Dude i didn't need this to watch today of all the time. It's my birthday today and no one around me even knows. Even my family is living far. This hits hard.
I can relate... I'll make myself believe that I'm not hoping for a surprise birthday party every year but I know deep down I do. This year I have turn in the age where it's mostly the age for surprise party in my country... but I did not.
Im crying rn because this made me realize that I always help to plan a surprise birthday party for my friends but never got a surprise birthday party .It kinda sting that im not a well liked person. Even though keep telling myself all these years to be kind to others, help without expecting in return. I guess im still far from being a good guy.
i feel you :( I always brought food to share and made cards which took me like 3 hours for my friends but when it was my birthday, my friends overslept, came late and didn't bring food. I brought heaps of food thankfully and everyone (except me) had a great time. My heart was so empty the whole day, it hurt physically, I was so excited to see what they would do for me and the cards etc but I got almost nothing. I held back tears the whole day. Anyway sorry I went on a tangent. I get what you mean about being kind without expecting things, but it really doesn't make you a bad person. I think its natural to hope for something, especially when you've been a good friend and made everyone else feel better. dont believe that, of course i dont know you personally but you seem like a good person and everyone has flaws.... it might just be that we like to make more effort ..and even though we try not to expect anything in return for it we still want to feel special on our birthdays..so we hope..but then they dont reciprocate our effort..
I don't like birthday parties in general because I don't want to be reminded that I am one year older. I want to maintain the delusional that I am never going to get old... ... ...
