I am an 80 year old man and I tear up at this. Vin stayed with me many years ago when I booked him for a folk club I was running in Wales. A genuine person and a pleasure to know.
I spent a month with him in 1976-77, traveling from one New England college campus and folk venues to another, when he was on tour with his band. He was the funniest, and one of the most generous people I have ever met. He gave so much of his beautiful, kind spirit to everyone he met. I will never forget you and your music, Vin. Thank you for one of the best months of my life. RIP 🥰
We miss you still, Vin. Thank you for your time on this earth and the spirit you shared with us…not to mention your inimitable jokes and making us laugh.
Vin. Total genius. I have lots of memories of Vin's gigs over the years. I coincidentally met him on one occasion, maybe ten years ago in Loftus, Christmas Eve coming out of an off-licence; he was carrying a huge armful of booze and I was about to follow his example. I said " You're Vin Garbutt!". We had a brief chat and he invited me to his Christmas party at the pub down the road which was happening a few days later, he said buy a ticket and come along! So I did. 170 mile round trip, but worth every penny! Vin Garbutt, I miss you so much. Rest in peace. And as with all my comments online, I wish everyone Love and Peace.
Well I think we all knew Vin and miss him so much. He was so talented and such a wonderful person. I first met him at a folk club in Nantwich in 1986. One of the best people ever .
What a beautiful song and I am blown away to hear it again. The last time was at this gig ,i was in the audience and it was the very last song of a 3 day festival. An incredible voice, people were crying it was so moving! I caught him again a few years back by chance in a small cafe in Sheffield,Tasmania with about15 people in the audience,we had front row seats and he played the song again for me. RIP Vin .
Saw Vin at Marymass folk festival.Great performer and a real gentleman who is up for a chat after the show.So genuine.Glad of the memory and glad to have lots of his cd 's to play
Thank you so very very much Chris Raine for this wonderful tribute to my most beautiful big brother who "made the world a better place". You've helped me vent some of my overwhelming grief today........"All the very best"........
Dear Ellen, thank you for your comment and I'm sorry for your loss, I'm sure the world shares your grief. I never meet Vin personally, but his performance at the Tasmanian Folk Festival was the highlight of the weekend for me and many others. His song, We may or might never all meet here again, was the last song on the last day of the festival and there was not a dry eye in the house as he finished and the cheers and clapping was deafening, a memory that I have treasured ever since. It's a pity that that cheering can't be heard in the clip I made, my fault - it was the best part. Chin up darling, he's in a good place now. ps - Is he really your brother ?
Hello Chris, thank you for your fine words of comfort and yes he really is my big brother. I'm the youngest of four (Michael, Mary, Vin and meself). He was such a very very special person who made a huge impact upon me, especially as I was growing up. He introduced me to the big wide world as a teenager, taking me with him on gigs around the UK. We were very close. Are the photographs you use on the video available anywhere for me to download (I'm not on FB)? They're fabulous shots, that really capture his persona. I stumbled upon your outstanding tribute whilst searching for a live performance video of him singing "fell off the back of a boat" for one of my nephews but couldn't find one. ps you kinda did meet him personally-he was no different on stage than off! Thanks again.
I'm chuffed that a relative of Vin's would write to me ! All the pictures, except for the TFF poster, were grabbed from Bing Images - you would find the same on Google pictures. ( type in Vin Garbutt, haha ) I cannot make claim to either music (of course ) or pictures. I merely married the two. Running off on a tangent here, possibly useful, two of the Festival organizers at the time were John and Caroline Bushby, who now live in Newcastle upon Tyne. They are on FB at @johnandcarolinebushby. Or at shearwatermusic@hotmail.co.uk. This could be a good contact, perhaps. It's possible that I did meet Vin without knowing it - I used to drive the 'courtesy bus' from Launceston airport to Longford picking up visitors and performers coming to the festival, it was a great job to be the first to welcome the folk and make them feel comfortable and showing them where to go when they got there. ...anyway, enough raving. You should be VERY proud of your big brother, kind regards, Chris.
Hello Chris, thanks very much for info and contacts. I'm dead chuffed that you took the time to produce and post such a beautiful, sensitive and most apt tribute for Vin! We're all VERY proud of him! Thanks again. Take care and mind the roads! Ellen.
No, thank you Ellen ! It's an honour for me to have had such recognition for my work. To have received special thanks and acknowledgement from you makes it more than worthwhile. I have really appreciated your kind words. Very pleased to have chatted, you've made my day, or night as it is here in Tasmania.
I only saw Vin once at a live gig and was immediately hooked. A genuine folk troubadour who sang with true passion. Sadly, I won't have the chance to meet you again Vin but I will continue to listen and enjoy your music.
so sad to lose a great singer like Vin...saw him perform many times and was a regular visitor to the old Brewery Folk Club in Kendal....will be sadly missed...his music his humour his voice his brilliant songs...RIP Vin...we will never forget you.....
Never heard that one before. Thanks for posting. I remember Vin's comment in an interview many years ago: "With any luck I'll still be doing this when I'm 70." Such a shame he didn't quite make it.
Chris, this is such a poignant tribute to Vin. His singing, as always, is so heartfelt and passionate. And the words to the song are so achingly true...thanks.
So sad but equally wonderful to hear Vin again. What a great touch to add Pete Betts song as well. Did you know they are buried a few feet from each other in ESTON Cemetery?
Many years back I saw Vin at Sutherland Shire Folk Club (Sydney, Australia). I really liked this song & somehow managed to get hold of the words. More recently I began playing at folk venues & wanted to add this to the repertoire. I tried searching TH-cam, but only came up with versions that either made it sound like a dirge or a hip hop number. So I figured out what I thought the chords might be from that ancient memory & played the tune a couple of times, referring to Vin. Last night I did it as a farewell tribute to Vin at our Red Hill Folk Club here in Brisbane, & a friend asked me for the lyrics & music. So I thought I'd provide my version & refer him back to TH-cam for the others. Then I found this. Turned out my memory & chords were thankfully pretty accurate. Thank you, Chris, thank you! I melted & got all misty. It will get a regular outing whenever a farewell song is appropriate. I can now refer people to the splendid Vin version. Vale Vin, & thanks again Chris !
bradjonesxxx You're most welcome ! I'm glad it means as much to you as it does me. I was there when this was recorded in the Longford Town Hall. Vin was the last performer singing the last song on the last day of the festival....when finished there was not a dry eye in the house. Listening to it has almost always made me teary since 1979. Highlights of the festival were released on cassette tape and some 10 years ago I copied that cassette onto PC. I'm a bit cross with myself because I made this clip in a hurry and cut off the best bit - all the clapping and cheering and floor stomping at the end.

Thanks so much for posting, I was at this concert and it was a real moment in life. His singing, story-telling and whistle playing was so full of spirit and light. Do you have any more tracks from this concert? I remember a hilarious story about a butcher called Charlie Go, when introducing 'But You Go' and the whole performance was incredible.
Sorry Lisa, I have no other recordings. You were at Longford in '79 ? This recording was one track on the Tasmanian Folk Festival '79' cassette tape, recorded and produced by the TFF.

1979 was when blessed to be in Vin's presence at a beautiful magical gig in Sydney, or close to 79

Vin you were a legion. Where can I purchase this, but not on vinyl.

Lovely. I'm not sure he'd approve of the Nigel Farage ad running beforehand.
