This was a lovely, though sad, history lesson. Tim you are leaving a valuable record of the vaccume period between 'then, now and who knows what'. Brilliant video.❤
I wish I had the video before in the 80s Leon. The hole area was like this with massive indoor and outdoor markets. www.sheffieldhistory.co.uk/forums/topic/247-haymarket/page/2/
You used to be able to go under the Castle Market to see the remains of the old castle Tim, the Council opened it up once a year. I never saw it, but my mother visited at least a couple of times. There was a row of small shops, and a cafe, on the outside of the Sheaf Market, near where you walked Tim. The Rag & Tag was ace. There were still a few barrows on Dixon Lane, at least until the mid 90's, and probably later, plus the fellers selling cigarette lighters, and what have you, up at the top. Not hard to see how you'd get disorientated! 😱The market behind those boards was the Setts Market. The Market Tavern had a Berni Inn upstairs at one time. I think the pub was called The Old No1 at that time. The pub opposite Lady's Bridge, on Waingate, was most famously The Bull & Mouth, but it was also called The Boulogne, The Tap & Spile, and clearly something else too! Sorry Tim, I've only just realised your video is from a year ago, came up in my feed, and I thought it was new! 😁Great work anyway, it was absolutely packed round there at one time, with every cafe and pub full of people too. Your idea about moving the market to Castle House is a fantastic one, but no doubt there'd have been less money going in back pockets then. The new market is just a mall, not a market :( Davy's Cafe was so popular it had an upstairs, and a downstairs. Under that scaffolding was a really old building I've always meant to research. I guess that will have been messed up now too 😡When I was a nipper, we would always go in Woolworth's cafe, after shopping in the market, on a Friday. I'm sure a few folks remember The Penthouse/Rebels (I wouldn't be surprised if it is still the same inside, as when it shut)! 😁 At the bottom of King's Street, where Subway is, there was a large, old-fashioned butcher's shop. Much earlier, the town lock-up, run by Buggy Eyre, was on that street too. There used to be market stalls on that street, a few years ago, (it looks like a couple of them are still there in fact!). Next to Dunnes, at the bottom of King Street, was 'Tramps', in the 70's, a cheap jeans shop, had a few shirts, and that, from there! 😁Another great video Tim, even if it's an owd 'un! 😉👍
As usual Jack you add meat to the bones. I am about to do another video on this and compare with the 1930s and show people where the Corn exchange was.
Nice video. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and memories of this area. I agree with everything what you said. Let’s see what they do to the area, it’s got a long way to go yet before it is up and running again that is for sure! The Government recently have given some money to the council for this area, so they should be starting again soon with the opening up of the Sheaf river.
@@Zaptabby It would create a lot of money and fame for Sheffield. There has always been something missing. Once the largest castle in the North of England.
@@timawells Yes, they should create this area as a main focus point, feature and respect the historic significance of the city - have the river sheaf as a main feature (because of the origin of the name of Sheffield), have the castle as a main historic education hub with re-enactments of Mary Queen of Scots, and have Lady’s Bridge as the main entrance to the city as it was in the past, and have Waingate integrated into this in some way, and get rid of the ugly Police Station or change it to some other function. A police station does not fit in to this concept!
Well I was born and bred in Sheffield Tim but can hardly recognise the place anymore with all those new buildings. It's terrible what they've done to it. They used to have a slogan to promote the city in the old days, Sheffield city on the move" Well it's certainly moved but where it's gone I don't know.😄
They had vision back then even if it was a bit futuristic Myra. The leader of the council has been told by me. timawells.wordpress.com/2022/08/15/my-letter-to-the-leader-of-sheffield-city-council-terry-fox/
Thanks for this sentimental journey , although sad what SCC have done not been down there for years , awful buildings ! Great video xxx
Cheers Linda. I think you brought the rag and tag market to my attention.

I would like to see them build back the original castle in its entirety.
@@timawells That would be fantastic, imagine that for tourism. The grey money men will not do this though, no vision!
