  • In the beginning, shamisen can seem pretty daunting to learn. Not only do you have to learn how to wield an ice scraper-like mass as a plectrum, but navigating the fretless neck can easily leave one feeling lost when trying to play a melody. While the bachi does take some time to get used to, there is a way to make the fretless aspect much more bearable for newcomers, and that's by using the position mark strip called the Fujaku!
Find out all about it and how to put one on!

Thank you! This is so much more than just an explanation of Fujaku, covering style (genre) vs physical spec of the instrument etc.
I wonder if it's by intention that this video is not included in the DaFAQ playlist?

Glad it was helpful! Initially it was just going to be a short video of the basic how-to-use steps, but then once I start writing it, I ended up going down the rabbit hole a bit. 😛
Oh snap, thank you for letting me know!! I forgot to add it to the playlist! 🤣

Thank you for this. Got a Shamisen from like an antique shop. I play guitar so I am familiar with pitches, but it came with a worn out paper Fujaku and I feel like the markers are off.
I might need to measure the neck/scale length. I am not sure if there's a better way to reach a good tuning since the increments are crazy on the itomakis.

Glad you got a shamisen! Definitely your guitar skills will make figuring out the wide scale length a bit easier. If you have an antique shamisen, it's possible the fujaku is of the older classical variety. For classical styles, '0' doesn't refer to the open, but rather refers to the first ('1') position. '1' would be position '2' on the new plastic fujaku, and so on. Being used to the new fujaku, that always throws me off, and might be the case for yours?
Hmm, tuning to C-G-C (root-fifth-octave) should be doable. Is the tuning not holding?

I can't find a Fujaku strip on the Bachido store. Where do you recommend getting one❓Or can I find measurements to mark the instrument myself

Ah, the Fujaku is on this page (bachido.com/store/misc). I have to warn you though, shipping costs are very expensive these days (minimum shipping cost is $42) as Japan Post haven't returned their prices to pre-2020 levels. Thus, the shipping might be too much for the Fujaku alone. I usually make a shopping list (several strings, a koma, etc) when buying from Japan to justify the shipping. 😅

Great information! But I was wondering, on the shamibuddy page it says that the beginner shamisen will have a bundle with the same price as the shamibuddy, when will that be happening? (Sorry for being impatient!)

Good question! I hoped to pair that release with the full website redesign that's coming up, but it's taking a lot longer than previously anticipated. 😅 I'm thinking the release might be around June or July? (Hopefully earlier though) I do have one last ShamiBuddy set if you'd be interested in that. :)

Is it safe to use clear tape on the neck so that way I can draw the numbers on?

Sure! Scotch tape should be just fine. :)
