A cheap set of gauge blocks is about $125, that are way more precise than that height gauge, and you can use them blocks for setting that cheapo height gauge to better precision than it's meant for, and, you still have a set of gauge blocks for other uses in the shop... Batteries are like from 10 cents to 25 cents each at the Dollar store, you need to use LOTS of them to equate to a $700 Mitutoyo height gauge...............!!!!!
I'm a cabinet maker. You never need accuracy better than 1/32" which you can get from a combination square. Can't imagine what would be the purpose of this in woodworking. Thanks for the video.

Retrofit the battery with an on/off contact switch in the cap. Pretty easy to do, tape the battery and solder one of those miniature SMD hold buttons. fleaBay has them.

A co-worker brought in a set of i-gauging calipers and i had to qualify them for use on the shop floor. Of all the cheapos I've had the misfortune to have to work with the i-gauging are the best. I found them more precise than those blue fowlers.

You can get a purpose built Wixey WR503 drill press depth gauge kit for less than $40. Accuracy and repeatability is better than anything I'll ever need to do with my press.

iGaging has always had a large range of tempting items. Pricing makes it worth a look. I'll be sticking to setup blocks for my nefarious wood fairy work.
I have this thing. Great cheap substitute to a proper height gauge. Original battery lasted years. To get repeatability and precision push the tip, otherwise you fight the flexibility of the construction and it will always be off a little. For a while I verified measurements with other tools or blocks and to my surprise it never was off after I learned to move the tip, not the head. It doesn't have a screw for precise movements, bumping the end with a pen works to dial in last 0.01mm for scribing lines. Wish the tip was carbide, but for marking aluminum it is ok. I'm planning to mount better tip and maybe steel base. From the factory, mine was a little off square with the base. Took me a minute to fix that and it never moved, even after a few drops. Unfortunately base is aluminum, so after one drop I had to file a corner. Compared to cheap calipers iGaging calipers are fantastic. Fast update, clean and smooth, great battery life for a fraction of the machinist grade tool cost. Not as far from Mitutoyo as the price would suggest.
The juice sipping calip hair is why I gave up on digital here in my garage. Never failed to have a dead battery. Thought I was the only poor sucker having to purchase a new button battery every 3 months just to measure one stinking OD! I subsequently found a battery-free ANALOG dial caliper that has dual readings and, while chinsey, does the job better without any frustration. Thanks for sharing AvE Sir!
11:18 you are acutally right with the quadrature encoder, it is something in beetween that and a vernier, probing which of the four lines is closest to a line in the strip at the moment.

Another great BOLTR. One clarification, quadrature encoders use two signal lines not four. The two signals generate four different combinations and you detect direction from how the combinations change. For every tooth/capacitve leg you get four different combinations.

You should try out their calipers. I watched someone on TH-cam do a relatively in depth comparison using gauge blocks and various other calipers; it turned out to do pretty well. I got myself one of their calipers (the step down from absolute origin, I didn't see it as necessary) and I feel like they feel pretty good. Good repeatablility and smooth motion (so they are probably rather smoo free). Also I don't think they drain the battery at all when not in use because I've had it for over a year without a battery change.
iGaging is popular among home shops guys because the retrofit of the read head to be used as dro scales for lathes and mills. BTW iGaging uses a 21bit encoder system and NOT quadrature.
I bought a 6" and 12" Mitutoyo calipers in the late 80's. I still use them daily(mostly the 6") and are still in calibration. I also have the 0-4" digital mic set and digital depth mic set. I would not trade my Mitutoyo stuff for anything else :-) Plus a cabinet full of regular Mitutoyo micrometers gauges etc

I picked up one of these at a woodcraft bargin table for $25. Unlike the cheap calipers that use the small batteries, the 2032's seem to last a long time. I've only replaced the battery a couple of times in a couple of years. It's fine for woodworking, and I've used it to setup 3d printer beds. I have my Mitutoyos for metalworking.
i only use cheapo tools, except from the quality ones i can score and restore from the scrapyard and i must say, most of them are worth their money. especially the measuring devices. when i use my cheapo chinese mini lathe, the parts come out allright. sure, youre not going to build a full fledged rocket engine but for the ocasional pen, lighter or screw - hence the stuff you are realisticly going to use a lathe for, they are golden. i could see me using a thing like that on the tablesaw too, but i already frankensteined a 20$ caliper and an aluminium block into a makeshift hight gauge for that purpose wich works just fine. for woodworking everything under 0.5mm deviation is totally fine, i mean realisticly most of the time even +-1mm would still be okay. i also could see me using this for the occasional knife making, but then again, its 60 dollars and some roundstock with a diagonal hole in it basically does the same for me.
This thing is for woodworking. You can’t machine wood to within a couple of thousandths, due to the nature of wood. So it’s good enough for its intended purpose. Maybe better (i.e. more expensive) than you need for its intended purpose. You can set table saw blade height pretty well with a ruler and your eyeballs.
Wondering if maybe the angulation on the end is intentional to allow it to come to a point? Get into corners to measure? Curious if there are machining marks on that face of the part to suggest that a process was added to grind that face at an angle as opposed to square.
I have a set of iGagine calipers, they are actually really nice. I am a CNC machinist. They are just my home pair, but they work fantastic. The iGaging brand from what I have seen is not bad for the price.
If you consider the pitch of the lines on the capacitive quadrature sensor vs about .001" resolution you will realize that something more than just counting pulses is going on. Yes, one can use the quadrature pulses to note which direction the gage is moving, but within the quadrature counts the capacitive sensor can be ratiometricly read to determine how far from the nearest transition the gage is. This allows a much higher resolution than if one were only counting the quadrature counts.
Man, I remember a few years back I bought a husky caliper and gave it to my dad for father's day. Later he re-gifted it to me and I broke the p.d... I just wanted to take a look at it and tightened a housing screw back up too tight; broke right threw the damn board. Never even got to use it! Lesson learned, that's for sure
It’s a left hand one! To move the height gauge into position, you would use your right hand. You cannot view the scale/readout while using your right hand. Are all Canadians left handed?
Interesting point on the cheap tools pulling power when they are turned "off". I have a cheapo harbor freight polymer body caliper that's sat in my tool box for 3 years just for eyeballing twist drills as "close enough" and it still has the factory battery in it. I get the slightly less sh*tty ones, batteries corroded out days later.
Liquid crystal display display? That's essentially what you're saying when you say "LCD display". Add that to the Automated Teller Machine machine, Vehicle Identification Number number, Personal Identification Number number. Abbreviations be tricky unless you sound them out. Oddly enough (or not so oddly if following the foregoing advice), LED display IS correct, as it's from Light Emitting Diode.
Sometimes you get lucky, and a conscientious assembler put it together just before the managers dragged out his/ her will to live. You end up with a high quality cheap product... when that happens you basically won the lottery.

I've a couple of digital protractors (used to call them goniometers, not to be confused with a gonorrhea meter) from the same I be gag-ing company. They're plenty accurate, and get the job done the 3x a year you need them. But, guaranteed that when you grab one, the friggin' battery is dead. You spend more on CR2032s than the damn gauge cost. Being not completely dumb, after a year or two, I figured out to just leave the battery out except for when you're using the gauge.
That port isn't USB, just uses a USB connector. It is a serial protocol, though, and easy to hack with a 'duino though you'll need to be using 3.3v logic voltages.
I Gaging is not too terrible. They are the bear minimum I use. I have a set of old Mitutoyos with the tungsten carbide jaws. I only use these for woodworking and string gauge & string action checking. The company who sells the hyper-overpriced tools for building or repairing guitars sells reject straight edges from I-Gaging. They charge 50%-100% more for a straight edge that is half as straight. I know the repeatability of I Gaging is not overly good, compared to Mitutoyo.

Unfortunately my ability to read vernier calipers ended when my arms grew too short to hold them far enough away to see the numbers - lol!
I picked up one of these at a woodcraft bargin table for $25. Unlike the cheap calipers that use the small batteries, the 2032's seem to last a long time. I've only replaced the battery a couple of times in a couple of years. It's fine for woodworking, and I've used it to setup 3d printer beds. I have my Mitutoyos for metalworking.
i only use cheapo tools, except from the quality ones i can score and restore from the scrapyard and i must say, most of them are worth their money. especially the measuring devices. when i use my cheapo chinese mini lathe, the parts come out allright. sure, youre not going to build a full fledged rocket engine but for the ocasional pen, lighter or screw - hence the stuff you are realisticly going to use a lathe for, they are golden. i could see me using a thing like that on the tablesaw too, but i already frankensteined a 20$ caliper and an aluminium block into a makeshift hight gauge for that purpose wich works just fine. for woodworking everything under 0.5mm deviation is totally fine, i mean realisticly most of the time even +-1mm would still be okay.
i also could see me using this for the occasional knife making, but then again, its 60 dollars and some roundstock with a diagonal hole in it basically does the same for me.

This thing is for woodworking. You can’t machine wood to within a couple of thousandths, due to the nature of wood. So it’s good enough for its intended purpose. Maybe better (i.e. more expensive) than you need for its intended purpose. You can set table saw blade height pretty well with a ruler and your eyeballs.

Wondering if maybe the angulation on the end is intentional to allow it to come to a point? Get into corners to measure? Curious if there are machining marks on that face of the part to suggest that a process was added to grind that face at an angle as opposed to square.

we just use a flat steel ruler for the blade height. sometimes we even get crazy and use it to measure from the fence to the blade too.
I have a set of iGagine calipers, they are actually really nice. I am a CNC machinist. They are just my home pair, but they work fantastic. The iGaging brand from what I have seen is not bad for the price.
If you consider the pitch of the lines on the capacitive quadrature sensor vs about .001" resolution you will realize that something more than just counting pulses is going on. Yes, one can use the quadrature pulses to note which direction the gage is moving, but within the quadrature counts the capacitive sensor can be ratiometricly read to determine how far from the nearest transition the gage is. This allows a much higher resolution than if one were only counting the quadrature counts.

It’s a left hand one! To move the height gauge into position, you would use your right hand. You cannot view the scale/readout while using your right hand. Are all Canadians left handed?

Interesting point on the cheap tools pulling power when they are turned "off". I have a cheapo harbor freight polymer body caliper that's sat in my tool box for 3 years just for eyeballing twist drills as "close enough" and it still has the factory battery in it. I get the slightly less sh*tty ones, batteries corroded out days later.
That which was hard to learn, will be even harder to forget.
My I-Gagging digital calipers are surprisingly well made and accurate, considering the cost.

Sometimes you get lucky, and a conscientious assembler put it together just before the managers dragged out his/ her will to live. You end up with a high quality cheap product... when that happens you basically won the lottery.

I've a couple of digital protractors (used to call them goniometers, not to be confused with a gonorrhea meter) from the same I be gag-ing company. They're plenty accurate, and get the job done the 3x a year you need them. But, guaranteed that when you grab one, the friggin' battery is dead. You spend more on CR2032s than the damn gauge cost. Being not completely dumb, after a year or two, I figured out to just leave the battery out except for when you're using the gauge.
I bought a chinese Mastercraft caliper from Canadian Tire for $14 and it's really good. I was pleasantly surprised. And yes, it has a data port :D
best way to clean those contacts at the PCB for the LCD is a rubber pencil eraser.
That port isn't USB, just uses a USB connector. It is a serial protocol, though, and easy to hack with a 'duino though you'll need to be using 3.3v logic voltages.

I Gaging is not too terrible. They are the bear minimum I use. I have a set of old Mitutoyos with the tungsten carbide jaws. I only use these for woodworking and string gauge & string action checking. The company who sells the hyper-overpriced tools for building or repairing guitars sells reject straight edges from I-Gaging. They charge 50%-100% more for a straight edge that is half as straight. I know the repeatability of I Gaging is not overly good, compared to Mitutoyo.
