fruit, can even prevent cancer. Its not expensive here in southeast asia especially if its in season. In summer it cost about less than US$1 per kilo here in mania, phis. It is cheaper in the provinces of course. But there is really nothing much to eat in a mangosteen fruit.

That’s unlikely to happen because mangosteen is a top tier fruit. It easily beats out most of the fruits in the American market .
Mangosteen is the best tasting fruit so don’t worry about demand. No one ever taste mangosteen will ever said it’s not. nice, it’s very tasty
@@M3W3 I hope you guys are right, I can see it being true, but as someone who watches economics a lot it worries me
I think the true danger is over production.
Where I live "Hops" have always been a major cash crop. Then more and more farms switched over. Now it's less profitable.
Rinse and repeat. With apples, pears, and wine grapes among others.
@@mrkojak-ci1zm Yeah thats definitely another potential effect. I hope the taste and perishability mitigate it
I was volunteering at 2018 Asian Games, whenever this fruit restocked in the dining hall people would stop the cart and take as many mangosteen they could hold. The poor man pushing the cart was surrounded by sooo many ppl fighting to get mangosteen. And by the time the cart reach the display basket, the mangosteen is already finished. 😂😂😂
Some Kazakhstan officials told me that mangosteen is very expensive in their country. They can go about $9 a kilo. I also seen Chinese athletes use their clothes to put the mangosteen and bring it to the dorm. People really love this fruit. Even Indians athletes fight for this fruit too.
In my place here in Mindanao, PH, a kilo is just $0.50
Tru if you're lucky you can just get one from the neighbors
That's still expensive, 12 ray whole sale sa farm, nya 20 sa palengke.
true.
And free when you grow em at home
I just bought it yesterday 4 kilos 100 pesos here in south cotabato so delicious!
In Thailand you get 3 kg. For 100 thb. And farmer complaining about how cheap it's and they have to dump it some time to lessen supply 😂. Please come and export it from Thailand ❤
Comparing to dollar bro.. so i can imagine the price in my country
@@mulkanmulkan5620 That would be around 1 US dollars per 1 kilo. Sometimes even cheaper at the peak of the season since it has a short shelf life.

Come visit us in the Southeast Asia and try our fruits.😄Mangosteens, Durians, Tarap, Mangoes, Rambutans, Snakeskin fruit...🍴
Things from Norway are exotic to people from Norway. 🤯🤣
It's incredibly cheap to fly to and stay in the Philippines. Davao is a safe city and has a wide variety of fruits.
come visit southeast Asia! i want to go to a temperate country and pig out on berries and peaches and plums and other cold weather fruit
Producer: Because we heard that American only started having mangosteens in 2007
Li: That's bulls*** 🤣
In Bangkok, where I come from, one kilogram of mangosteen costs 35 Baht, which is less than one US dollar. In Florida, where I currently live, one pound of mangosteen is $16. They are considered exotic fruits, with exotic prices.
you are fool if you pay more than 35 baht a kilo for them. there are ok but nothing so specail. i live in thailand too and last time was 10 years ago i had one only given for free. this video is some clueless wonder westerner so amazed as she bought the hype.
For those who love the fruit, I can't be the only one who's salivating while watching this video...
Ironic you won’t find mangosteen easily available in markets of Delhi and North!
Exactly they would rather sell fruit for huge profit to foreign countries than to sell their own countrymen. Such a shame as a Indian, I have never tasted or seen it before.
@@manorsolomon951 yup! Now it's going to be more expensive for Locals. people r so greedy
@@manorsolomon951 this is exactly the same with high quality durian in Thailand, they're gone abroad for profit. Only 2nd or 3rd tier(low quality) durian stays in the country.
@@GalihStone yes I lived in China and can relate to that! Most Thai Durian can be seen in local supermarkets in China at a huge markup!
The best fruit ever. My late uncle has a huge mangosteen tree, and I remember eating the fruit all the time when I was little. Miss him.
Viral Tiktok fruit. Bruh, the host doesn't know.
Guys just go to Bali, where the fruit is cheap and it's a great place to visit
Bruhh.. I got 2 mangosteen trees at my backyard.. We just give them away, just pick it your self🤣
Heaven❤
So happy to see my neighbour Manu’s farm being shown in a global viral video ❤
Come to Thailand and you can have 20 kg for that 22$ 😊.
Don't want to be rude, but like to know the correct answer! Isn't the 1kg = 2.205 pounds???
Lol I thought I was the only one who got offended by "The Viral TikTok Fruit".
Mangosteen is originally from and mainly grown in Southeast Asia. Thailand 🇹🇭 produces the most and has the best fruit ever.
In Kerala, we grew this in our backyard. Expensive fruit though and very seasonal.
And don't forget that a Mangosteen tree takes between 10 and 14 years to produce the fruits. Realize that before you start growing those trees 😅.
can't you just graft the seedlings with a flowering branch from a mature tree to shorten the waiting time?
@@Hazynote253well, you need a mature tree first right?
Mangosteen, What an original name
Everytime I go to Thailand, I buy several kilos and eat it everyday. When I try to buy it in the US it's not as good and really expensive.
Oh jeez "Viral TikTok fruit"? Is that where we are now? I've always loved Mangosteens. Get them every time I see them at H Mart.
This fruit grows in Hawaii and Florida. You can get it locally in the US.
Are you confusing TH-cam conformity and parroting with 'demand'? Shows how pathetically dependent pricing is on fads, bad consumerism and greed.
1:45 even uncle is not buying that clickbait title 🤣
I just eat mangosteen other day here in my country Philippines and they're cheap here. 😂 And it's very sweet and I can only eat it one seedling at a time.
As an Indonesian, this fruit was so cheap here and powerful as hell, feels like cheating .
Here in the philippines in mindanao area is 25 peso per kilo 😂 some times you can take it for free. We have tons of these fruit to be honest!!
If you get them firsthand at farmers here in Indonesia, you can get them as cheap as 0.3 USD per kilogram, sometimes even lower. The price skyrockets when being exported because they rot very quickly once ripe.
do they fruit all year round like durian? if so, i'm very envious!
@@oxoelfoxo They don't. But since Indonesia is so large, different regions/islands have different fruiting seasons. So for the whole country, the fruiting season is longer. Same with Durian, they are seasonal fruits. But, there are certain varieties that fruits all year.
This fruit went viral on TikTok, but we Southeast Asians have been eating it for generations!
As Sri Lankans living in Australia, mangosteen has been one of my family’s favourite fruits, unfortunately the prices here are very high so whenever we travel to South or South East Asia, we make sure to get plenty.
Why don't they plant it in Northern Territority in Australia?

“The viral tiktok fruit” bro I been eating it since 6 and it’s been almost 14 years😭
I thinks this is Not " Viral TikTok Fruit"
mangosteen is the best fruit i have ever tasted.
I don't think its a good idea for a farmer to go all in on one crop if that crop has suddenly peaked due to a fashion trend, it will soon die down and the plants take a few years to grow, seems pretty risky to me.
Mangosteen + sugar = direct to Heaven
It’s the most delicious fruit on earth.. I’ve been to all the tropical countries and tried it all.. it’s the best
In my region in Indonesia you can get around 3kg-5kg of it with USD $1 when it is in it's season..
Most of the rural homes in Malaysia have at least 1 tropical fruit tree in their yard. Be it mango, rambutan or mangosteen.
"The Viral Tiktok Fruit"? Oh come on dude 😂😂😂😂
"Viral tiktok fruit" is there any downgrade worse than that
The US claims that it’s a relatively “new” fruit because it couldnt be imported 🤣🤣🤣🤣

VIRAL TIKTOK FRUIT☠️, the terryfing power of Social Media😂
In Indonesia..1kg costs about $2.5 only.
Indonesia : *OOH! That's a BIG ONE!* [2.2$/kg]
Awesome !! That Merlin guy was WAY ahead of the curve. Good for him !
the guy in this video is my friend. total kickass farmer. we use to walk through the farms and eat mangosteen.
It is not viral tiktok fruit and it is not expansive, in Indonesia 1 kg just about usd1..but, yes it is delicious.. From indonesia
lol, In my home in Kerala, India, we got 4 mangosteen trees. 😂 I didn't knew it was this exotic.
In malaysia easily can get that around rm12 ( around 3 dollars) per kilo. Never imagine it can goes as high as 6dollar per pieces! That's just crazy.
As an Indian, How the hell I don't know 😕 about this ?

In Terengganu, Malaysia, we call this 'Woh Smete'
Never knew what this fruit was until today. Thanks calm voice lady. Will try and find some..
It's cheap in Indonesian traditional market, you can get 1KG Mangosteen for 1$-2$
Mangosteen is a wonder fruit, can even prevent cancer. Its not expensive here in southeast asia especially if its in season. In summer it cost about less than US$1 per kilo here in mania, phis. It is cheaper in the provinces of course. But there is really nothing much to eat in a mangosteen fruit.
Mangosteen is a common fruit found in North Macedonia. Our local mangosteen jam is famous too.
In philippines it sells for .50 cents usd (25 pesos) per kilo
I love mangosteen! Yum!
in my hometown in indonesia is only 1$/kg
I literally have a Mangosteen tree in front of my house, there's also a similar fruit called Kecapi with yellow exterior but has the same exact inner flesh and taste
