Allow me to clarify something.....a lot of people has suggested that I should have used liquid dish detergent and that I should have cleaned up the lubricant that I placed on the road. FIRST....I carry liquid dish detergent and that is my "go-to" for situations like this, unfortunately I ran out and hadn't replenished my stock so I used what I had available. There is more liquid dish detergent on the truck now. As for cleaning up the lubricant that was on the pavement.....I DID CLEAN IT UP, I just didn't include it on the video. I am a motorcycle rider and a professional tow/recovery operator. I would never leave such a mess on the roadway. I didn't film the clean up or us following the driver to make certain he made it safely into his destination, because I didn't think the viewers would find it interesting. Please, before commenting, know that I operate a clean, family-friendly channel and I expect all comments to be respectful. I am always open to constructive criticism if it is given respectfully and with the intention of educating rather than belittling. I am not perfect.....nobody is. If you notice, I never criticize a driver or their predicament. I am there to HELP, not to make their day worse by making them feel bad. Heaven knows I've made my share of mistakes and I would appreciate it if my viewers......most of you already do......would be respectful of these people and their situations. Comments with foul language or comments that are hateful, demeaning, disrespectful, or downright rude will not be allowed. Please help me keep this community family-friendly and respectful to all people.

Ron Pratt, I too run a family friendly channel. I want content that a person can sit their child in front of and not have to worry about what they will see or hear. Your professionalism is fantastic. A few things I have learned in life...There will always be those who jump to conclusions, there will always be naysayers, and unfortunately there will always negativity. You are a great individual with qualities that are very rare these days. Your content is fantastic and intriguing. I say keep up the good work! Don't let a few ruin your day! If you ever make it to Northwest Missouri, let me know. I know where all the good restaurants are located. 😉

Thanks for clarifying. I too am a motorcycle rider and wouldn't like to come across unexpected oil in a curve... What would you think of sand and/or gravel? The effect is small ball bearings... I've used sand and stiff cardboard to move/slide stuff in a garage (smooth concrete). I know (from a painful lay down on my bike in my youth) that gravel turns into ball bearing when you take a turn too fast on a bike...

The more I see Talon in action the more impressed I am with his knowledge of the job. For such a young man he is well versed in the art of the tow biz, that speaks well of your teaching ability Ron. I hope Talon realizes how lucky he is to being taught by someone with decades of experience behind him and really wants him to be successful. You are giving him a real head start in life, but the best part is watching him absorb the knowledge that normally takes years to learn. Most young men his age think they know it everything already, but Talon is wise enough to watch, listen and learn.....your daughter picked a good one. I am hoping my two daughters pick out hard working and good young men like your daughter did.
    I like that young man...he isn't a know it all.. 😁

Ron - when customer mentioned working through the night and you mentioned working through rain & snow, I was just waiting for you to say that there aren’t many customers left like you that will choose fine, daytime weather to get themselves in trouble and call me out...! Another fine video Ron featuring you, Tator and Talon; Midwest Truck don’t get any better than that...

    • @RonPratt

Ron - really?! That’s very interesting... So, as your original remark in the video suggested, your vehicle recovery life is somehow not complete unless you’re battling with weather/hours as well as the challenges of the recovery itself...?! Thanks for your first response and may God bless you and all that surround you whatever the hour and weather.

One tiny improvement Ron would be to keep the audio of the two cams in sync, and when you're talking to Talon switch to his cam's audio (only audio) so that we can hear his answer; it can be hard to hear his reply some times, especially when there is background noise. Great videos BTW, keep on with the great work you do!

Hey Ron, just watched Atlas Slide. I wanted to let you know that I have used Dawn dish soap as a Friction reducer with Much success, & found that it's also Much Easier to Clean up than actual lubricants. Because as you know, You don't want to leave a Slippery Hazerdous mess for Anyone else. From the bed of the Rollback, to Pavement; It can just be rinsed away. Was Hooking up cars myself with Daddy as my driver/Mentor @ twelve years old. Not to mention cutting up cars for parts with the Oxy/Acetelyne Torches in the Lot with the Yard Dog. Thank You for All that You Do, You're Videos are Uplifting in more ways than one. Yours Truly, Dutch. 😉

Hi Ron, Like to offer a a tip for this type of scenario (I learned in the army) that will avoid using oil on the highway. Carry a couple of small aluminium plates and some washing up liquid/water solution. Jack up the axel just enough to slip the plate under the tyres smear the aluminium plate with the washing up solution, remove jack allowing the tyre to settle on the plate and this will make the job so much easier. Love your videos very informative and true life adventures. God Bless you and yours. Opps I didn't read any comments Ron. I am just offering feedback from what I see on the video.

I wish you would have been in Iceland two months ago when we got stuck in the snow with the car. Thanks to a person with "great" knowledge of pulling car, we smashed the bumper of the car and then our wallet when returning the car... Two lessons learnt... First, never trust a non-professional operator even thought they might have the best intention to help. Second lesson, never rent a car in Iceland without a full insurance!!
Great videos as usual!! So much to learn!!! Congrats

Works really well and as it turns out we were 40 years ahead -- environmentally safe.

Good videos. I've done hundreds of heavy recovery pulls (ex CDN Army RCEME technician) and the one thing that I saw that made the hair stand up on my neck was your swamper (and the customer) stepping over a live line. I know there wasn't any tension on the line when he crossed it, but that can be the habit that costs him dearly. It's not the fact that he did it once, it's the fact that he did it at all. His first instinct should have been walk to the truck from the right (or passenger) side. All it takes is a moment of inattention under the right (or wrong) circumstances and the cost can be your life. 100% safety and always 100% safety, everyone gets to go home. Other than that one incident your videos are great to watch, brings back memories of years gone by. Be safe, go home in one piece everytime my friend.

Love your video's and how you take the time to explain everything....... I'm trying to get into this line of work right now it has always fascinated me even when I was first getting my CDL this was my ultimate goal. It's just with me being 43 years old I hope I didn't wait too long most people have told me that I haven't and that as long as I'm willing to put in the long hours and the hard work and I got a good head on my shoulders I should be able to be hired on and be able to do the job the place looking to go to in Bristol PA is called robs I think he has about 8 twin screw Peterbilts and for tri axle Kenworth and one rotator and there just the heavies........ he also has medium duty light duty he has a body shop now a full detail shop a full report Center from just starting out with one tow truck he's really turned himself into a major player in Pennsylvania. What I think is cool is about every other week even though they hate it they won't say it but they do he makes his detail guys brand each heavy truck and go over it and power wash it and do the rims and the tanks and all the aluminum on it and I'll tell you what even his older trucks better let's say 8 years old look brand-new when the detail shop is done with them. Keep up the great work sir I enjoyed thoroughly watching and learning from your videos.

Nice video Ron, I like the double camera aspect, it works really well! Next time you are in a pinch for some good lubricant though, grab a bottle of engine coolant! I've been out on a lot of wrecks, and if you get some of that stuff on the soles of your boots, you will slide all the way into next week!! Throw some water on it, add a few "spoons" of kitty-litter and it's all dried up and gone!

Just a suggestion Ron, A bottle of tyre mounting lube that the tyre shops use on tyre beads to make the tyres slide onto the rims. Its like a thick detergent. There is also another product nicknamed "elephant snot" for mounting truck tyres. its like vasaline. Both are water soluble so they won't damage the road surface. They come from the supplier in quart, gallon or 5 gallon containers. See your local tyre shop.

Another good video and one of easy ones. I wanted to point out that I have noticed Talon getting better and asking the right questions and he also noticing there were no real good connecting points to pull from and also speaking and directing the truck driver. I know he operates the smaller rollbacks all the time picking car. But that Rotator pulling a 50000 pound loaded trailer is exponentially more dangerous. Even in the seaming easy side slide. Good job.

Good Job by you and Talon as always. Ron I use to buy a dry powder like graphite spray that I used in similar situations like you had here and it was great very slick and didn't have to use very much. One of those things a little went a long ways and it worked great. Have a great weekend. God Bless!!!

I like the added Talon dimension. And you're right about the pay attention in school part too. Made my job much easier and me much more effective in my job (Industrial maintenance plumber. Learned on the job and reading and research). The problem is trying to teach those who didn't pay attention how to plan and execute a task that to me seemed relatively simple.

HaHa. I think Tator Salad and Tator Tot are names that have already been spoken for, though. Most people have been calling me Rotator Ron and Talon has "unwillingly" taken on the nickname "Waddles" after his first solo video with the chest cam. Thanks and God bless.

Great job R & T, I feel the Atlas drivers pain when I ran LTL early 2002 company truck 53 footer residential delivery I nice cop seen me park on a wide street and start walking he was nice enough to pick me up and we both plotted my best route in an out of this extremely narrow residential neighborhood he even hung around for traffic control so I could back off a main road down a lane we both agreed the company should have sent that shipment on a smaller truck but hey that's what we signed up for right.

That graphite spray stuff is great for locks and such when they start to stick. Lubricates them up but it doesn't hold dirt like oils do.
Some of those air bearing lifter jobies like they use in the locomotive shops to locomotives around while they're assembling them would probably be a lifesaver for jobs like this. Of course a set with enough oomph probably ain't what you'd call cheap, especially when the rotator does a good enough job once you get some oil down on the road to break the friction.

Just catching your latest video Ron, in many ways it's good to get back to some form of normality, Sadly my Wife and I had to take my 87 year old Mother down to Mid England to lay to rest, not only her Younger Sisters Husband, but then within days, her other Younger Sister then passed away, of all things to die from in this day and age, Pneumonia, I'm telling you this Ron, in the hope that anyone else reading this, anyone who might have a bad cough now, or someone who might in the future suffer a bad cough, please, I beg you, get medical advice from a Doctor, bad coughs are a sign of something wrong, so don't ignore it, do something
It was good to see you tackling something, again different, and as always, I enjoyed watching, and I see my son has been abusing my name on TH-cam again, he lets his fingers run away with his mouth, and I'm left trying to fend off people he upsets, I think a change of name or password might now help, but thank you Ron, I hope you didn't mind me posting a warning on your channel

First off Ron didn’t don’t anything wrong. That gear oil is fresh. It’s not hazardous material unless it’s used gear oil. Just like motor oil isn’t hazardous unless it’s used motor oil.
2nd. These guys did everything like a bunch of professionals.
3rd. Want a neat trick? Little trucks have a 25 gallon aluminum water tank and large trucks have a 75 gallon tank pressurized by truck air system. Spray down the road with water. Works like a charm. Plus after a nasty recovery in the mud you can wash off your boots before getting in the truck. Been doing it for years. Works awesome!!!!

My dream job believe it or not, was to become a heavy duty tow truck driver. Weather, mud, weeds, insects, snakes and all. I drove charter buses and watched truckers and tow trucks. I can see the mastery required in many disciplines, such as reducing friction. Are you financially responsible for his trailer and load? I thought you would put a big strap on the back and lift it over. What would happen if you somehow pulled the entire tandem axle out when pulling on his wheels? This is huge stuff.

For those of you complaining that he left some oil on the ground, in terms of a safety stand point for people hitting that slick spot, yes that is a issue, in terms of damage to the environment, you wouldn't want to see the back ramp area at the airport where I work. There is so much jet fuel, diesel, and grease, that when ever it rains, it looks like a damn rainbow :). While it does suck, and I am not happy about, it is the nature of the beast, there is nothing you can do. What do you think happens to the roll overs that they respond, where the call rolled into a ditch. You know fluids came out of the car, and are now in the grass, and dirt, and you know it is not good, but unfortunately there is nothing you can about that :(. However anyone who as watched more than like 2 videos of rons, should know by now that he cleaned it up. Just because you didn't see, and just because he did not have dish soap at that moment, or you did not see it on his truck, does not mean he did not clean it up.

I love "side walk supervisors", a term that a friend of mine, who is also in the industry, coined years ago in reference to the State Police or some other officer telling us what piece of equipment to bring or how to do the job once we get there. We found out later that it was terminology that was used quite frequently to describe such behaviour. I view quite a few of these comments as 'sidewalk supervisors'. After viewing many of your video, I can't see you making some of the mistakes that you are accused of. GOD Bless.
